Monday Night Racing: Forza (7/9)

Post by Zeppo »

Who's up for another 25 lap race tonight? I think we have to to Silverstone this week, and I would like to do A class cars there unless there is consensus among those signing up to do other cars.

10:30 is the time to get together, and we'll run a 4 lap warmup/practice at about 10:40. Then it's the 25 lap race.

Who's in?

OK now I am thinking maybe we should consider a few options for this race at Silverstone.

A.) We can do D or C class creepers at the shortest configuration (the Club circuit, i think), or

B.) We can do A at the full circuit, or

C.) We can do R3 or R2 at the full circuit.

I don't have any R cars in my career garage, but all one can change on any of these cars is the tuning, anyway. I know there was some harrumphing at the R3s last time on the 'ring, but personally the BMW I drove handled really well (maybe some of those cars are more beastly than others?).

I'm just throwing these options out there because I want to hear a bit of feedback. I'd like to make sure everyone feels like they have a car they enjoy for the race, and I'm not sure all of us have a bunch of nice A cars to choose from.

For myself, I am finding that my A cars are not so fast in the top end. I discovered this doing the A series of races in the offline mode and being forced to do the oval where a few of the lower p.i. AI cars just walk by me as I struggle to get past 185mph or so. Any ideas what's wrong with my cars? I could remove the spoilers, but that would push the p.i. too high. . . hmmm.

Oh, and it wouldn't be right if I didn't mention how stupid and lame the 8-car limit is for this game. Dammit but this game would be so much better with 16 or more.

Count me in. I haven't touched Forza the last week or so... going to be alittle rusty.

One more thing: check out this handy little tool I came upon:

http://fm2calc.ruinedmylife.com/

It takes the curb weight, the weight distribution, and the type of drive train of the car (FF, FR, etc.) and poops out a very nice set of springs and roll bar settings to make a good starting point for further tweaking. Seems to be pretty useful to me, but then I'm not out there doing a ton of tweaking, so I don't know if it's way off the mark. Cars seem to handle pretty nicely when I use these numbers.

I personally like the slow cars (D or C range) and have done more racing with them offline, but I had a pretty good time with the R class at the ring last week (that is until I got put into the wall twice anyway). I have a few A class cars in my career garage though with plenty of cash to spend to tweak, so bottom line is that I'm flexible and could race any class after spending a few minutes tweaking. B class is probably the only class in which I don't have a car I like.

And when I say tweaking, I really mean buying upgrades. I don't get into the actual tweaking of settings because I have no idea what I'm doing and I like to spend all my time in-game actually racing.

Are we limited to only what's in our career garages?

I like the R cars better than A, but I am just happy to have a chance to race.

Not limited at all, but I think most of us like to have our 'own' cars in the race. When it comes to the R classes, it doesn't make any difference, since you can't change anything but the tuning, which you could figure out and then save that tuning setup to load once you're online.

But the bottom line is there are no restrictions outside of the class. Anyone is free to use an arcade garage car or whatever they want. It's one of the things that is a huge improvement over the first Forza, letting you use arcade garage cars in career mode races online.

OK the roster so far:
  • Zeppo
    wpw
    Mix
Simo (theycallhimsim, they do, they really do)
    Naples
    WillHunting (aka The Praxis)
    sr slimer
    Fshguy
Others who sign up from now on will be alternates, and I will shoot out invites at 10:40 to the alternates to fill any spots still available at that time. If there are enough alternates (as there were last week) I would highly suggest one of them host a 2nd room and do some racing.

Stupid game and its 8-car limit.

I've been playing DiRT for long enough that I don't actually remember the contents of my garage in detail, but given a choice of classes I'd run the fastest one. Having said that, I'll run anything with wheels and an engine and make a decent fist of it, and I had some fun running the A cars at Silverstone last time I was online, but I'd always run the fastest class available given the choice.

Edit: However, I don't tune my cars and I don't take very much pride in them at all, so those who do can play it as they wish and I'll happily tag along with whatever's decided.

Whatever we do, I'd prefer the full circuit. The shorter versions are terrible in comparison.

My vote would be for the A's or R's on the full circuit. And since Fshguy can't make it to the forums I'm going to make that his vote as well. :P ... Actually, his response to the track being Silverstone was:

Adam, i have a feeling if you were in a three-wheeler a class below you'd still be lapping us.

Normally I'd never suggest doing the shorter configurations of a track like this, but since this game only lets us do either 10 or 25 laps of any track (or 50 or 75 if you want), I wouldn't want to do the full circuit in the grocery-getters. 10 wouldn't be nearly enough, and 25 rounds of the full GP circuit would be forever in those things.

Yet another of the 'what the heck are they thinking?' screwups of this game (the limit on lap number options and the 'checkered flag, what's a checkered flag' end of race idiocy are the biggest ones).

Anyway, even though not everyone has chimed in, it is feeling like an A class night, and maybe back to the horsepower-challenged cars for next week. Someday I will come through on my 5-laps at the 'ring madness, though. That may have to be R3 or R2.

And for the record, I don't do much setup tweaking myself. I will mess with the final gear ratio and may adjust the wings (if I have them) from track to track, but I don't do too much else. This setup calculator has been a huge help for me especially up with my A cars. They handle a lot better once I've used that tool to get the base settings. Someone who knows a lot more about this stuff than I do may take exception to that tool, but it seems to be based on real-world calculations to get the base settings. I wish the game would do that on its own, but no.

  Well, the big boys just raced there, so we HAVE to run Silverstone (and get it out of the way. . . ). Two weeks form now they are at the Nurburgring, so I hope the downloadable tracks are available by then (and free). I'm none too keen on the made-up tracks (although that Alpine Ring wasn't a bad one, sort of a Bathurst knock-off), but the addition of the Nurburgring GP circuit is big for me.

Yes, let's go for the A class cars. I'm not sure how competitive we will all be but I look forward to doing a lot more A class stuff in the future, so I'm sure we'll all keep on trying to find that special A class car.

Nope. I love it. It's a man's circuit -- the Copse, Maggott's, Beckett's and Chapel complex is exhilarating.

Take care,

Yes it is, and I also like the last sector from Bridge through Woodcoote and to the end. But I HATE Club, can never see it, always brake way too early or miss it entirely and end up in the gravel, hate hate hate Club. I need a big neon sign or something because I can never see it. I don't have nearly as much trouble at Abbey, though, which is odd. But i don't hate it as much as some do.

Ah, well...too late, it seems. That's okay, I only got like 2 hours of sleep last night, so I may be FUBAR by tonight anyway. You guys have fun, and race clean...
