Anyone play Furious Karting?

Post by pk500 »

Hi all:

Has anyone here played Furious Karting for the Xbox? I´ve read it´s not a Mario Kart-style game, but I´ve also read it´s not a karting sim.

So what the hell is it? Does anyone have any impressions?

I´m curious about it, as it´s $29.99.

Thanks!

I too am VERY curious about this title. I think the gameplay movies I´ve seen look great for a $29.99 game.

Could be fun. Maybe it will be $19.99 soon.

Hey guys -

I´ve been playing it some and it´s really a pretty fun game for the price. It´s got that pickup and play feel.

The scenario mode is done by picking one of the racers from the two teams. You then have to make the team, which leads you to competeing against the other team through series of 4,6,8 race championships. Eventually they add a third team (only 2 teammates?) which make your races contain 10 carts. There are cut scenes beteen the races (for example, one shows the other teams messing with your kart, then the next race you don´t have full power, etc...)

Control and sense of speed are both good. You feel like your planted to the ground just as karts are. The racing engine is done well enough that you don´t have to worry about doing the tricks and power-ups to win the races (at least up to where I´m at). So far, there doesn´t appear to be any rubber band AI either - if you run good laps, you´ll pull away.

One cool thing they did do is the use of custom soundtracks - if you or a teammate is leading, you can set the sound to play any music on your hard drive. There are a couple team challenges where it is nice to know if your team is ahead when you are not.

Let me know any specific things and I´ll try to help - for $30 it a pretty good title.

Rented this one last night. Only played it for 30 minutes or so, so my impressions are very superficial, but I´m very underwhelmed.

I know it´s an arcade racer, but you hardly ever need to use the brakes, which is silly. Just lift for a second, and you can make most corners.

The sense of speed isn´t that good, either.

It seems like Infogrames tried to capture the magic of Looney Tunes Space Race for the Dreamcast -- a great kart-style arcade racer -- with the power-up and destruction items in Furious Karting. But for some reason, FK has nowhere near the fun factor as Looney Tunes Space Race.

I´ll play this more, but there´s a better chance for Middle East peace than me buying this game. I know it´s $29.99 new, but there are way better racers available new for this price or lower on the Xbox.

Take care,
