But isn't that what everyone always says about flaws with particular devices/software/etc.? Rarely do you see all complaints addressed and I doubt that the Iphone will be one of those devices. It is just a case of a device doing TOO much. Trust me, if it were on Verizon, I'd probably get one, so it's not like I hate the device...but you guys claiming that every quibble will be address as soon as a software update is released are expecting way too much. If you want to use that to defend issues with the phone, and that makes you feel better about your 500+ dollar purchase, then that's all good. Complex devices have issues...and those issues persist usually. I'd be more inclined to think that they'd address most of the issues when the 2G version of the phone comes out...that way they can get people to upgrade.

And I'm not singling you out Spooky...every person that I know that owns one says the same thing, so it's a broad statement to the iPhone population.
Understood and good point.

But I do know Apple and they are more likely than any other company to make regular updates and enhancements to their stuff. Just look at how far iTunes has come in the last 2 years (for free upgrades too).

I didn't mean to sound like I am trying to defend the iPhone and some of its lack of features (I just can't bring myself to say "issues" as I truly don't think it has any). I just find it interesting that a lot of people without iPhones are so quick to point out shortcomings without taking the entire package into the picture. And the reviews that say it does not live up to the hype really surprise me.

All BRAND NEW products have quirks...but even the most anti-iPhone people out there have to admit that this thing came out extremely solid!

Someone on Howard Forums is claiming they've activated it on Rogers.

Also, people have been able to unlock the iPod and Wifi Internet features without activating on AT&T.

However, you're probably better off waiting for official support. Plus, I don't think iTunes sells videos outside the US. You can certainly rip DVDs to it though.

As for adding all the features, I can see software updates to add some features but remember how long people clamored for Apple to add FM tuners, voice recorders and support for other codecs? These things NEVER happened and Apple didn't suffer in sales because these were features that only a small segment of the market cared about.

So I wouldn't expect things like tethering or A2DP. Doesn't mean they won't add them but better to assume Apple won't do it.

This will never happen but you know what would be cool to have on a phone.

DirectTV/Dish reception and/or Satellite Radio reception. Maybe iPhone 5g we'll see that. :D

It's called Slingbox. Works fine on the Treo's and Q's of the world. Oh but wait...EDGE isn't fast enough for that. My bad.

Damn I just cannot figure out what the hell they were thinking with EDGE. EVDO is iffy with Slingbox...so no way in hell EDGE works right.

Video playback is suppose to be real good.

Sling has expressed interest in writing a client for the iPhone but of course, there is no SDK or access to the kernel.

But if you think about it, Apple's strategy is to aggregate video content on iTunes, not let you stream. That is why they won't bother with PVR features in AppleTV, because they want people to pay for those TV shows and movies, which in turn will get more studios on board.

As for 3G, they said there are no 3G chips which would have fit the current form factor of the iPhone and also the power consumption curve they were targeting.

There are rumors that they will announce iPhone for UK, Germany and France without 3G, even though the 3G networks in Europe are suppose to be more prevalent and more widely used.

I ordered my iPhone yesterday morning from the local AT&T store and was told to expect about 5 days to a week until it shipped. Well, surprisingly, my debit card was charged and it shipped last night. Got an email with a tracking # and everything. Its due here sometime today :) Pleasant surprise :)

I'm pretty impressed with most everything so far. It definitely has a wow factor. Apple did a very nice job IMO. I was surfing the net on the phone and Edge doesn't seem too bad around here. I still went to mostly mobile sites to limit download time. DSP loaded pretty quickly.

A quick question for you experienced iPod guys...never mind...I think I got it.

A small tragedy today as my iPhone slipped from my hands while using it (for the first time) while standing on the sidewalk. Tragedy only because i treat my Apple products with the kind of care generally reserved for newborns, and I can't stand even a mark.

To call the screen scratchproof is an understatement; this thing took a tumble out of my hands and hit the concrete hard, but the screen and all functions are still PERFECT.

There is a small scuff in the chrome on the lower right corner, and a few surface scratches on the silver backside, but after a 6 foot drop and a slide across concrete it basically still looks new.

Still, I want to cry. I had a full 'rubber' sleeve on it for the first few days, but that was a little like furniture with plastic covering - you keep it from looking like s*** by making it look like s***. It just seemed too pretty to cover up.

If you're like me and really picky about even th smallest scratch, I recommend an ugly case. Either way, sleep soundly knowing that even if your iPhone takes a beating, the screen and function will remain intact.

I sell my stuff when it gets even the smallest scratch. Some may call that OCD...I call it, well, OCD.

I'll pour out a lil' liquor for your homie.

that's how I am about my Razr. I thought it was the slickest looking phone ever since they came out. I finally got one a few months ago and thought that it's too sharp to protect with an ugly cover. Then I got a scratch. I bought a cover and it definitely takes away from it.

I just cannot bring myself to put any sort of protective cover on this thing. Just takes away from the sleekness of it. I came close to buying something yesterday then bailed.

For me, I always want the mew toy to be PERFECT until I get the first ding...then I let go, and just feel like every new ding just adds character. The only reason I buy protective cases is if I definitely plan on selling it after a period of time. I have a GREAT cover for my iPod.

