The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Moderators: Bill_Abner, ScoopBrady
I spent a few minutes with the phone portion today. So I'm going to talk about reception and voice things.
Visual Voicemail - why did apple have to invent this? It's so simple but amazing. Want to skip the voice message from your boss and go straight to your friends or gf...very nice.
Phone reception - Phones are different and so is reception. I was going to say that the iPhone signal is weaker than other services. I don't know that for sure. I might live in an area with a weaker signal than verizon. I don't have to stand on a chair with tin foil but it seems little weaker.
Phone voice quality - No real difference that I can tell. I'm comparing this to Verizon. One thing that already bothers we is how weak the sound is from the earpeice not the headphones. I had it up all the way driving with the window down and while I could hear it was not as loud as it should be. (I don't drive and talk all that often but I wanted to confirm the low volume from the phone itself).
Sound for iTunes - I've been spoiled have the Bose OE headphones. The iPhone is a little "tinny" on high sounds and misses on low bass sounds.
My Bose OE DOES NOT work with the iPhone. I just use this big headphones at home so it's not that big of an issue for me. But it seems some headphones are there will not work with the iPhone. It's not a software issue it is due to the male/female connector.
Other notes - no car adapter yet.
When I went back to the ATT store for a car adapter, they thought I was there to activate. So this must be a HUGE problem.
Any questions just ask. I think we have 3 iPhone DSP'ers.

The voice quality is one of my favorite things so far; when you use the included headphones the voice comes through both speakers; it's like a stereo phone call and makes it feel like you're in the room with them. I've done most of my browsing on the iPhone since I got it; and it's just about as good as using a full-size Mac. Expect more iposts now that I can write from anywhere.

Okay...I was VERY frustrated with the activation portion. Started through iTunes at 11:30pm Friday night and did not get activated until 6:00pm the following day. I was out when it got activated and I told my fiance that if it was not activated when I got home, I was returning it! Good thing it was activated because the thing is just insanely cool!
I was feeling a bit of buyers remorse until I spent about 15 minutes with the thing yesterday.
Things that are absolutely awesome:
- The integration from ALL of the apps to each other. I though my iMac had cool integration between stuff like iMovie, iTunes, etc... But the iPhone has it beat, big time! The way all the pictures, maps, YouTube stuff integrates with e-mail and contacts and info is AMAZING!
- The web browsing is insanely cool. So responsive and easy to navigate.
- The touch screen is mind blowing, really! It is SO accurate.
- The interface is stunning and incredibly intuitive.
- Size, weight and construction are top notch. Super slick and sleek yet seems VERY durable.
Thing that are not so awesome:
- Voice volume when using the phone. Could be a tad louder. It's actually not that it isn't loud enough, it just feels like I may want it to go louder or may run out of volume in certain situations.
- Integrated speaker for speakerphone could be better.
- No customizable ring tones (as far as I can tell). I am sure this will be a future feature but nothing as of yet I think. I can figure out how to add any from the internet or anything. I thought we were going to be able to customize iTunes tracks for ringer!?! I swear I read that somewhere!?!?
So far this thing has truly exceeded my expectations and is a true work of art.
Let me know if anyone has any specific questions I can answer...[/b]

glad you got activated Spooky; it would've been a shame to give in before getting to experience this amazing little device. Hopefully they enable landscape typing in email soon, because I'm darn near perfect and faster than my blakberry in landscape.
I know the hype; I know the expectations were lofty, and I know I'm the resident Apple nut, but I defy anyone to use this thing for a da and not classify it as a "game-changer".

Ya this is a gamechanger. You see that the moment you do phone stuff with it. It's not perfect but due to the design of it, they could change that easily.

I don't know what you mean by video reception. Video quality is pretty darn good.10spro wrote:Did any of you play any movies yet? How's the video reception? I am curious to know for a typical business traveller like myself, if I use it to surf the net a bit, listen to some MP3's, watch a quick flick, making calls, how good or bad is the battery in dealing with mutliple tasks.
The battery life is also really good. You should be able to do all of that and get home. You might have to recharge that night however

