Cup Result

Ajax 2: 4 Inter

In their first match after closing out a championship season in the premiership, Ajax is eliminated from the DSP cup.

The first half started with neither team being able to establish much passing, but with a number of chances falling to Inter's forwards. Each time however, the Ajax defense was able to scramble and block the shot or force the forward to push it wide. Ajax also almost scored to take the lead on it's first shot, however Sneijder's shot from 25 yards hit the post.

Just when it looked as if the game would go to half scoreless, Rosales for Ajax found some rare daylight down the right wing. His cross would be just out of the reach of its intended target Huntelaar, however it fell right to Sneijder who was able to settle and score from 12 yards.

Despite trailing at the half, Inter came out screaming in the second half. After an attack down the left side in the opening minute, Adriano received the ball on the edge of the area. With one cut move he turned his marker Stam, and powerfully finished to the far post.

15 minutes later, Inter would extend their lead, on a very bizarre play. Ajax player Maduro stopped the ball, and attempted to switch wings with a lob pass. Somehow, with no one around him, Maduro blocked his own pass, deflecting the ball into open space behind the defense. Ibrahimovic was the first to the spot, and after carrying into the box, he deftly chipped the keeper.

The lead would be 3-1 on 71 minutes, when Ibrahimovic found space in between Ajax defenders near the edge of the area, and drove home a shot while holding off a sliding tackle from Heitinga.

Desperate for goals, Ajax threw 6 men forward, and after several blocked shots, but with Inter unsuccessfully able to clear, Roger found an opening in the box and scored from 10 yards.

In the final 10 minutes, Inter would deny Ajax any chance to possess the ball and build an attack, and Adriano delivered the final blow in the 89th minute, tapping home a low cross into an open net.

NO! Bad move. It was very nice for once to read two write-ups. It gave a much clearer view of the game itself.

Unfortunately I can't schedule a time with all the family members in town and no idea when I'd be available. If you see me online, it may be me or it may be one of the gaggle of kids that will be floating around my house. I will do everything I can to slot out the 30 minutes it takes to play a game, but I have no idea when that will be yet.

Aston Villa 5, Olympiakos 2

Konstantinou 8, 17

Baros 21, 60, 65, 84
Angel 71

Yellow Cards:
Pankos, some CB
Mellberg, Bouma

Olympiakos is dancing with relegation, after a second loss in a row to Aston Villa. Although Olympiakos begun the game with two quick strikes from Konstantinou, and although Villa quickly responded with an angled strike from Baros, Olympiakos held on to the lead. However, Olympiakos changes at remaining in the 1st division crumbled in a ten minute span, as Baros scored twice and Angel scored again, to take Villa up 4-2. Villa again scored to seal it, and to make survival difficult for the Greek squad

Match Report

Olympiakos 2 Aston Villa 5

SOG 16, 16
Tar 9, 12
FK 6, 3
CK 3, 5
Posses 46, 54

Olympiakos: Konstantinou 29', Babandiga 66'

Villa: Baros 4' 11' 48', Angel 73', Petrov 81'

Bookings:

Olympiakos: Pankos

Villa: Djemba Djemba, Mellberg

Aston Villa grabbed 3 valuable points from the hosts Olympiakos, as Milan Baros found the form that has eluded him up to this point in the season. The Czech striker led Villa right out the starting gate with an early strike set up by Petrov's lovely through ball. Moments later he struck again with a goal conjured solely through his individual effort.

The Greeks struck back quickly with Konstantinou heading home a Rivaldo corner, and at the half-hour mark a game that some thought would be a drab affair was brimming with pace and vitality.

Olympiakos complicated matters for itself shortly before half when a poor decision on a clearance saw one of the central defenders rocket a ball into his own net.

Baros' second goal on 48 minutes gave Villa some breathing room. The Czech dribbled the left back, cut into the box and launched a precise left-footed strike past the Greek keeper into the side netting from 15 yards.

Olympiakos continued to fight for its life though, and just moments later again landed a counterpunch. Rivaldo's sizzling service from yet another coner kick was clinically headed home by a dashing Babandiga.

Villa put the matter to rest in the later moments of the match. Angel lashed home a powerful 20 yard strike in the 73rd minute and created the final Villa goal in the 81st. His lofted diagonal ball found Bouma racing down the left flank. Bouma aggressively ran at defenders, carrying the ball to the intersection of the 6-yard box and the goal line. His sharp angled ball back to the center of the pitch was slammed home by Petrov for the final goal of the match.

Great games, Jared. Trying to win with that team is a thankless task but both matches had a lot of heat and action. I don't know what has gotten into Baros!

It's probably time for me to face up to the fact that I'm not going to get my games in. My sincere apologies to Zepp and everyone in the league, but unforseen schedule changes are making it nearly impossible for me to get online at a reasonable hour these days.

Therefore I would respectfully request forfeiture of the remainder of Barca's matches and ask that they might be reassigned next season.

Once again, my apologies and best of luck to everyone in the league.