Guys, this thing may be the coolest, most convenient piece of equipment I have every bought. I become even more amazed by this thing every day. It is SO freakin' slick and handy. Even my girl, who is not tech friendly thinks it is unbelievable and loves to think of things to use it for (well, she doesn't like using it but likes me to look things up on it). We use it constantly for locations and phone #'s using Google Maps. We also have used it constantly to look up info on the internet while out. Useful things too, not just 'surfing'.

The iPhone has COMPLETELY changed the cell phone concept for me. It is the TiVo of cell phones. You know how everyone says how TiVo completely changed the way they watched TV and how they can't imagine how they got by before it came out? The iPhone is that same feeling, times ten!!!

I keep discovering cool little things almost daily as well. Like, I had not even used the headphones with the mic on it until yesterday. WOW!

Your listening to music, call comes in, music fades, ringer starts, take the call (AMAZING sound quality for both hearing and talking - I listened to my girl use it while I was on a different pone and the quality is outstanding from the mic), end the call and the music starts up again from where it left off.

The neatest thing that I didn't really realize is that you can do everything on the phone while ON A CALL!!! Either use a headset, the headphones or put the call on speakerphone and you can use every aspect of the phone (I think - I know you can use the web and maps stuff - may not do stuff that requires sound...I'll have to try that). Too cool. Surfing the net while on a call is so neat.

I am absolutely blown away by this gadget. Best...Phone...Evar! :)

I just find it funny that EVERY thing that you and everyone else have mentioned can be done on damn near every smartphone that has come out. Sure, they don't look quite as slick (nor are they as expensive), but functionally, they are the same. It just makes me glad I didn't believe the hype and go to crappy At&t for a "cool" looking device. I sure am glad everyone loves their phones though...it was sure suck if you guys thought you wasted your money. To me, it just means that you never really did use smartphones all that often. My blackberry does everything mentioned in this thread (except wifi, but I don't need it since it's got EV-DO)...and it definitely does email better. But seriously...I'm happy for your guys. It would suck if you guys were disappointed.

Speaking of google maps though...damn that is convenient. Driving to San Diego this past weekend it was miserable traffic-wise, and of course Google Maps has real-time traffic, so we used it to divert us around the freeway and all that stuff. Now that is a beautiful program...and yes, it is available to damn near everyone with a smartphone.

I hear ya...

The actual things that this thing does are not revolutionary however they are done incredibly well. I have a Blackberry. It has Google maps. It's not even close. Yes my BB does e-mail for work very well, but the the e-mail on the iPhone is better, just can't use it for work yet.

So yes, the iPhone doesn't do a whole lot that other smartphones do (except add an iPod with video) but it does everything way better. Way better (like $200-300 better).

Do you have the 8830 or 8800 blackberry? Well, with the 4gb Micro SD card I got for 100 bucks...I've got Ipod features...including Video. The screen isn't as big, but I'm not watching video on the damn thing anyway...both are way to small. And if you say that the iPhone does better email than the BB series, you're on crack! How is it better? I'm curious. What, the interface looks cleaner? You don't even get push mail unless you have like three different accounts setup. I get 4 email accounts synced instantly on my bb...

I am with you Spooky. Its no secret to most people that know me that I am a gadget geek but this thing has taken it to a new level :) Sure, it does alot of what many smartphones can do but the iPhone just does it better and with tremendous style/ease. I am really dumbfounded with the thing. The iPod alone is impressive. The WiFi capabilities caught me off guard. The edge network is good enough for me but when you are near a hotspot or near your home's wireless router the WiFi takes over and its like surfing on a laptop. I'm still trying to figure out the quirks of getting the phone to get my protected connection at home (not sure where to put the WAP key..if anyone knows PM me please). I am only a day or so into the experience and its been awesome.

Well now that the home disaster cleanup has subsided a bit i've had a chance to enjoy my iPhone and let me echo the sentiments of all before me...WOW. I agree with db that there are other devices that do the things the iPhone does, but not with the beauty that this thing does them. It's kind of like saying a PC can do everything a mac can, but i don't think anyone would argue that a mac does them in a more visually friendly way. It's the same here.

I won't rehash all the cool things i've played with, as they were covered ad nauseum already, but one cool thing i found today. I was using a Belkin car charger for my video iPod and have my car set up where i can play my tunes through the car stereo. Problem is the iPhone didn't work out of the box with the wire so i needed to pick up the headphone extension wire. Did that today and all was fine before i left the parking lot. Now here's the cool part. As i was listening to the music on the iPhone in the car i started wondering, if a call came in could i answer it and hear the caller through my car speakers. Well, low and behold the wife called and i hit "answer", music faded out, i left the phone down on my armrest, said hello, and damn if her voice didn't come right through the speakers. My kids were in the back seat and could hear mommy, when they talked mommy could hear them, and i was driving hands free while talking as well. As soon as she hung up, the song picked right up where it left off. Pretty sweet.

Very cool but you bring up a very sore point for me...why isnt the iphone able to use car adaptors for audio??? I have ipod connections in both my cars that use the charging port for audio out and the iphone won' t work with either of them. It charges fine but no audio!?!?

This thing really does rock...it doesn't seem to be compatible with many existing IPod accessories (IHome or IMuffs, which are hit or miss), but that's really my only complaint. Well, that and it doesn't hold 80 GB of media like my IPod does. Other than that, love it.
