The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread

That's kind of surprising to hear.
Hardware unlock is not that easy. Even apart from the soldering, it's supposedly not easy to open and then put back the iPhones together because they pack everything tight to keep it as slim as possible.
The software unlock hasn't been released yet, has it? The two companies are talking about it but there are rumors that lawyers have contacted them to prevent them from selling their software.
There are eBay auctions with claims of unlocked phones too but I think there are different definitions of "unlocked." The earliest unlock was to let you use the iPod/movie player and Internet features but you couldn't use a cell phone service with it.
Then there are hacks to put ringtones and some small sample applications -- things like an NES emulator.
So maybe those Canadian shops did some soldering.

Yeah, it would be interesting to understand the true meaning of "unlocked". I currently have a razr V3 mobile phone, so if if the iphone is 'unlocked", would I be able to simply put the chip in and access to my numbers? James_E do you have an iphone? I have a trip to the US this month and if it works in Canada, I'll be taking one with me.

Unlocked means you can the SIM card from other GSM carriers and you can still use your phone. This means that if you buy a phone in the US, get it unlocked, then you can go overseas and put in pre-paid SIMs or whatever, and use it. Unlocked is the way to go if you have a GSM carrier...it's just too bad they all are terrible in the US.

No I don't have one. However I go over to that mall for lunches alot, so I can stop in and see what the story really is doing. If I can I'll try to put my Rogers SIM card into an iPhone if they have one there.10spro wrote:Yeah, it would be interesting to understand the true meaning of "unlocked". I was there Tuesday (which is when I saw the signs) but they weren't open, the sign said they were taking an extra long Labour day weekend.
That's Visual Voicemail.
The carrier has to set up something on the server end to enable this feature, which lets people delete voicemails without listening to them, because they cvould see from whom each voicemail is.
So Apple gave only AT&T the server software to make this work on the AT&T network.
Big pricecut, pissing off a lot of people who paid $600. You can get the 4 GB while supplies last for $299.

Impressive. You wonder how much more they could have sold if they weren't tied to just AT&T.

Anyone interested in a used 8GB iPhone for $299? It's got some relatively minor cosmetic scratches on the back (screen is still perfect) and works great.
I'm so obsessed that I might use the $100 to buy a pristine new phone, just because I have mental issues when it comes to Apple products; I polish my laptops with special cleaning cloths etc...
PM if interested.

Still, someone can save $100 if they don't mind a few scratches on a perfectly functional phone by taking advantage of my sickness.
It's apple freaks like you that give the rest of us "normal" apple folks a really bad name.

Finally got over to that store while it was open.
They are selling 8GB iPhone for $799. (no more 4GB)
The unlock service is $120. They will unlock a phone that you bring in, doesn't have to be one of theirs.
They offer the pure software unlock or the hardware unlock. The software unlock only unlocks it enough so that you can use it on any network. The hardware unlock does more.. but the girl wouldn't say, but I think it's more capability like running unsigned software or something.
The hardware unlock has no soldering so doesn't void warranty (yeah right!)
She wouldn't let me plug my Rogers sim into one... she GUARANTEED it would work on Rogers though and said if I wanted one they would do it and wouldn't make me pay without seeing it working.

I just got one of these from my boss, not sure if it is a reward or golden handcuffs but it is awesome.
I have a question thought, is it not possible to have it work with 2 different iTunes locations? I can't seem to get it to connect to my home one without erasing everything I have on it from my work copy.
