OT: New Music?

Well said, I thought "Wide Awake" was his best, but nonetheless... I'm just praying he doesn't go down the Ryan Adams path of suckiness.

Ah, I'll beg to differ with you on that one, Gregg. I really like Ryan Adams, but he's too prolific. Strange problem, as most artists wait TOO long between albums, but Adams releases a lot of stuff that never should have left the basement tapes or is better suited for a B-sides record.

The release of three records in a year's span between 2005-06 was a prime example. "Cold Roses" was an excellent record, I thought "Jacksonville City Nights" was solid, and "29" sucked.

Adams' ego is too unchecked to keep some of this stuff off a platter for mass consumption. Too bad, because when he's on, I think he's very good. Much better than Conor Oberst, in fact.

I also really like Ryan Adams...though I didn't pick up either Jacksonville or 29 as Cold Roses was enough music from one artist to tide me over for the year. I am hearing really good things about the album he has coming out in June, and am sure I'll be picking it up.

Scoop..glad to hear you're digging the Kings of Leon cd. You can't go wrong with either their first or second record, though the first cut off the second record (called "Slow Night, So Long") is still one of my all time favorite rock songs.

Well Ryan Adams does have "Bob Pollard Disease" where he floods the market with sooo much stuff people start to wonder why they even bother, some's good (Heartbreaker, Cold Roses), some's boring (29, Love is Hell), and some's truly awful (Rock N Roll anyone?).

It's amazing how much people are split on the guy - some cry at his shows, others show-up just to heckle & throw sh*t at him him (which I've seen the later in-person before, he doesn't handle it well). Anyway, I was just trying to say he went from 'next big thing' status to 'a real head-scratcher'. A path Mr. Bright Eyes may be traveling one day...

I'll throw out another recommendation:
Self - "Gizmodgery"

This was released back in 2000 and is played entirely with children's toy instruments. Standout tracks include "Trunk Fulla Amps" and a cover of "What a Fool Believes".

Wow! Thanks for the reminder. I read about this a long time ago but could not find it. Now I found it...sounds interesting so far.

Anybody listen to LCD Soundsystem? Heard a song or two on Boombox, a very good Sirius Radio station, and thought it was pretty good.

Had a little techno/Cure/Prince sound working. Might have to check them out.

Also heard a group called Silversun Pickups. Sounded a lot like The Smashing Pumpkins but I believe with a female singer. A song called "Lazy Eye". Pretty good.

LCD's Sound of Silver is good record. There's really not a bad track on it, so if u liked what u heard, you'll probably dig the rest.

Silversun Pickups is from Silverlake, ca. I've seen them a few times (I live in LA). They's gotten much better over the years. The guitar work on the new record is cool as hell, but their singer (a guy sings most of the songs) doesn't really do it for me (esp live). They're label mates with some friends of mine, Dappled Cities. A much better band IMO. Their album is not out in the USA until june, but if u have any, cough, 'internet skills', you could probably find it somehow... ("Granddance").

Speaking of Sirius, I dig the 'left of center' channel. Esp when they have a theme night. Once night they did 6 hours of Smiths/Morrissey (including live bootlegs, raties, etc...). Good stuff you'd never ever hear on old FM...

Since somebody brought up Ryan Adams, the best Adams album of the year so far is Jesse Malin's "Glitter in the Gutter", although Ryan still has time to release five other albums worth of material before New Years.

Malin sounds like Adams might of if he had continued along the road between "Heartbreaker" and "Gold" instead of veering off toward Muskogee. Malin's songs mostly stay around power pop and anthems, with the occasional foray into rootsier territory. It's a very solid album throughout although it's a tough time for a singer songwriter to break.

LCD's song 'Someone Great' is perhaps my favourite of the album, and also 'New York, I love you but you're bringing me down' should be heard.

I'm obsessing over this African band Tinariwen. My local record store guy recommended their latest album, "Aman Iman: Water Is Life" and I can't stop listening to it. If you're at all familiar with Malinese legend Ali Farka Touré, TInariwen is similar in it's African blues style but they have something else going on as well. With multiple guitarists, vocalists and simple percussion they play a style of southern American blues mixed with the looping, trancey drones of North Africa. I have no idea what they're singing about (the lyrics are translated in the liner notes but I haven't read 'em) but it doesn't matter in the least - it is about the overall sound.

Thanks for the tip, E. You're right: This is a very compelling listen, as I'm checking out the songs available at the band's Web site.

I really enjoy African music, as the last Ali Farke Toure album was superb. I've also enjoyed the latest offering from Amadou and Miriam, and Konono No. 1's "Congotronics" is still one of the coolest records I've ever heard.

My new guilty pleasure that I never saw coming... Of Montreal's "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?" I thought they were always the most annoying of the Elephant 6 crew, but this album is fascinating. Who knew kevin barnes had it in him?

What is Elephant 6?

I like Of Montreal but get really bummed out when I hear them do the Outback Steakhouse commercial. It's one thing to sell your song to be used, but to change the words to and re-record it (I am assuming it is them singing it) with Outback lyrics is REALLY bad.

Here are some new bands/artists I have just gotten stuff by and am enjoying listening to:

Hella - Got about 4 or 5 differnt albums of theirs and just started sampling. They are like Don Caballero on cocaine.

Pelican - Sounds like Trams Am meets Explosions in the Sky

Rumah Sakit - A good Don Caballero rip-off

Andrew Bird - Rufus Wainwright meets M. Ward

Panda Bear- Beach Boys meet CAN

The Sadies - In Concert Vol 1.

Titan - Looks like they have only one album. AWESOME stuff. Like old Genesis meets Hawkwind meets Ween

Just for the record, that's not Of Montreal singing or playing the "outback version". They licensed the song. Why would they do that you may ask?? The singer (Barnes) had a kid last year. Baby needs some new shoes! After he played that gig naked that month in vegas, the edorsement deals may be slowin' down..

Speaking of E6 bands, Olivia Tremor Control is back to gether & playing a few shows this summer. Be on the lookout.

I dig the song, but the album wears on me. People look at me funny when I say Tago Mago would've been a better single than double album. I find it all too much, if that makes sense. Which is strange with all the other stuff I like, but such is life.

It's been almost a decade, hasn't it? Last I heard Mangum is happily exploring his art in non-musical ways - painting, sculpture, writing - and has no regrets. The disruption caused by obsessive fans probably turned him away from putting out more of his own music for good, unfortunately.

I don't know if anyone else watches the Henry Rollins show on IFC but Ryan Adams and the Cardinals was the musical guest this week and they put on a great performance. It was reminiscent of why I like the Mars Volta in concert. Unlike greggsand, I enjoy when artists really get into a song and jam on it, extending the duration of the song. Adams was allowed to do so on the Rollins show and it was fantastic. Ironically, the Mars Volta is the musical guest next week.

On a side note, Henry mentioned that Ryan Adams puts out music like it's a magazine subscription when introducing him.
