There are going to be a lot of people who are going to love this game no matter how featureless it is because it's not Madden. Only a few I can think of here, but many at OS.

I could list the guys off in my mind who would be justifying things after these impressions and they have already started.

You can literally go look in the madden threads and these guys are saying that Madden is still s*** because they are just now implementing game play features we have wanted and they still won't buy the game because of lack of presentation.

Then when they get the bad news on APF presentation they say well you just skip that stuff anyway. It's comical.

Having said that, I am pretty disappointed. I was really looking forward to this game, I've decided to keep my pre-order and give it a fair shake. But this is a big let down for me. I was expecting something that would really knock my socks off, I'm getting a striped down 2k5 with legends.
I can certainly respect that position, and I don't want to come off sounding like a 2K apologist- I played and enjoyed both Madden and 2K on the Xbox, and I'm very excited about Madden this year. That said, I'm really not troubled by the things that aren't in the game. I never use franchise mode for any sports title, and I rarely even play season modes. I play online and I play exhibition games, so the key elements for me are the quality of the game engine and the quality of the online interface.

It took scrolling through about 100 comments to get to it, but I thought the most significant comment aholbert made was that based on the gameplay, this would be his #1 upcoming football title if it had an NFL license. That's the rub, and I'm not totally sure how it's going to come together with the legends teams (I'm particularly worried about certain legends being overpowered to the point where everyone constructs their team in more or less the same way). But I'm willing to give it a go.

I didn't mean I was talking about you with my statement. Also he did say that he would choose it gameplay wise. But he also said he was basing that on not having played madden or ncaa 08. Not like they will have new engines or anything, I'm just saying he is basing it on preference.

I think something else he said is whats bothering me, its a good game but a rental for him as there is not enough value for $60. I'm in that boat, don't play online much, don't care for online leagues as I think they are over rated.

What would have saved it for me is the ability to create multiple user teams on the same system and have a multiplayer league, but unless I read it wrong you can't do that either.

The only reason why this is worth the price tag for me is IMO 2k's engine is so much better than anything else out there. So if they simply took 2k5 sharpened up the graphics and fixed all the bugs in the gameplay (secondary play, etc) and added a lot of new animations, added a few new tweaks to improve the gameplay and improve the computer's AI...that and because I like to play on-line... I will be playing this game until there is a new one. Not only is this worth the price for me I will also be buying a 360 next month for this and Halo 3.

I'm actually excited about legends in a football game. If they are able to pull of this new attribute thing, I think that's a step in the right direction.

One of the things I've always to play but wasn't able to is the Classico patch for WE 11. Someone replaced every single national and international team with classics. I think APF, if they get legends right will be that fun. And for a season mode, I'm ok if it doesn't have one because the replayability will be drafting a team and playing with those legends.

But one negative and I'm just reading into this, I don't think there's going to be the options to create-a-legend like we wanted to. It just doesn't sound like the make-up of the season mode is going to allow for users to input all their legends. If the season mode only allows a quota for gold, silver, bronze legends, then I don't think created players would fit into that.

APF would be smart to allow the user any option of customizing possible.

You'll always have the 2k vs EA crap, I just want a good game of football... I could care less who makes it... but I'm sorry, no franchise really kills my hope for 2k8.

Exactly. I think the gameplay itself sounds pretty good, but the amount of stuff they cut out is just ridiculous at full price. I could even live without the franchise, but the lack of 32 teams and full customization options is just crap. No online fantasy draft is especially disappointing as that would been really cool.

This game had a lot of promise by being free of the NFL license, and the only area where it sound like they took real advantage of that freedom was stadium design. Disappointing.

Ya, it seems the APF is still trying to appease the NFL, so they can get the lincense back in a few years. Who knows if that will happen. And they've done in in spite of what the community wants. The are trying to please the NFL before their customers.

I know that is what they are saying, but I'm not believing that is the issue. Take Two is in really bad situation, there is no gurnatee they will even exist when the license expires and there is no gurantee the NFL will even open it up again.

People claimed for years that once the DTV deal was up that would be opened to more places and it wasn't.

