fsquid wrote:DB, what kind of RAM can I get to upgrade my rig. Right now I have two Samsung 512MB DDR2 PC4200 REV 2 sticks. I'm assuming that the PC4200 is the important figure, right? I want to upgrade to 2 GB.
Yes, the PC4200 is the speed of the ram. You need to consult your motherboard manufacturer (manual, website, whatever) to find out the fastest ram you can put in it (most likely the 4200 is the fastest). Then, the easiest way to upgrade if you don't mess around with computers much, just go to the Crucial website (www.crucial.com) and you can put in the model number of your PC and it'll spit out the correct ram. Otherwise, just typing in 2gb PC3200 in the newegg search engine, it'll come back with all of your options.

Depending on your PC, if it's a fast machine with an awesome graphics card, you don't want to skimp on the quality of the ram. Faster ram with lower cas timings and whatnot, but that's probably way more information than you need. Just get a couple sticks (look for 2 x 1gb for the cheapest deals) that are highly rated on Newegg.com and you'll be fine. The reviews on Newegg are usually right on the money, so definitely pay attention to most of them. Of course you get the obligatory "this ram ROXXR", so skip over those. LOL.

Ok then. Really everyone should know how to upgrade ram add video cards, and check for faulty wiring. Its really no different than tying your shoe.

If they don't want to pay the dumbass geeksquad 100 bucks to replace a wire, then hell yes they should figure out how to do it themselves.

DB you seem to know your stuff when it comes to computers. It's your condescending know it all attitude that I find off putting.

If you're not computer savvy, buy from a popular company like HP or Dell. That way if something goes wrong right away you can get it serviced for FREE without the hassle.

Don't worry.. I know MANY people who wouldn't have a clue on how to take a cover off their pc's.

I'm just saying...you should at least ATTEMPT to figure out what's wrong, rather than paying some dork from the geek squad, who doesn't know half as much as he/she thinks they do.

Were you busy analyzing your motherboard temperature graphs?

Don't fret though...I think one of the nerds gets to date one of the hot chicks in that movie.

Much better! Now go defrag your hard drive or something. There must be
fragmented clusters and lost blocks scattered everywhere!

The scene in No. 1 where Ehren takes a sh*t in the display toilet in the hardware store is epic American cinema. :) :) :)

Take care,

No. Your link above points to nothing. That's the issue, I believe.

Either would work fine...assuming you're not trying to push a 24" Widescreen monitor or anything. The graphics card isn't all that good.

I'd probably get a cheaper computer and upgrade the graphics separately because it's by far the most important component when it comes to gaming these days. Any Core 2 Duo processor will work fantastic. The more expensive of the two you linked is a quad core which is severe overkill with that weak video card.

Wouldn't look like crap...you just don't have the horsepower in that machine to push a display at 1280x720 most likely. You'd have to tone down a lot of details. It may be okay...but any games built from now on would severely tax those machines.

I'm just going to stick with my 360 for now. I just can't convince myself to spend that much just to race on the computer.
