Good racing last night, fellas.
I sent a message to Zep after the race (and would have said something in the lobby had I not been mute - 5 in the morning, people sleeping, that kind of thing) to advise that had I thought about it, I wouldn't have put some of you in a position where you couldn't reach the finish line before the cut-off. I didn't have to do that, because I had ample opportunity to back the pace off a bit without pressure and I was a bit concerned about spoiling races anyway - I couldn't tell Fshguy when I was coming up behind him, and I'm sure he didn't see me until I went by, since I bottled out of driving past going into Club, smoked all four trying not to careen into the side of him and missed by about an inch, and had I noticed someone nearly punting me down the fairway in a totally unnecesssary move I might have said something...
Hopefully it didn't bugger anyone's enjoyment of the night's racing. That stock Murcielago is a very well behaved car, but I want a go in those AWE Tuning S4 machines - every time I saw one it was going sideways, it looked like a blast.

So you were the one in the Murcel.... Dang you took off like a jack rabbit and I never caught up (fell behind to 4th place, ultimately). Great race, only had 1 minor bumping action with someone but we both came out relatively unscathed.
Good race, too bad more people couldn't finish within the 120 second time limit.

I was within a few car lengths when the timer expired.WillHunting wrote:Good race, too bad more people couldn't finish within the 120 second time limit.
I think I'm going to try racing with the controller for the next week and see how it goes since everyone else seems to have abandoned the wheel. It will definitely make it less of a hassle to fire up the box and run a few laps for practice.
The AWE Tuning S4 is a fun car to drive, and I slid it every possible way including in the dirt, so it was probably me you saw. I would like to use the excuse of using a lower PI stock car, but you won with an even lower PI stock car, so there goes that excuse.
Even so, next time I will make sure I have a chance to get a career car up to snuff so that I have a chance to adjust the few things that I know what to do with, gearing and downforce, and maybe check out Zeppo's spring rates.

Yah it sucks you couldn't finish. We have the same car too don't we (Mit Evo 8 MR)? Well it wasn't much, I got around 29k credits, you could get that racing the oval once.mixdj1 wrote:I was within a few car lengths when the timer expired.WillHunting wrote:Good race, too bad more people couldn't finish within the 120 second time limit. It would have been nice to cross the line a collect a few credits for the effort. Oh well, it was still a fun race. Looking forward to next time.

Adam, don't sweat it. It would have been nice to get some credits, but it was all my fault for not setting the timer to 5 min in a race where the lap time was just about 2 min. Of course, since you passed me on your final lap, and I think you passed Mix too, the race should have been over for us already when we crossed the line behind you. Alas, 'tis Forza where they've never heard of a checkered flag (nor a chequered one, for that matter). Even so, it was nice to race with you, or see you pass me more like it. Maybe we need to give you a one-class handicap next time?
It was a ton of fun. We had a nice dense pack for about 6 or 8 laps at the start of the race, and that was probably the best, tightest group racing over the most laps I've ever done online. I had a couple of side to side bumps that did no damage, but then going into Club at one point I was bumped into the gravel from behind and got some bad rear body damage that seemed to effect my top speed: I could never get to 5th gear again on either of the straights, and never got close to the 1:58 I put up in the early going. In the end, I was too sloppy and made too many mistakes to worry that that punt was what killed my race, though. I just made too many mistakes.
Mix and I ended up racing with each other for just about the entire 2nd half of the race, and that was awesome. Earlier on in the race it became clear the 'walking on eggshells Mix' is a thing of the past, as he forced his way underneath me in Woodcote to pass me. He just jammed himself in there! Stock cars are nice for that, i must say. Anyway with me on Sport tires and him on Race tires, we had some interesting ebb and flow between us especially after we pitted. One of us would get ahead, make a mistake, the other would take the lead, only to make a mistake, etc. We were racing for 5th, but it was still great stuff over the long run.
Thanks for racing, everyone. It was really cool even though it was pretty long. I didn't really mind the distance too much, though I couldn't have run another race for a while. My fingers were pretty shot!
I can't seem to make a really good car, and I can't seem to drive consistently enough to be competitive, but it's still lots of fun. If only (if only) this game could hold 16 cars, it would make this kind of race exponentially more fun, but oh well. It was still pretty damn good stuff.
So, should we stick with the As for a few races? I seem too have collected a few A cars and had trouble picking which one to go with for this race. It seems like a good class for us. Of course, C and D can provide some fun racing as well. I definitely want to keep these going. We should be good to go again next Monday.

Yeah, I've got an EVO 8 tuned for for B and A class. I've been a long time Mitsubishi fan. My Gran Turismo (1,2, and 3) garages were full of Mitsubishis (mainly FTOs and GTOs back then). I wanted to experiment with a RWD car so I built a Mazda RX-7 for the race last night but I didn't have enough time to run laps with it so at the last minute I decided to stick with my EVO.WillHunting wrote:We have the same car too don't we (Mit Evo 8 MR)? And the amazing thing was that I was that agressive without any alcohol in my system last night.Zeppo wrote:Earlier on in the race it became clear the 'walking on eggshells Mix' is a thing of the past, as he forced his way underneath me in Woodcote to pass me.
But that was some seriously fun racing. I really need to try to come to grips with a RWD car though. The EVO has great acceleration and handles really well but you would almost always pull away in the straights.
I had my downforce relatively high for that track, so that might have allowed me to get on the power earlier than you. Also, I've adjust the differential based on some info I've found at the Forza forums, and tweaked that setting a bit along with the rear downforce to help me keep from stepping out under acceleration on some of those corners. As it was, Club still was difficult for me. That long right hander on the exit of Club is a toughie for me in that car. I probably could have used a bit more rear downforce just for that corner.
This springs/ suspension tuning calculator thing is very handy for me. It may be giving me really bad numbers, I don't know, but the cars seem to handle better with those figures and are tweakable then with some test driving. They give you generic differential settings based on drive type, which are clearly not accurate, but again it's a good starting place from which to tweak. I was definitely adjusting that in test driving to help keep from oversteer under acceleration out of a corner.
One more opportunity to mini-rant about the glaring holes in this game which extend beyond the lame 8-car limit. If only forza allowed a full 'race event' online, where we could practice as we wish (a lá IndyCar) and adjust our tuning during a timed practice session (it was so cool not to have to wait for everyone in IndyCar to start practice - guys could come in whenever after the session started and jump in and do laps); then a true qualifying session of whatever type (timed where you could go in and out of the lobby and the race again like IndyCar, or a one-lap deal); and then the race complete with flags, such as the yellow flag or the white flag or that most magical of flags, the checkered.
Forza, I love your driving/ car collecting/ upgrade system/ tuning/ damage and tire model etc. etc., but you would be better if you were a true 'racing' game as well.

Slimer, I came by you while you were in Becketts with the car pointing at about 80 degrees to the direction of travel and I couldn't believe you hung on to it. It looked all sorts of fun and it was a pretty impressive display of car control too.
Zep, I saw from my time trial friends leaderboard and my only other Forza race night that I might have a little edge on speed, so I thought picking the Murcielago might level things off. What I didn't know, since I'd never driven it prior to last night, was how easy the Lambo is to drive at the limit (mind, I still dropped it at Maggotts, of all places, in the warm up), so in trying to give myself a challenge I think I probably made things easier for myself. I've ran slower times in higher PI cars there, certainly.