CUP MATCH RESULT:

West Ham 5 Tottenham 4

Goals - Too many to count.
Yellow Cards - 1 (Bowyer)

West Ham edged out Tottenham in a 9 goal thriller that was undoubtedly one of the matches of the season. Any notions of a defensive match were blown out of the water with 4 goals in the first 30 minutes as both teams put on a masterclass in attacking football. Tottenham's attacking 4-3-3 formation broke with speed and power with Defoe and Keane the primary tormentors of the West Ham defense. On the other side of the ball, the Hammer's 3-5-2 formation had Tevez and Ashton at the heart of each attack.

West Ham went into the break with a 4-2 lead but within 15 minutes Tottenham were back level at 4-4. In the end it was a Dean Ashton goal with 20 minutes left to go that settled the match but Robbie Keane could so easily have sent the match into Extra Time as his last gasp volley went merely inches wide of Robert Green's post.

5-4 West Ham.

Great game Cloud! That was a helluva lot of fun. Good luck with the rest of your season!

Oh, and try and get some 4 player (2vs2) Winning Eleven - it's fantastic.

Jared's game reports:
Jared wrote:Final games of Season 9

Olympiakos 5, Tottenham 1

Olympiakos found the best time for their best game of the season, besting Tottenham in a offensive battle. The game started well for the Greek club, with Rivaldo scoring first and Djordevic volleying home a loose ball to take a 2-0 lead. In the second half, Berbatov dribbled through the porous Olympiakos defense to take to trim the advantage to 2-1. But then Olympiakos bounced back with headers by Rivaldo and Stoltidis, and a breakaway by Garcia. The 5th goal was crucial, in that it guaranteed that Olympiakos would only have to tie in their second match against Tottenham to stay up......

Goals:
Rivaldo 28'
Djordevic 38'
Berbatov (Defoe) 56'
Rivaldo (Garcia) 65'
Stoltidis (Rivaldo) 76'
Garcia (Rivaldo) 87'

Tottenham 6, Olympiakos 2

Olympiakos' hopes at staying up in the DSP Premiership were dashed as Tottenham blitzed the Greek defense to deny their hopes. The game started with three goals in the first fifteen minutes, two quick goals by Berbatov and Keane followed by a stunner by Rivaldo. With Tottenham up 2-1 came the most important two minutes of the match.

Babangida got through the defense on left wing with a two-on-one with Rivaldo. Tottenham correctly guessed that Babangida would pass, and intercepted a pass that would have surely led to the tying goal. Then Tottenham countered, and found Keane in the box. Ouadddou tried to slide to block a shot, but instead clumsily took down Keane and was shown the harsh red card. Keane finished the penalty, and then Tottenham scored on their next two shots to go up 5-1. Olympiakos fought to equalize, but was unable to attack efficiently with only 10 men.

Berbatov 5'
Keane 10'
Rivaldo (Zewlakow) 14'
RED: Ouaddou 24'
Keane (pen) 24'
Berbatov 28'
Keane 37'
Rivaldo (Djordevic) 46'
Davids 81'

Good games Cloud.

Attention League members from Season Nine:

Do you want to be part of Season Ten? We are having sign-ups in the 'Congratualtions to Naples, Ajax' thread for Season Ten. Season Nine players that want to continue with Season Ten, set to begin next Monday, need to sign up in that thread and indicate if they want to keep their team, or change it and if change it what tier they will be drawing from.

I understand some are having problems with their 360, but don't forget the typical league season takes 5 weeks to complete, so you can easily sign up and get your games played in the latter part of the season even if you don't have a working 360 right now. And don't forget, if you do sign up but can't end up playing any of your games, you wouldn't be the first one to sign up and never play!

Right now I've listed Slumberland and Cloud in the league, but I need to hear from those two. Players from other divisions that haven't posted in the 'Congrats/ Sign-Up' thread are not on the roster right now, so go ahead and post over there and let us all know what you are up to!

We'll resurrect this thread once the team selection process is complete and the schedule for the first half of Season Ten is ready to go.

Thanks!

WE League Cup

Fiorentina 1, Olympiakos 0

Fiorentina, on the back of some dubious refereeing, advanced to the semi-finals of the WE Cup with a 1-0 victory. The first half was a pretty even affair, with both teams having a few decent chances at goal. Near the end of the 1st half, Toni received the ball in the box and passed the ball through the box and to an Olympiakos defender. But instead of play continuing, the referee blew the whistle and pointed to the spot. Replays showed that Babangida slightly nudged Toni with his shoulder, but there was clearly no penalty. Amidst the howls of the forlorn Olympiakos fans, Toni finished his PK to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Olympiakos' offense began to find it's stride with many chances on goal. The defining moment was in the 75th minute, when Rivaldo found Stoltidis open in the box who slotted home what looked to be the game-tying goal. But the assistant's flag was up, and Stoltidis was called offside. Replays showed that Stoltidis was clearly even, but the score remained 1-0. Olympiakos had a few more chances, including a shot that clanged off the crossbar with a few minutes remaining. However, the equalizer was not to be found as Fiorentina advanced to the semis.

Great game Sully. Good luck in the rest of the cup.

Good game, Jared. Pure luck that I'm through. I've never seen the refs so bad. The foul resulting in the PK, and the offsides on your lone goal, both phantom calls.
