1. Tecmo Bowl (NES)
2. WE7 (PS2)
3. Micro League Baseball- Would still play this game if I could. (C64)
4. Front Page Sports Football (PC)
4a. Championship Manager in any year. I really love this game.
4b. Bases Loaded Baseball.

I had to squeeze a few more in there. I would also like to include Madden because it set the standard and NHL ´94 because it ws the best and in some ways still is the best.

No surprises here..

1. Champ Manager..from its first incarnation in 1992 (Amiga) to CM 03/04, it has entranced me and led to the destruction of 3 mice and one stress ball.

2. Madden 94 (Sega MD) - when it finally dawned on me that video games could simulate NFL action.

3. Pro Evo 3 (PS2) - gooooolllllllll !

4. HH2001 (PC) - when it dawned slowly on me that there was some strategy in baseball, and that it wasn´t just rounders for blokes.

5. NCAA 2004 (XB) - spent many happy hours building my school dynasty with this. I nearly junked one whole year when my alter-ego was knocked out for the season as a senior in week 2..

Many of the other games mentioned strike a happy remembrance..I picked up Front Page Soccer for £5 at a car boot sale, and Track and Field is probably the only arcade game that I played enough to get blisters (apart from Bank Panic, which is the only arcade game I ever became truly great at).

The older baseball and football ones are the ones that I´ve not heard of, although it´s clear that a number of you harbour fond memories of something called Tecmo Bowl.

Dave,

Download a Nintendo emulator and find a ROM file of Super Tecmo Bowl for the Nintendo. It´s the best football game ever for the Nintendo...likely the best sports game ever for the Nintendo.

People still play it in online leagues and make mods for it, updating the players for the 2002 season and making college football patches. It´s definitely not a "deep" game, but it is terribly fun.

And if people want to vote for more than 5 games, they can. Just make sure to rank them in the order that you prefer them, so I can tabulate the scores accordingly. And if you haven´t voted yet....well, VOTE.
5. Jarrett & Labonte Racing: Since all my other top picks have been chosen already, J&L is included partly for some new blood. But it´s still a superb racing (as opposed to driving) game. Competitive AI, great selection of tracks, a decent career mode, hilarious Ned Jarrett pronunciations. What´s not to love?

Wow, I completely forgot this game. A great racing game and spiritual successor to the wonderful TOCA series on PSX. And yes, how could we forget Ned Jarrett´s tongue nearly exploding while trying to pronounce "Nurburgring."
but really, this is 2004, and nearly everything is considered to be gay now

You can submit a "revised" ballot if you want. Racing games are legitimate.
Or "Dijon" pronounced "Die-joan."

Great game, though. Good call! I also loved Touring Car Challenge, the second TOCA game on the PSX, as sliding the Formula Fords around the British circuits was worth the price of the game alone.

In no paticular order

Tecmo Super Bowl: Very realistic for it´s day. You could play a full season and it saved on the cartridge. Simply one of the best two player games ever. I can´t tell you how many great last minute game winning touchdown catches my friends and i witnessed with that game.

Bases Loaded: Most realistic console game at the time. Loved how each team really had personallity. The pitchers had different deliveries, the batters had different stances and swings.

High Heat Series: Just the best

NHL 94/95/96/98: I can´t really just pick one. 94 is kind of considered the classic, but the first one i really played a lot was 95 on PC. 96 on PC was the first to go 3D (the arenas, players were still sprites). It introduces modem play as well if i´m not mistaken. Had fun playing two player. I know some people around her think 98 is garbage but at the time it had a lot going for it. It was the first to introduce stategies and it was the first to take advantage of a 3d accelerator. It´s also the last hockey game that i´ve played an entire season with. These days i just get too ticked off with imperfections to get all the way through a season. Anyway, despite how easy it was and all the cheap moves you could pull off, i liked 98 a lot. And it easily has the best intro to a sports game ever made. "Are you afraid of the masked man?" Nothing pumped me up more than that.

Eeastside Hockey Manager: I love this game despite it´s flaws. If i were a soccer fan or knew anything about the game other than the basics i could image myself putting CM in this slot but i am a hockey fan, so EHM gets the nod here. I just can´t wait for EHM: FE. Finally i will be able to experience what so many people have been enjoying with the CM series, except in the world of hockey.

Honorable mentions: Ice Hockey (NES), Double Dribble (NES), Blades of Steel (NES), NBA 2k/2k1 (DC)
Here are some of my favorite series:

01. High Heat Baseball by 3DO - The best baseball game ever.
02. Links by Microsoft/Access Software - Many great memories of this series.
03. Nascar Racing by Sierra/Papyrus - I remember dreaming of a game like this when I was young.
04. NCAA Football by EA Sports - I can´t even count the number of seasons I´ve played of this game.
05. NFL2K by Sega Sports/Visual Concepts - Great series of games. Just keeps getting better.
06. Front Page Sports Football by Sierra/Dynamix - Played many seasons worth of this one.
07. NBA2K by Sega Sports/Visual Concepts - Really enjoyed this series on the Dreamcast.
08. John Madden Football by EA Sports - Enjoyed all incarnations of this game (Apple IIe -> now)
09. Bases Loaded by Jaleco (NES) - I really got hooked on this game and the "individuality" of the teams.
10. NHL Hockey by EA Sports - Really liked the first PC version with the HUGE players guide.

Honorable Mention: Grand Prix Legends by Sierra/Papyrus - Great game. Just wish I was better at it...
Honorable Mention: Dusty Diamond All-Star Softball (NES) by Broderbund - One of my favorite games of all time. Probably has more personality than any of the aforementioned games. Really wish they had an updated version with online multiplayer.

I´m a little late to the party, but here´s my list:

1. Front Page Sports football ´95 (PC)
2. High Heat Baseball 2001 (PC)
3. Techmo Super Bowl (NES)
4. Smackdown: Here comes the pain (PS2) Not sure if wrestling really constitutes a sports game, but if it does, it´s in the top 5.
5. Moto Racer (PSX) Not very sim-like by today´s standards, but at the time it was the best two-wheeled racer ever. Can´t beat being able to races superbike and motocross.

6. (In case wrestling doesn´t count): Supercross Circuit (PSX).

Jared, how are going to handle things like High heat? I know it´s up there as a sereis, but will 2001 and 2002 be counted separatly, or will they be counted together under High Heat?

Series will be scored together, UNLESS there is a major gameplay/console difference between them. For instance, the NHL series will be divided into "eras" (with say, NHL, NHLPA, and NHL 94 being part of the first era). High Heat 2001 and 2002 are part of the same era, so the votes will count together.

If you haven´t voted yet, DO SO. I won´t close the voting yet, but I´d like to start writing the series up in the next few weeks. I´ll probably turn it into a top-20, and release it in segments.
This was on my final cut list - Gretzky Hockey on the Amiga was perhaps the purest simulation of hockey I´ve played to this day. I gotta confess my need for eye candy overcame my appreciation for this game. Now that I look back, I realize how faithful this game was to the physics of hockey.

I'm bumping this, since I'm going to compile this and post it sometime in the next two weeks. If you have not voted (or even if you have and want to change your vote), here's your chance. Put in your vote for the five best sports games of ALL TIME, any platform. Votes have been tabulated, and I'll be releasing the results on the front page in the next few weeks.

The only way I can do this is to not base it on anything other than the amount of time I spent playing the games. Really tough to do, though.

1) High Heat Baseball
2) NCAA Football
3) Front Page Sports: Football
4) Out of the Park Baseball
5) TV Sports Basketball