Well for the last day this thing felt like a really expensive iPod. I haven't taken down my Verizon service yet and I have one month left to go and there's no chance I'm going to pay $175.
Tonight I finally figured out how to have my calls on verizon forwarded.
Anyway here's a couple other things this little device does that I love.
Syncretization. This would have been a huge let down if they didn't have it like the BB. Since there's no push technology, the only time you have true sync is after you dock it. This means if you edit all your contacts on your PC, you have to sync with the iPhone to have those updated. Maybe in the future we'll see BB type sync'ing. Still since I have begun doing everything on my mac, this is a huge thing in my book.
This was a missing feature on non-business phones but a key feature in business phones. It's finally made the crossover.
Ease of use - Apple is reknown for this but they have done it again. There are a few niggling items that I would like to see cleaned up. But the use of the phone is just easy. For instance, let's say you want to email a friend. If you have that contact in your addy book, you just select the person and his email. Same with phone numbers. Not a huge idea but so easy and simple.
On the flip side, the iTunes syncing needs updates. I don't like how they set-up managing songs, pics, movies etc. You have to have what ever you want to sync on your PC/Mac and selected to sync. So I had to create special playlist for iTunes and iPhoto. No real way of just dragging and dropping into the iPhone. So let's say you wanted to put a movie on the iPhone and then deleted from your HD. If you sync and forgot to deselect sync'ing that portion it would delete it from your iPhone.
Quicktime is great. Anything on the web that uses QT is displayed in Safari. If you go to the Apple Trailers site it will so those in very good quality. Most of the Apple even has special pages for the iPhone atleast that it's displayed in the address bar. QT will stream podcasts as well.
One other random thing, iTunes is louder for some reason. I have gone back over my library and tried to get higher quality of music but it still seems louder.

A few new things...
- The keyboard is absolutely NO problem for me. As easy to use as my BB. No question. Can't believe people really made a big deal out of the keyboard.
- Here is something cool (not sure if other devices do this) but I was browsing the web for contact info for a company and when I got to their phone number listing, the iPhones Safari browser had it highlighted to be able to click on. Once I clicked on it, it asked "Call?". Say yes and it starts dialing the #. Very cool!
- Not sure why, but when I plug the iPhone into my car iPod adaptor I cannot get the sound to go out of the bottom connector, just the iPhone speaker. Weird!?!?

Spooky I heard there were compatibility problems with a lot of iPod accessories. None of the FM transmitters seem to work.
Apple didn't provide access to iphones before launch so the accessory makers have to work on compatibility issues. But it's not clear if these accesories can be firmware-updated.

Does anyone find the sound from the phone to be a little too quiet. Not the speakers in the bottom but from the speaker on the top of the phone. I can hear fine if there's not a lot of noise but in a car it sounds really quiet.

Yep. It isn't that it is too quiet rather than it feeling like it won't get loud enough if I need to really turn it up. Does that make sense?JRod wrote:Does anyone find the sound from the phone to be a little too quiet. Not the speakers in the bottom but from the speaker on the top of the phone. I'm not thrilled about the external speaker either (for speakerphone or watching videos without headphones, etc...).
Other than those...I am still floored by how incredible this thing is. There isn't too much that is revolutionary about it aside from the touch screen aspect, but the integration of it all and the intuitiveness is unmatched.

Apple definitely knows UIs...they are unparalleled in that aspect.Spooky wrote:Other than those...I am still floored by how incredible this thing is. Quick question that sort of deals with the iPhone...
I recently (4 days ago) purchased a new Treo680 from my local ATT Store. No problems with it but I have been VERY intrigued with the positive responses to the iPhone. My question is, and it may be a stupid one, but - Do you think ATT would allow me to return the Treo for an iPhone? They would be selling me a more expensive piece of equipment so its not like I would be fleecing them. Just wondering. Feel free to call me an idiot

You have 30 days to return any equipment you purchase for a full refund (minus airtime and data usages). If you're just swapping it out for a new phone, they will just credit you back and charge you for the new one. Look on your receipt man...it says the same thing.Diablo25 wrote:Quick question that sort of deals with the iPhone...

But be sure you would keep the iPhone.
I hear iPhone has a 14-day return policy with 10% restocking and no corporate account discounts for iPhone plan s.
You're talking about minimum $2100 for 2-years with the 8GB. However, Engadget has a chart showing that compared to Treos and Blackberries, the 2-year total cost is not much higher, if at all.

You should have no problem. But they might not have an iPhone.Diablo25 wrote:Quick question that sort of deals with the iPhone...

Very true DB. I just talked to my ATT store and they said no problem as long as its within 30 days. They had 4 GB in stock but no 8 GB which is what I would want. They told me to call every few days to check on the 8 GBdbdynsty25 wrote:You have 30 days to return any equipment you purchase for a full refund (minus airtime and data usages).