They closed thier NY office, rumors are they are going to sell. The top two interested parties are UbiSoft and EA. I'd wager I have a better chance of winning the lotto then they do of getting the license back, at least in their current form as a company.

It could also be they are making this game to make the company look good before it's bought out.

Also MS just paid $50 million to Take-Two for TWO dl content for GTA 4.

They could be putting in carpet and nice coat of paint before they sell the house.

If GTA4 sells 10 million units, TakeTwo probably won't be in trouble.

I think the buyout talk is private equity vultures circling around because Take Two hasn't had a megablockbuster hit since ... GTA:SA.

It would be too bad if they were sold though. Besides GTA and the VC games, you have underappreciated games like Bully.

I just heard on NPR that Manhunter 2 is banned in Britain and Ireland and it's not coming out until July. That is TakeTwo published as well, I think.

It would suck if their renegade mentality was sucked up by EA or Ubisoft, which isn't as bad but you never know what happens if the culture changes due to a buyout.

Manhunt 2's looking at an AO rating here in the states, which means Wal*Mart, Target, and Best Buy probably won't stock it. My guess is that revenue's already accounted for in their forecast and that will be a major hit to the company. The whole thing seems to show incredibly irresponsible behavior by both T2 and R*, especially considering the company's current state.

But that cool $50 mil from MS for exclusive downloadable GTA content definitely helps.

Back to the topic at hand, I think APF needs to show a positive ROI this year for there to be a chance for a sequel. IMO, that's the main reason there isn't a version planned for next year.

I think Sony was stupid with some of their games. God of War 2 should have been a PS3 title. They should have forked over the cash so Bully was as a PS3 exclusive. Bully is way underrated and probably because the PS2 hype was did at that point. Sales and hype are two different things.

What was this thread about? Something about Tarantino. I still hate him. 8O

APF is the only football game I'm looking forward to. I like watching the NFL, but it's boring for me to play. Nothing to do in between sundays. NCAA, I had a lot of fun with both versions. NCAA XB was the best version of football I have every played. It was the WE of football games in my opinion.

If you didn't play NCAA XB or PS2, pick it up and give it a month. It will put you in the mood for july.

I very excited about this game after the Game spot show.

The animations are incredible
Living sidelines are cool but frankly I don't care as much about this. YMMV
Player Models still look like crap to me. Again purely an opinion.
I am still a little worried about the DB AI.

But I no longer have a bad feeling about having this on order, look forward to putting together teams and going at it against friends.

Thanks for the Gamespot link. I'm still very excited for this game (and NCAA and Madden football football football!!!!11!1!!) but the db AI concerns me and while the animations are nice the transitions between some of the tackling animations are horrible.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

The game was being played on rookie (you can tell from the fact that the kickoff arrow doesn't move), so I'm not that worried about the DB AI. Supposedly it was one of the major points of emphasis, and in the gameplay impressions that have been posted, no one has mentioned any DB issues.

Some minor things of note-

-The interplay between the OL and DL is top notch. In particular, you can see that tackles drop back correctly and form pockets, and that DE's rush upfield the way they are supposed to. In the last Elway throw, there was a clear lane to step up into, even though the player didn't do so.

-The run blocking also looks to have been addressed, as you can see the linemen firing off and getting upfield. They were pretty much wiping the floor with the defense, but again, it was on rookie, which always skews towards the offense.

-Rice showed good sideline awareness on the corner route, tapping his toes to make sure he was inbounds. I'm curious to see if the game will take a similar approach to Madden and have awareness be a major factor in whether or not players get their feet down in bounds.

-After having long been in the lead, it looks like 2K's gang tackles are going to pale in comparison to Madden. They looked very rudimentary. On the other hand, the tackles weren't as over-the-top as most of the Madden preview tackles have been.

-The 2K5 presentation looks to be largely intact, albeit without the ESPN look. You can actually see it better in the gameplay videos that Gamespot posted, as you have individual players singled out for replays.

-On a slightly different note...I loved the black uniforms with the iron cross helmets in the Rice commercial. I haven't seen those before, but they looked really tight. I'm also a big fan of the Legends blue jerseys with the gray shoulder bars. I guess I'm getting more and more accustomed to the non-NFL look of most of the teams.
