DSPremiership Result

AS Monaco FC 2 : 2 Olympiacos CFP

Monaco's nightmare season continued as they were able to claw their way back from an early 2-0 deficit to earn a share of the points from visiting Olympiacos, but the single point may not be enough to save the Monagasque side from the drop.

Olympiacos striker Djordjevic scored a brace in the very early going, with goals in the 5th and 10th minutes. The first was a wicked half-volley that came off a cross that the Monaco defense could not get a touch onto as it made its way all the way to the far post, where Djordjevic was waiting. The second was a similar ball, but this one was met in the air by the striker, who leaped over his marker to power it past Roma.

Grax pulled the home team back within one in minute 23 when he headed a nice cross from Meriem from about 8 yds in the center of the box past a helpless Olympiacos keeper. Meriem had done well to create some space towards the endline before chipping the delicate ball into the path of the young striker.

The second half was full of chances for both sides, and Monaco were lucky that the margin remained one goal after an open shot for the Greeks came off the base of the post. In minute 69, right winger Plasil was able to trap a cross into the box from left back Dos Santos that had evaded everyone else, and the Czech midfielder had the space to line up a nice shot with his left foot that gave the Greek keeper no chance and drew the score even. A few minutes later, Monaco defensive midfielder Gerard (moved to striker after the Monaco manager shuffled the deck, intending to sub in the blue-feeling Koller but somehow missing the right button) receieved a nice through ball into the box at the end of a nice fluid buildup through midfield, but his shot from 17 yds squarly hit the crossbar instead of finding the target. As time waned away, Olympiacos superstar Rivaldo found himself behind the defense right at the top of the box, but his strike off his preferred left foot sailed just wide of the near post.

Monaco sit with only 5 points off 7 matches, and with two games remaining against possible fellow relegation flirter Villa, and one against St. Cloud's Hotspur side, there's little doubt Monaco will be changed for a different team next season no matter whether they survive relegation or not.

Monaco 2 : 2 Olympiacos

Djordjevic (OLY) 5', 10'
Grax (MON) 23'
Plasil (MON) 69'

Shots 12 (9) : 9 (3)
Corners 0 : 0
Fouls 4 (4) : 2 (0)
Poss. 46 : 54

Kafes (OLY) - yellow card
no injuries

Great game, Jared. I really wanted those 3 points after you ROBBED me, yes ROBBED me in the first match! It certainly had plenty of action, and pelnty of poor defending, and it's amazing neither of us could find that winner.

Good luck the rest of the way!

Ajax 3:2 Olympiacos

Ajax held on to a perilous late lead, and bested Olympiacos 3-2.

Ajax got off to a dream start, finding their go-to guy Huntelaar in the box in the first minute of the game. Huntelaar slipped behind his marker, and powerfully headed home a cross from Rosales.

Ajax would get a chance to blow the game open about 10 minutes later when Huntelaar was brought down in the box, but Olympiacos keeper guessed correctly on the ensuing PK and Sneijder pushed it wide.

This opened the door for Olympiacos, who generated several chances in the box, but had trouble finding the target. Eventually Konstatinou die put one on frame, hitting the far post and crossing the line after rounding his marker.

After half, Ajax again immediately took the kickoff and connected with Huntelaar, pushing Ajax up 2-1 in the 46th minute. It would be 3-1 25 minutes later, with Huntelaar finishing his off his hat trick.

Rivaldo would however bring Olympiacos back into the game in the 78th minute, but Olympiacos couldn't find the equalizer in the final minutes, and the game ended 3-2.

In D2 action, C. Athletico came away with a 1-0 win against Real Madrid..
The game was controlled in the first half by Athletico, & even held the mighty RM's to no shots, either attempted or on target, on net.. However, the game remained 0-0 after the 1st half.

Fernando Torres scored in the '65 minute for the game's lone goal.. RM had several close chances in the half, but failed to turn one into a goal..

Monaco, Villa Meet In Cup, League Games

2nd Round Cup Result

AS Monaco FC 2 : 0 Aston Villa FC

Monaco hosted Villa in the 2nd round of the DSP WE League Season Nine Cup and took advantage of some agressive defending to come away with the 2-0 win thanks to two first half goals. The scoring started in minute 25, when big Jan Koller ran onto a short pass from Marco DiVaio and tapped it into the net. Soon after, Villa midfielder Petrov received his second yellow card of the match and was sent off. The Villa defenders were wildly agressive from the start, seemingly taking their frustrations with the game engine out on the innocent Monaco players. Besdies Petrov's two yellow cards, center back Mellberg also saw yellow in the first half. Monaco midfielder Leko also received a yellow card later in the match.

Just before halftime, in minute 41, DiVaio doubled the home side's lead. After the break, neither team could break through, and despite Villa calming down and creating some chances, Monaco did well to maintain posession and wear down the clock. Monaco now move on to the Quarter Finals of the Cup and await the results of the random draw which will determine their opponent.

League Result

AS Monaco FC 2 : 1 Aston Villa FC

Monaco hosted Villa in a league match, and thanks to a heroic miracle goal at the death by big striker Jan Koller were able to steal the full share of the points from a Villa side that deserved a share.

