Monday Night Forza (7/30): The 'Ring

Post by Zeppo »

OK folks, who wants to give 5 laps at the Nordschleife in the R3s a try tonight?

We'll gather at 10:30 and run a one-lap warmup/ discover the pit entrance (it's just after the end of the long front straight, on the right immediately after the first chicane)/ reconnaissance lap. Then after a quick bathroom break, we'll run the 5-lap race which should take about 35 to 40 minutes. It will require one pit stop I believe, and though it may be possible to make it through 4 laps before or after pitting, it may be a gamble, so to be safe it's best to pit either after lap 2 or lap 3.

Who's in?

As usual, if we don't have at least 6 cars minimum, we'll skip the big race and just run a mix of sprint races, at least until the call of ShadowRun takes me over! :D

I guess I'm in. Like wpw, I'm not a big fan of the ring races, nor the R3's. Just seems too fast and out of control, especially at the 'ring. But if that's the consensus, then I guess so.

Out on the Ring. Too hard for me. Maybe I'll race some NASCAR since I can only handle turns in one direction.

slimer, you were racing OK at Maple Valley the other week while I was on my burn from the stern. If nothing else, a few laps of the 'Ring with human company is experience and you might pick up a few pointers - once you demystify the place, it's just another racetrack, albeit a very long one...you're sure you can't be tempted?

Now that I finally have a new moden and a far better connection to go with it, I'm in.

And one pit stop will definitely have to be made in a 5-lap race on this track for fuel alone.

Thanks for the kind words. I was being slightly facetious. I am not a contender to win any of these races, but I have to put in quite a few laps at any of the tracks to be middle of the pack. I am even ok with last place, if I feel like I have prepared enough. The Ring is long I feel like I am guessing on every turn. I can't get enough reps to feel comfortable. It almost feels like rally racing to me.

well, i can't figure out how to post a forza picture of Fshguy and me ramming each other into the wall at Suzuka. . . . But there's a link. Not the best pic, didn't have time to get just the right moment but you get the idea!

Anyway that was pretty good stuff. I wish we could run 20 cars at the 'ring, it would be much more fun and interesting. But all the naysayers can rest assured, we won't be doing more than 1 lap at the 'ring again; we've done it, it's over.

It was interesting how there's enough fuel to get through 4 laps, maybe, but the tires seemed to be going off for all of us in the 3rd lap. I'm amazed i avoided any engine damage with all the times I hit the wall, but I guess i was careful enough to hit them lightly and only take body damage.

Teal, that's weird you got the parallel universe thing going. That happened to fshguy one time. If you had finished the race, you would have had a nice, fat 1st place payoff!

Yeah, but that's not right. I was sucking badly-there's no need to be rewarded for it...

Sorry guys, I got really frustrated and turned off my 360. I wrecked my car in the beginning and had to go in reverse to pit. By the time my car was semi-fixed, I was behind the 7th place (tealboy I think) by something like 8000+. I won't even be able to finish with the 5 minute limit.

I will not participate the next ring event because I have never really raced on it and I don't have any tuned R cars anyway. Basically, I suck. :)

Zep, I saw that in rear view and I had to save the replay too. Ten minutes I spent watching that again...rotation of the day for me, though, was WillHunting's (I think) early on lap one at the 'Ring - beautifully executed.

If you get the chance and haven't already viewed it, Jon and I side by side through the chicane on the final lap at Suzuka is worth watching - I was a little too far back to launch my planned run up the inside, so I'd settled for second until I thought I saw Jon defending against fresh air in the finest Fisichella tradition. I couldn't quite get it done around the outside of the right hander and he toughed it out through the left hander for the victory. As for the tyres at the 'Ring, mine weren't the delightful shade of red you managed to get but there was a warm orange glow to them by the end. The Bee-Em is a fun little car, and slides very progressively, but it's easy to chew the rears up.

On the subject of tyres, you're all really, really cautious when they're cold and I'm not sure I didn't hit anyone as a consequence. If I clipped anyone from behind I apologise - a couple of times, I just wasn't expecting people to slow down.

Finally, opportunistic overtaking moves are a bad idea if you can't tell the other person you're there. I know this having met Kruza in the middle at Suzuka's esses, and though I came off worst and so repaid whatever karmic debt I may have incurred, I'm sure he got involved purely through not knowing I was there - sorry, mate.

Heh, no problem. I was able to regain control of the car after contact. Later in lap 3 I had messed up when I slightly misjudged the braking distace I had approaching the chicane (I race with no assists on) and two of my tires went off the track. I slowly got back on the track but made sure you were past me before getting up to speed.

And as for the Ring, I got into an unfortunate fender-bender near the beginning of the first lap. My engine was moderately damaged (orange) and the front end of my car got really bent up (red). Consequently, with this damage the car ended up with so much understeer that it severely affected the speed at which my car could handle all those medium-speed bends. Even after getting the engine fixed after a pit stop, my race was done because of the bodywork damage.

I thought you must have no assists on when I saw you sliding off the road, and so I thought if I made a mistake exiting the chicane just to emphasise that I was in the no assists club too it might warm your heart. Brothers in arms and all that. Either that or I was so keen to get after Jon that I nearly flung it off the road at the same time as you, one or the other. The hit at the 'Ring looked beastly - not much you could do and a couple of us were lucky to get by, while your luck was elsewhere at the time.

Hey man, accidents happen. That's a part of racing. No hard feelings.

I didn't want to brake hard at that moment or my car would've taken just about everyone behind me out, and then it would've been major carnage. So I sped up and tried to swirve near the edge of the track and hope for the best.
