Thanks for the reccomendation on these guys. I like their newest album. An interesting listen. A few annoying tracks but the solid ones are great tunes!greggsand wrote:Saw Blitzen Trapper last night @ Spaceland (L.A.). They're the REAL deal - great live, great record...

speaking of reunions (a few pages back). A buddy is dragging me, against my will, to go see Squeeze tonight??? this reunion stuff is out of hand. The real head-scratcher is that it's at the Greek (L.A.) - a rather large outdoor venue. is there really that much demand?? I guess I'll find out.... At least it's free!

Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which features Gilson Lavis on drums, have just last weekend finished a tour of the UK, so the odds are it's just Difford and Tilbrook. What happened to get those two in the same room as each other again? I seem to have missed that.

It's really cool. Still pretty high on the 'difficulty' scale, but much more "catchy" than the last 2.Spooky wrote:Another new album from them? Thanks for the heads up. I still love their debut the best!greggsand wrote:Fiery Furnaces "Widow City" is loose - I'm pleased to say it's waaay easier to get into than the last few. Love it!
RE:Squeeze. So, I went & it was OK. I was surprised that I knew more songs than I thought. I was correct about 'overshooting' the venue. It was 3/4-full at best.
New Years resolution for 08:No Reunion Shows! Of course, Pavement wouldn't count....

There was an interview with them in Mojo last month or the month before, where it seemed that would work together on stage, but couldn't foresee writing together or recording as one of the two has a stroppy missus who insisted on seeing all the lyrics first.GB_Simo wrote:Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which features Gilson Lavis on drums, have just last weekend finished a tour of the UK, so the odds are it's just Difford and Tilbrook. Saw Wilco at the Greek Wednesday (5th row woo hoo). having seen these cats since their 2nd show ever (miss nights!), they're the best live I've ever seen em. 2&1/2 years w/ the same lineup has done them well. Love or hate the new album(i wasn't too crazy about it), give it a chance live. Also helps to 'smoke em if u got em' right before 'Impossible Germany'....

Excerpts from a recent L.A. Daily News interview with one of my all-time musical heroes, Johnny Rotten:
>>>>>
Q: What’s the state of songwriting these days?
A: It’s horrible. Music is just another career choice for young people. They’re not using any of their life experiences. That was the joy for me — writing songs that directly related to my life. And that isn’t happening anymore.”
Q: Why is that?
A: It’s all lost in a malaise of video games and mummy and daddy buying everything for you. The result is you get alleged pop stars preening about how much wealth they’ve got. It’s this smug cynicism. People just sit on their lazy computerized asses, complaining about everything and saying, “I want, I want.”
Q: You were an early supporter of reggae.
A: Reggae to me is not an affectation. I heard it growing up in the council flats (the U.K.’s low-cost government housing). It’s a way of life, it’s not entertainment. Now saying that, Jamaican music has been ruined by the American gangsta rap influence. There’s a nastiness and bitterness in the music now. I don’t think they know who the enemy is anymore.

Lydon is spot-on with many things, as usual.
Take care,

Has Rotten ever liked any particular period of music?? He thinks every band is crap but his. I suppose that's the 'punk rock' way.
If u think dudes like Al Gore are hypocrites for the things they say vs the way they live, don't google Lydon's LA's home...
That said, I miss the guy raising hell.
THAT said, he still owes me money for all those crappy late-80's PIL albums...

I'm a huge PJ fan so I'm biased, but I love the new Eddie Vedder solo cd/soundtrack to the Sean Penn-directed Into the Wild. My only complaint is that it's on the short side (even with the great bonus songs that are available through Itunes). Otherwise, I can't wait to play this on some drives through the country in the fall weather.

Is there a more tired, cliched pop-rock band today than the Foo Fighters? I grabbed the band's new record over the weekend, and it's rinse-wash-repeat Foo Fighters as you've known them since the debut record in 1995.
Formula: Hook-laden verses followed by repetitive chorus that Grohl sings after the first verse and screams after subsequent verses. Add a break somewhere in the song that slows the tempo with Grohl singing quietly, followed by a Grohl scream or solo to increase the tempo. Toss in a sweet little ballad for "variety."
Rinse, wash, repeat.
I can't believe I'm writing this, as I LOVED the Foos through "There Is Nothing Left to Lose." But I can't think of a more respected rock-pop band in the last 10 years that has done nothing to advance its sound or test itself than this band.
P.S.: Got Springsteen's new record, too. Solid, but seems a bit too much of a forced return to the "old Jersey sound" after the "Seeger Sessions." I liked "The Rising" -- the last record with the E Street Band -- more than this one, but it's not bad.
Take care,