The scoring began in the 13th minute with Monaco midfielder Gerard becoming the beneficiary of a wild bounce and blasting a shot from 17 yds. The ball had spent seemingly forever in the air after a Monaco corner kick was popped up in the air, headed back towards the far post by big man Jan Koller, punched by the Villa keeper back towards midfield, and then headed back towards the box by a crashing Bernardi, only to be met simultaneously by the heads of Villa CB Mellberg and Gerard right at the top of the box. The ball finally came back to the ground, dropping straight down and right at the feet of Gerard, and Mellberg was in no position to trouble the sturdy DM's shot which was accurate and struck with plenty of pace to zip right past the beleaguered Villa keeper's ear and into the back of the net.

Before the half was done, Villa striker Milan Baros created a goal out of thin air, beating three defenders in succession with some wonderous dribbling and walking into the box to fire past a sprawling Roma. The teams went into the break tied at ones, and the second half was a tightly contested battle for the winner. Both sides created chances, neither side could score, and Monaco, desparate to earn their second league win of the season, began pushing more and more forward as time waned away. In the final ten minutes of the match, Monaco changed their formation to a more agressive one, and yet still could not find the final pass. As stoppage time wore away, Monaco earned a throw just inside the Villa half of the field. DiVaio received the throw and quickly switched the attack to midfielder Plasil, who trapped the ball and pushed a pass forward to big Jan Koller at the top of the box. The Czech giant had no trouble turning and striking a well taken shot that Villa's goalkeeper could not stop. It was the answer to many urgent prayers, and the big man's goal (team MVP in the previous season) may well be just enough to keep Monaco from the drop.

AS Monaco 2 : 1 Aston Villa

Gerard (MON) 13'
Baros (VIL) 37'
Koller (MON) 90'

Shots 11 (6) : 8 (1)
Corners 1 : 5
Fouls 1 (0) : 5 (2)
Poss. 51 : 49

Bookings: Baros (VIL) - Y
no injuries.

Amazing games, Rob, all three (in between the two above matches, we played the other league game at Villa). I had a huge advantage in the cup match until you came to your senses and settled down, but by then you were down a man. Even so, there were some tense moments in that one. We play so often and know each other's game so well, it is often the slimmest of differences of quality that will determine who wins out matches. That winner at the end by Koller is what makes this league so incredibly fun. I know it sucks (I've been on the other side plenty of times), but man I was desparate for the points and WOW but Koller is a superstar for me. It could not have been more dramatic, and I was so surprised as it played out I nearly screwed it up.

Good luck with the rest of your games. The relegation battle at this stage still invovles all four of us, and I have only one game left. It should be very tight right down to the end.

Match Report

Aston Villa 3 AS Monaco 2

SOG 10, 13
Tar 5, 7
FK 3, 1
Cor 3, 2
Posses 45, 55

Villa: Moore 14', Angel 29', 56'

Monaco: Koller 73', DiVaio 86'

No bookings

Villa rebounded from their earlier cup loss to Monaco to beat the French side at home in the league. It was a topsy-turvey affair, with the hosts dominating long stretches in the first half but watching the visitors come charging back late. Only Koller's poor form, goal notwithstanding, seemed to separate the teams.

Milan Baros was not match fit, but his replacement Moore opened the scoring in the early going. Emerging offensive threat FB Bouma beat his man down the left and floated in a cross. Juan Pablo Angel nodded the ball down for Moore, who drilled home the opener.

Monaco applied some pressure in response, but found themselves on their heels in the face of a quick counter-attack by Villa. Koller was dispossesed on the edge of the Villain area by questionable tackle by Mellberg. The defender cleared quickly, finding Gareth Barry who first-timed a pass to Moore, who drew out the keeper and defense before slotting the ball to a streaking Angel. Angel slammed the ball home to cap a lovely stretch of one-touch football that brought a very rare smile to the face of the Villa manager.

Aston Villa continued a rare stretch of quality play in the second half. Extended pressure yielded a CK to Bouma. The LB's pass found an unmarked Angel on the edge of the 6-yard box, and the veteran hammered home a powerful header to put the hosts up 3-0.

The French side did not dispair however, and tenaciously began winning more of the ball in midfield. Their pressure opened a chance for Jan Koller in the 73rd minute, as the big man was fed the ball on the edge of the area (or as Dave O'Brien would say "That box!"). The charging Czech turned his defender with remarkable dexterity for a man built like a sequoia and blasted in the first for the visitors.

Thirteen minutes later Koller was again involved, as he drew two defenders and passed deftly out of the challenges to a dashing DiVaio. DiVaio ran onto the perfectly-timed pass and slotted home the goal.

It was a tense affair down the stretch, with DiVaio narrowly heading wide at the death. The English were never comfortable until the whistle blew, but had three potentially valuable points when it finally did.

Zep,

Good games, indeed. I think that this game was a draw at best for me if Koller hadn't been blue. I think both games probably should've been draws, so it all worked out right in the end.

