Monday Night Racing: Forza (7/23)
Folks:
Last week fshguy requested that we try a 5 lap race at the 'ring this time around. I don't know if that's because he really wants to do it, or because he knows I really want to do it at some point and he wants to get it out of the way!
I think we should take his advice and run in the R4 or R3 class instead of the As. State your preferences here as to class. It shouldn't matter if anyone has R3 or R4 cars in their career garage, since you can't make upgrades to them anyway. I don't know about tweaking settings for them offline, so if that's a big deal, we should discuss it further and maybe do a 25 lapper in some other class at some other circuit.
Anyway, the time to get together is 10:30p edt. I think we can forgo the warmup this time at the 'ring, since it's so long, but does anyone but me think it would be beneficial to do a quick warmup at some other track, such as Maple Valley, just to get a little accustomed to these cars, or should we just jump into the main event cold? Let me know.
At 10:40, we would do the warmup or start the race, as the case may be, unless the room is full before then. I'm pretty sure you will have to pit once for fuel in a 5 lapper at the 'ring; it was necessary in the original Forza and as far as I can tell the fuel consumption/ capacity is pretty much the same this time as well. It's possible one could make it around 4 times without pitting, but I'm not sure.
If there's a lot of objection to doing the 'ring this time, that's fine, and we can come up with something else. 5 laps at the 'ring, even in R3 cars is going to be a pretty long race (I'm a little wary of R2 and R1 as yet, but hey maybe that's an option to consider as well).
Who's in, and what are your opinions?

In. I don't mind whether or not there's a warm up, being comfortable-ish with the cars and secure about which way the Nordschleife goes, but it might be beneficial to have a little run around to get into the idea of running in traffic before we all go charging into the first chicane at the 'Ring.

Not to mention that pitting will be a must if this is a 5 lap race since fuel tank will be close to empty by the beginning of the 4th lap.
And on a related note... does everyone know where the pit area is? For those who don't, the entrance to pit lane is past the first chicane and just before the following tight right hander.

Any R class is fine.
What might be more fun is a perhaps R4 or R3, and restrict to a certain type of car (ie. all 911 cup cars).

Didn't we do a little one lap sprint like that a few weeks ago? I got clear of traffic early on and I've no idea what happened behind me, but if there was some decent racing going on then it might be worth considering.jondiehl wrote:What might be more fun is a perhaps R4 or R3, and restrict to a certain type of car (ie. all 911 cup cars).
Kruza makes a good point - often with the warmup, people use it as a way of scoping out the pitlane entrance for the main event, and at somewhere like the Nordschleife it's going to be important that those unsure of its whereabouts locate it early (as he says, it's quite a sneaky one on the exit of the opening chicane, and it's easy to not notice it). At Maple Valley last week, if you missed it in warmup you probably had 17 or 18 tours before the fuel ran dry so there was time to find it, and that's a luxury you don't have when you're on a 13 mile long racetrack.

I'm all about variety, so we'll stick with the policy of a class restriction only.jondiehl wrote:In.

It would be nice to have a chance to find the pit entrance and exit in a warmup, so maybe we should do one lap on the Nordschleife for the warmup. In these cars, it shouldn't take all that much longer than our usual 4-lap warmups, anyway, and really the main thing I like about the warmup is the chance to get the surprises and 'ooh, I didn't remember that!" out of the way.

That's cool.Zeppo wrote:

Sometimes it's fun to run a true "stock" type of event with default setup's and the same car. Unlike an entire field of say, Ford GT's, with the 911 GT3 Cup cars they look different with the liveries (11 total), model year's (02-06) so everyone can have a different looking race car and slightly different performance in the same R class.

Sorry all - I'm afraid I fell asleep. Don't remember a thing between 2.30am and 4.30am, by which time I assumed the race would have been over anyway. I do want to do 5 laps at the 'Ring, though - in fact I was really looking forward to it - so if we're all still up for it I'll have to go for a more restful Sunday night next week and invest in some matchsticks.
