The Show "MLB 07" Thread

Again, it seems like it plays like the ps2 version, so most everyone here that has the ps3 and the game should like it... but it's also a bit disappointing that SOMETHING isn't new and exciting. I get the feeling that both reviewers felt like, "ya, I've been here before".Diablo25 wrote:The 1UP review is comical. Initial impressions over at OS are VERY favorable.
It's OS, the one guy over there FF has "MLB The Show" for his avatar for pete's sake. Again, it's OS were talking about here.
Don't you remember when MLB 2k7 first came out? Hell, I was engrossed by the visuals alone.

No offense but maybe that's because you want to take his word.Diablo25 wrote:I see where you are coming from Mizzourah but I'll take the word of a guy referencing High Heat over the bozos at IGN and 1UP. I'll be the judge jury and executioner (if necessary) tomorrow
People rag the reviewers for not putting enough time in. But the guy claiming it's like High Heat played for maybe 2 days and people are ready to take his word.
If reviews continue to come in like this well then, if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck....

I'm not saying that people can't/won't enjoy the game, but I think expectations should be low. I'd be very surprised if this game is a "system seller." Maybe next year.
Maybe 989 Sports pooches another good franchise like they did with GameDay on the PS2. I know, it's a different team (are they still called 989 Sports?) but sports games don't have enough time to develop new engines or make radical changes between annual releases.
GameDay reportedly made maybe minor improvements over the life of the PS2.
But so far, it doesn't sound like the debacle that the first PS2 GameDay was.
I'm probably in the same camp (of wanting to take his word), but I will say that I've learned a helluva lot more from a few pages of impressions over at OS than I did from either of the reviews I've seen. Sure OS has some flakes, but the impressions I'm seeing are those from people who appreciate The Show for what it is...a great baseball game, and maybe the best ever. I'd much rather listen to what they have to say than the clowns from IGN or 1up.
and I'm really getting tired of the, "it plays like High Heat' cliche.
High Heat is soooo many years ago that for me, no game has a manage mode like HH did. I NEVER played one game with a joystick as far as High Heat is concerned and like the FPS series, it was great in its hayday, but it was very simplistic compared to the baseball games today.
Hell, I played more Tecmo Super Bowl than any iteration of Madden, but I don't compare games of today to it.
I just don't get it, someone mentions X game is like High Heat and all of a sudden that means it's the best baseball game ever?
Maybe I'm just expecting more from these "next gen" consoles.

I wouldn't say when I see a High Heat reference I think "Greatest Game Ever" but I do sit up in my seat a bit. That game changed my view of video games. It was, and always will be, the s*** to me. Would it match up with today's games - no way, but it was the absolute benchmark for sim baseball games for about three years.MizzouRah wrote:and I'm really getting tired of the, "it plays like High Heat' cliche.

Anyone who expects MLB 07 on the PS3 to be anything other than a dolled-up version of the PS2/PSP game is fooling themselves. All I want from this game is prettier graphics and the same gameplay. The graphics look better than the PS2 version (those stadiums are insane) and I'm expecting a carbon copy of the gameplay. If that's what it delivers I'll be happy.
I am a patient boy.

According to the IGN review, it's not a dolled up version of the PS2 version. It's taken a step back. It seems it pulled another WE.ScoopBrady wrote:Anyone who expects MLB 07 on the PS3 to be anything other than a dolled-up version of the PS2/PSP game is fooling themselves. I'm sorry, but I don't think Sony should get a free pass on the graphics. Only three different player models? Are you kidding me? Heck, Bases Loaded had more player models than this game. That's lazy on the developer's part. In addition, what's up with the generic faces? This is supposed to be next gen. Yes, the gameplay should be number one, but graphically, the player models are borderline generic. That's unacceptable for next gen IMO.
Regardless, I fully expect this game to look 10 times better next year. 2K was able to make a pretty nice upgrade at least in terms of graphics from last season.

Well, i'm not the best reviewer in the world so my apologies to those who want more, but after 2 games with this game all i can say is it kicks the ever loving cr** out of 2k7 in every area with the exception of textures.
Graphically this game is much better relative to it's PS2 counterpart (as you expect it would be) and to dan and others, the faces are NOT generic. Every Yankee and Red Sox player on the team either looks great or at worst, very very close. Body types leave a BIT to be desired in that the likes of Papi could be a bit heavier, but he's no Josh Beckett by any means.
The animations in this game are flat out unreal and spot on. Example 1): Jeter goes deep in the hole, leaps and throws to first and as he stares down his throw he does his high knee back up trot until the ball hits the first baseman's glove at which point he cooly walks back to his position. Very cool. Example 2) Big Papi steps to the dish. He digs his back foot hole, steps out, spits into his right hand and slaps his hands together before heading in to hit. Awesome.
Gameplay: Someone mentioned if it's a prettier game with a similar gameplay to what existed on the PS2 they would be happy. This is what you've got here. Hit variety, plenty of foul balls, comfortable fielding, easy to manage the roster, etc.
The scoreboards look fantastic, the crowd looks great, and while i've only played in Fenway and the Bronx, the stadiums look terrific.
If anyone has specific questions, feel free to post them.
Again, i'm no review expert so i may not be able to offer much. But if you want a better looking The Show with the strong gameplay then you won't be disappointed.

Just went home on my lunch and played the game. I was surprised at how crisp the game looks. The graphics are NOT weak - they just aren't. They are actually very crisp. Solid 60 FPS. I was pleasantly impressed. No choppiness at all. The crowd is damn impressive. Citizen's Bank Park is awesome. They even have the ivy starting to crawl up the batting eye in centerfield. I saw more new animations than I expected. The swing animations are plentiful. Alot of little things I noticed in the 5 innings I played. Subtle animations like the pitcher kicking mud off his spikes or the fact that Aaron Rowand's bat is loaded with pine tar up to the trademark - cool. As far as gameplay, I was not disappointed at all. Its very familiar to the PS2 version. Ball physics are better. Hit variety is still very impressive. So far so great. I only played 5 innings but it was all that I was hoping for and more. I won't jump the gun on crowning it the king. I want to spend some time with the game before I start heaping praise on the game. Its off to one hell of a start though. Extensive playing time later on tonight after work!

I agree with everything Rally said. I've only gotten an inning in with the game so far, but I've played enough 07 on PS2 to know this is going to be a great game. Looks great on a 61 1080p tv, too.
Edit: And they got my last name in, too! Looking forward to putting myself on the Cardinals tonight after work (hopefully I'll be the offensive spark they need...)

I can't wait to try a Manage Only game later with the "Press Box" camera. The crispness of the graphics will make it so much more enjoyable.
As far as franchise, evidently it (CPU never making trades, etc.) has been fixed on the PS3 version. I plan to test it tonight.

I agree 100% so far. I've been playing 07 on the PSP and so far I am super jazzed about the PS3 version. I've only played 2 full games but it is exactly what I was hoping for which is a high resolution, 60fps version of The Show. The textures could definitely stand to be improved but its not a let down since I expected as much. If they could get the graphics up to the level of the japanese baseball game PYS4 I wouldn't leave the house for a week. Hopefully 08 will work on that some.RallyMonkey wrote: Again, i'm no review expert so i may not be able to offer much. Are you able to run the game in 1080p? It says it is supported on the back of the box but 720p is as high as I can get it to go (which the game says is "optimal").GTHobbes wrote: Looks great on a 61 1080p tv, too.