Actually, we each got that extra point compared to what we would have had if we had drawn both games, so I'm happy. Just go and beat Jared and Cloud! :)

Minor correction: it was Leko that was brutally thrown off the ball at the top of 'that box' which led to the very nice counter for your second goal. Koller wasn't in the game yet, with the blue arrow and all. It was one of those deal where the first touch, a turbo, beat Leko's closest defender, but the second man ran into Leko just enough to push him off, and the third man (it was Orson Welles the whole time!) stepped in and took posession. Damn ref.

:)

Oh, second correction: I did despair, indeed I was desparate for points in both games, and though moral victories mean nothing in the standings, I was surprised to make a game of it at the end. Man, but DiVaio came close right before the whislte there!

Really fun stuff!

AC Milan 2 vs. West Ham United 3

64' Tevez

8(3) Shots 16(7)

Yellow Cards: Reo-Coker

West Ham United ground out an incredibly close 3-2 victory at the San Siro today over AC Milan. With Ashton and Konchesky both out with the flu, and Tevez himself struggling (but still starting), Carlton Cole came into the attack for his first start of the season. Six minutes in and new boy Cole was celebrating his first goal of the season - a header from a Mullins cross.

The home side, however, were in no mood to repeat their defeat earlier in the season and stormed back with two wonderfully taken goals by Pippo Inzaghi. The first on 11' minutes, a cool finish following a brilliant Seedorf through-pass. Then in the 37th minute 'Super Pippo' gave Milan the lead following a fantastic individual run by Kaka.

Milan seemed to be heading into half-time with a lead but Cole struck again, this time a right-footed finish just inside the box on a partial breakaway.

The second half was a cagey affair settled only by a moment of Tevez brilliance in the 67th minute. Reo-Coker and Bowyer exchanged passes before the latter crossed in for Tevez to scissor-kick the ball past Dida.

AC Milan continued their pressure but West Ham held on for a slender one goal victory.

Great game HOGZ! That was damn close!

OK gang, a little reminder that the deadline for the completion of Season Nine is this Sunday, April 29. However, since we are also doing a Cup competition this season, and have yet to reach the Quarter Final round, I think we will need an extension of one week. We are awaiting the result of two 2nd Round Cup games before the draw for the QFs can be done to determine the QF matchups, and after that we still have 3 more rounds before the Cup is complete.

So, I am going to request an extension myself on behalf of the Cup. However, if all the league games are done by the end of Sunday night, we'll go ahead and start the congrats/ sign-up thread for Season Ten and the team selection process on Monday.

However, I somehow don't see that happening, and would prefer not to have people playing Cup games with a team they want to get rid of for the next season.

So, let's try to get the League games done ASAP, preferably this weekend, but we'll go ahead and add another week just for the heck of it.

If we don't have results posted from the two remaining 2nd Round Cup games by Monday AM, I think I'll have to do a coin toss to see who moves on from those matchups and do the QFs draw on Monday. Of course, I'll do the draw as soon as those games are done if that is sooner than Monday.

Match Report

Aston Villa 1 Tottenham Hotspur 3

SOG 7, 11
Tar 3, 4
FK 3, 3
CK 1, 2
Posses. 48, 52

Villa: Baros 79'

Tottenham: Berbatov 73' (PEN) 83', Keane 76'

No bookings or injuries

Floundering Villa dropped a key match at home to Tottenham 3-1, and are now staring relegation right in the face.

The match opened with an incredibly dominating stetch by the club fron London, as their pacey midfield completely overwhelmed the home side. Several excellent chances went begging due to fortune and the desparate work of Sorensen, the Villa keeper.

The hosts finally exhaled at the halftime whistle and adjourned to the locker room to regroup. They were somewhat successful in this effort, regaining a foothold in possession and creating some real chances for the first time.

The match was truly anyone's for the taking when a dubious penalty decision broke open the game, and with it the hearts of Villain supporters.

In the 73rd minute Berbatov got behind the Villa back line only to see CB Olof Mellberg recover and seemingly dispossess the forward with a timely tackle. The ref saw something else entirely and awarded a penalty for what seemed to be only the slightest contact. Berbatov was clinical from the spot and the game had its first goal. After the game, even Tottenham's manager reluctantly admitted that a the penalty award was harsh. But the damage was done.

Villa seemed to be well and truly stunned, and only moments after changing to a more offensive tactical posture saw a the visitors crush what remained of Villain hopes with a Robbie Keane strike just three minutes later.

Milan Baros gamely answered for the hosts, trying to drive on the beleaguered side. But it was too little too late. Spurs drove home the coup de grace in the 83rd minute, as Defoe chipped in a floating cross that Berbatov headed home for their third and final goal.

Cloud: Great game. I was just gutted by that penalty. I'd spent 70 minutes trying to contain your awesome forwards. Great job keeping the heat on after the goal. Good luck down the road.

I'm still here. Been a bit elusive as of late. I'm playing Met34 tonight and would still be interested in playing Crouch (thanks for your efforts to track me down, If memory serves me correct some of those nights were Graw / Forza or NHL league nights and I was committed)

Also looking to get in 2 with MacsomJrr and Coops and 1 with Crouch.
