Microsoft extends RROD Warranty to 3 years !

Post by Rodster »

The news just broke from Microsoft. I must say i'm impressed. :)

Open Letter From Peter Moore

To our Xbox Community:

You've spoken, and we’ve heard you. Good service and a good customer experience are areas of the business that we care deeply about. And frankly, we've not been doing a good enough job.

Some of you have expressed frustration with the customer experiences you have had with Xbox 360; frustration with having to return your console for service after receiving the general hardware error message on the console.

The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have had a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. But when anyone questions the reliability of our product, or our commitment to our customers, it's something I take very seriously.

We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console.

We are also implementing some important policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free.

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.

If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.

This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I've posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we'll update it over the next few days.

I want to thank you, on behalf of all us at Microsoft, for your loyalty.

But realize, this warranty is just good customer service, not because there's any sort of widespread problem with the lights of death.

And no, I'm not getting one. I'd rather spend $250 on a Logitech G25 wheel. :)

Still, this is good news for those who own the system. I'm very happy for you cats, especially for those who have endured trouble.

Take care,
PK

To extend the warranty like this means to me they have Identified and eliminated the problem. Which makes sense, since I have yet to find anyone who has had an issue with the Elite.

Either way, its a good deal I just informed a few friends about this who all paid to have theirs fixed with this issue.

My 360 is long since gone via ebay, and I'm happily in the PS3 camp now. Still, I applaud Microsoft for FINALLY taking this measure. I now believe they can win this generation of the console wars. Based on my experiences, and a sampling of opinions around the web, I think the trend was heading in Sony's direction thanks to the 360's miserable reliability; this will no doubt help prevent that exodus. Still, the PS3 is a better overall piece of hardware, and MLB alone is worth the price of admission. Microsoft can now play the Xbox Live card without lousy reliability deflating their argument.

MLB is a 700 dollar game? Wow...that's one badass game.

Oh on second thought...it turns out to only be $600 with the price drop on the 15th.

Kudos to everyone who raised their voice to this as an issue. I had mentally prepared myself to drop the console when mine died, and had cut down on purchases accordingly.

Microsoft had to take the hit here, as it would have been far worse if they allowed this to go on any longer.

About time, although I agree that they should expand it to include all hardware as this thing has all the build quality of a Yugo.

Still sticking with the PS3 as my primary platform, although this will help ease some of the pain from having to get NCAA for the 'box due to EA's 30 fps programming sloppiness on the PS3.

Now if they would just support the Logitech wheels I might take a harder look.

Very long overdue by MS, but a nice and intelligent move.

I do think the 360 is the overall better console, but until the failure rate drops I just can't recommend one. Yes, the extended warranty is great, but have they seriously corrected the problem? It's still a major inconveinence to be without a console for 2-4 weeks.

Exactly. I saw some vague references to "improvements to the console" in the CNN story. And what exactly are those improvements? When will the new models roll out to stores? Will they be covered the three-year warranty, too?

Otherwise, this reads to me as, "We know our console is engineered like a pile of sh*t, but we'll pay for that pile of sh*t for three years. Feel like buying one?"

This also opens a Pandora's box for future warranties. Will all future Xbox consoles have three-year warranties?

Remember, Hyundai first offered 100,000-mile warranties on its cars because Americans were skeptical about the shoddy build quality of Korean cars. Now that Hyundai builds a damn solid car, the company still offers 100,000-mile warranties.

If the legacy of this episode is that the Xbox 720 and Xbox 1080 have three-year warranties from launch day until the last one rolls off the line, then this fiasco will be worth it.

Take care,
PK

I really feel they know what's causing the RROD failures. Implementing a design fix will take sometime. The two biggest culprits are the X-Clamp coming loose and the solder joints on the motherboard also coming loose.

I've read that MS has gone with a new designed heatsink. That's step number 1. Now they need to implement into the production of the system a new solder technique when assembling the motherboard.

I think they'll get it will take time. No doubt the 3 year warranty helps people like me who's on a trouble free launch unit.

That is probably subjective. Can you give me other 'major inconveniences' so I can understand that statement?

Are you kidding yourself? This is the most laughable post I've read in awhile.

It's no secret the ps3 has a terrible lineup of games and it's not getting any better in the near distant future.

I don't care which system wins what, but it's obvious which system is the best gaming system. It's not even close.

I was happy to hear this (duh). I've yet to have issues, but it's nice knowing I have 3 years "just in case".

As far as new motherboards & improved hardware, M$ will never officially announce anything. The last thing they want is newcomers "waiting until August-whatever" for the "new" 360's to hit the stores. I'd be curious to see what fixes are being done to 360's in this "new era"...

I couldn't be happier about this.

Honestly, the XBL experience and the game library are so superior to the competition at this point. I'm glad that I can enjoy those things without fretting about having to eventually pay for a repair.

I don't want to let MS off easy for manufacturing a shitty box, but fact of the matter is that the box is only one element of the experience. The online interface and the games are so stellar that they make up for the flaws in the hardware.

"Major" is a bit too strong. Thought about that after posting. But it is an inconveinence knowing that most likely you're 360 will be sent out for who knows how long.

Erectile dysfunction is a major inconveinence...in my opinion.

I will agree with Sport73 on one thing. MLB The Show is the best playing sports video game of this next gen era. It's that good.
