PS3 Impressions Yes Another One....

That sounds tedious, copying files form iPod one by one.

If you want to play your iPod library on the stereo system or the receiver connected to your TV and PS3, better to get a dock with audio/video outs.

The best way would be streaming the library you already have on your computer but some DLNA implementations work better with the PS3 than others.

Sounds like X360 has a better idea, to stream tracks off the iPod when you hook it up via the USB.

Sony makes an iPod dock for their Bravias so that could be another possibility. The key is, they parse the iPod database and display not just songs but playlists, lyrics, album art.

Blockbusters in Los Angeles have been stocking both HD-DVD and Blue-Ray for quite some time now, but that's Los Angeles, home of the film industry.

I've been thinking about taking the PS3 plunge. What cables have you guys been using,since the unit ships with composite cables(nice logic there

). Is there a notable difference between the HDMI and component cables? And do they make a VGA cable?

Just upgraded from component to HDMI yesterday. I wasn't expecting to be able to notice a difference on my Sammy 40" LCD (1080i), but I did. Picture is much more "crisp."

The real reason I upgraded was to get rid of the EMI "waves" I was getting on my screen with the component cable I had (a leftover from my PS2)... I'm happy to report that the HDMI cable I chose doesn't have this interfernce so I'm a happy camper...

Get your HDMI cables online. Just about every store, at least around here, have HDMI cables starting at $60.

You should be able to get a 6-foot HDMI cable for about $15 shipped.

If you are not plugging in that HDMI to a receiver which takes HDMI audio, then you would have to use the composite cable it comes with for left and right stereo. Or you'd need to buy a new PS2 cable with optical audio.

Reason to get HDMI now, instead of component (HDMI should actually cost less to make) is so you don't have issues with Blu-Ray playback if some movies start requiring HDCP connections (copy protection).

I have had great luck with monoprice.com - they have very nice HDMI six inch cables for under $15.50 (plus shipping). I do not have a link in front of me, but the cable should be fairly easy to locate.

Netflix has had them for a while...both BR and HD.

Yeah, I just joined Netflix for the first time and was amazed when my movie arrived after 1 mailing day! The $4.99 plan is perfect for me.

Not bad, being able to do 2 makes it more useful than an iPod chargers or plugging it into your computer.

The Hori thing apparently doesn't have its own power source. You just run the USB cable to the cradle. So never mind.

Thanks for the tip Leebo. I don't watch nearly as many movies that I used to since becoming a father 4 years ago but for $5 even if I watch one per month that's a deal.

I'm now a PS3 owner.

Anybody have any recommendations for HDMI cables. I will not pay 100 for cables. I saw some for 30 at Target I might pick up.

Anyone up for some online play in MotoStorm, MLB or even F1?

Amazon has a 2-meter one for $15-16 shipped.

They have some other ones for as low as $4 from a Marketplace seller but they charge about $10 for shipping.

I picked up a HDMI cable at Fry's for $34.99. They also had a MadCatz version for $29.99 and a Monster version for $99!!! I forget the brand name, it was pretty generic...

I'd be up for some MLB sometime, it's just been kinda laggy every time I've tried it online...

Whoa. I didn't believe that this could look better than the 360.

I'm going to pull a PK and say I'm dead wrong. Dead dead dead wrong. The 1080 p kills anything on the 360.

Does the 360 "black" output in 1080 p or does it just offer HDMI.

It's like the difference between the xbox and PS2 except this time it's reversed.

Sony really f'd up this launch didn't they? They clearly have a good product and just completely boned up the marketing, the price, the games practically everying.

I ordered the same one Javi did from Monoprice. Those $6 cables will offer the same picture quality as ones you'd pay $100 for in the store.

What games are you playing in 1080p? Most PS3 games are shipping with 720p as a maximum. There are not many 1080p games and I played GTHD demo in 1080p when I had a PS3 and I cannot say there is that much difference if any.

The games seem crisper than the 360. I know absolutely nothing about A/V things so maybe it has to do with the HDMI and not the PS3.

Clearly the GT looks better than Forza. Forza isn't bad to look at but I can seen a distinct difference. I have the Samsung "360" TV. It's the 23 incher that every 360 kiosk has.

I'm impressed with the display from the PS3.

The back of the box of each game should tell you if they are 1080p or 720p. When I had a PS3, I had TW07 and the maximum resolution supported was 720p.

1080p is crisper than 720p, no doubt.

I have heard that GT does look better than Forza in some cases, depending on individual user perception. That and GT is rendered at 1080p, it should look crisper than Forza (not sure what Forza renders in as I don't have the game).

I was impressed with the PS3 in the time I had it, but back in January of this year, there were no games I wanted to play on PS3 and they did not have NHL07 which I have played religiously since February. When one of my 360's dies, I will exchange it at CompUSA using the TAP program for a PS3....that way I will have the best of both worlds. Congrats on the PS3 purchase...I believe the games will eventually make the purchase very satisfying...

First of all, you need a 1080p TV in order to see 1080p.

Secondly, 1080p could be rendered by the game or rendered at 720p but upscaled by the console (which is what X360 does) or by the HDTV. Or both.

Upscaling may or may not be as good as rendering. Ultimate goal is rendering but these consoles may not have the horsepower to render at 1080p and get good lighting, texturing and filtering effects at the higher resolution. Or get as high a frame rate.

Then if you have a game rendered at 1080p but you only have a 720p display, the console and/or the HDTV will downscale to the lower resolution, which has less than half the pixels.

However, when you downscale, you get super sampling anti-aliasing for free. You lose some detail or pixels of course.

Next generation will be better for 1080p rendering. Plus more and more 1080p displays are coming out, surprisingly affordable. Ideally, you get 1080p rendering, output and then the display allows 1:1 pixel mapping.
