Well, it was dangerous hit regardless , one of those hits that can end a career or put you out for awhile with a sore neck like E. Cole last year.
The problem is that D. Gauthier has a reputation for being a dirty player and when a small chance comes up, players tend to do tic for tac. In other words the word respect is certainly missing these days.

In Junior's play today, when a player is faced against the board, the back of the jersey has a big STOP sign hopefully sending a message to the next guy who's coming at full speed to stop and make a wise decision.

You guys should see how many teams deliberately try to run into R. Luongo this year. Good thing he's a workhorse and a strong guy, but with D. Cloutier in the past, he would have been out for sure.

J. Johnson made his NHL debut last night for the Kings. Welcome kid, J. Bulis threw a hip check that sent him flying. But he's got a lot of potential, got good size and has a hard shot. Promising.

Regardless of who comes on top in the Western conference, I would't want to face the likes of CAL, MIN, SJ, DAl or even my 'Nucks if they don't win their division.

Naples39 wrote:I certainly agree with your larger point, but this Gauthier hit is much ado about nothing among Flyers fans if you ask me. I've seen it numerous times on TSN and I don't even think it was a penalty, let alone a suspension. Gauthier was being rightfully chased along the boards, and tried some spin move. Adams had every right to squish him rather than let him spin by.
You don't have a link to a video of the hit, do you? It looked bad live, but I haven't been able to see it again as it's not on youtube.

Go to tsn.ca, and click on anything that brings up their video application window (you might need to be registered, which is free). Once there, click on the hockey tab, and the Flyers-Canes highlights should be the 6th or 7th game down or so.

Is this the night that Vince Lecavalier will score his 50th goal? He's been squeezing the stick lately, maybe because his teams is still also fighting for a playoff spot. Vinny has had his chances but can't buy #50 lately.

Crucial game for the SC champs after back to back ugly losses, they look a bit rattle at this point. Goaltending has to improve also if they want to make it to the dance floor next week.

And on a backhand spinarama V. Lecavalier scores his 50th in a great season for him. CAR is in deep trouble folks. I can't recall any previous finalists where they played for the big prize yet they failed to make the playoffs the next season. Anyone?

Good night for the Leafs tonight, as far as other teams losing is concerned. Here's hoping they can take advantage of it tommorow night.

I'm pretty sure the Devils missed the playoffs in 1995-96 after winning the Cup in the lockout-shortened season.

But both teams? It's been a long time -- if ever -- since both finalists have failed to make the playoffs in the following season.

Hello, Google!

I don't remember where I saw it, but it is a first. The stat I saw said it would be the first time 'since the NHL took over the Stanley Cup in 1927 that both teams in finals didn't make playoffs the next year.'

I'm having a party tonight and a lot of the people coming over will be Leafs fans. Hopefully my house doesn't get destroyed one way or the other but either way I'm moving anyway I guess, heh.

The Leafs-Pens' OT Saturday night was the best hockey I've seen this season. Period. Incredible action.

Great game with J. Hughson calling the play by play. What is he doing in a Leaf game? If you want to make the playoffs you just can't blow a 4-1 lead knowing that in front of you, you have one of the most offensive minded teams in the league.

CAL-VAN had a playoff atmosphere from the beginning. W. Mitchell & J. Iginla were square dancing and so were a few at the beginning of the match. These two team just don't like each other. We miss Salo & Ohlund obviously, CAL's goal were all clear mistake by the young D, 3-2 for the Flames and now they have a couple of games vs the Avs, it should be interesting.

HNIC has split some of its traditional pairings this season and moved guys around. Last season it was a certainty in life, along with death and taxes, that Cole and Neale would call the Leafs and Hughson and Millen would call the 10 p.m. game.

This season, I've heard Hughson and Neale in Edmonton, Hughson and John Garrett out West, Cole and Millen in the East, and last night was the first time I heard Hughson call a game out East. Hughie is the best in the business, so that was very enjoyable.

Give ME an F'n break Paul. Ok, I should have said '90. Do I think they wanted to trade Metz and Gretz? Hell yeah they did! 'Cause they're too cheap to keep them. That's the only reason they did. What other reason is there?
Illitch and thier scouting department are heads and shoulders above any team out there. Name a first rounder on thier team. Fedorov 5th round, Lidstrom 3rd round. Sure they used to make a big deal at the deadline and spend the money. Why didn't Edmonton? They had every chance as any other team does. Just choose the right players.
Why do you hate the Wings so much? 'cause they draft players after the 3rd round that turn out to be superstars? Maybe it's because they have 4 cups in the last ten years and won the presidents almost every year. Then they were too old to win the cup. Oh I know, they BUY the cup every year and the cap was going to stop them, well here they are again fighting for the presidents trophy. Those sound like sound reasons to me. I can understand your frustration with choosing the wrong the players to make a run but is that a reason to hate a team that does it right year after year? I guess so.

As a small-market team, they didn't HAVE the money to pay both, especially with guys like McNall in L.A. and eventually the N.Y. Rangers waving obscene amounts of cash at these guys, knowing full well that small-market teams can't afford that. Just like the Yankees in baseball.
laurenskye wrote:Sure they used to make a big deal at the deadline and spend the money. Why didn't Edmonton? They had every chance as any other team does. Just choose the right players.
Pre-cap? See above. Post-cap? Lowe got Roloson, Tarnstrom, Spacek and Samsonov within a month of the deadline last season, and those players were major sparks in the drive to the Finals. This season, I think Lowe realized that even the addition of a puck-carrying D man wasn't going to cover for the rookies on the back line, and that there were a handful of underachieving forwards. So I think they packed it in, which pisses me off, but it's a rare time that's ever happened.
laurenskye wrote:Why do you hate the Wings so much?
Always have, which is ironic because Gordie Howe is my favorite player of all time. But Howe had left Detroit before I started following hockey in the early 70s, so I remember Gordie more as a Houston Aero or a New England Whaler than a Red Wing.
laurenskye wrote:Maybe it's because they have 4 cups in the last ten years and won the presidents almost every year.
Getting a bit presumptious, eh? That's three Cups in the last 10 years, four in the last 52 years. Meanwhile, the Oil won five Cups in seven years from 1984-90. But that was then; this is now.
laurenskye wrote:I can understand your frustration with choosing the wrong the players to make a run but is that a reason to hate a team that does it right year after year? I guess so.
How were the players that Lowe went and got last season, both before the season and up to the deadline, the wrong guys to make a run? They went to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Beating those ideally scouted Wings in the FIRST ROUND.

This season, it wasn't a case of choosing the wrong players to make a run, unless you count preseason. Lupul is a bust, and Smid needs work, so Anaheim basically stole Pronger.

But up to the deadline, Lowe's problem was choosing NO players, making no deals to bring in the talent the Oilers need NOW. Edmonton management mailed it in early, and that pisses me off. There's no way Detroit's management can be accused of that, both because of its pre-cap commitment to spending and its continuously good scouting.

Take care,
PK

Agree? Disagree? I think MacT got screwed a bit, but I wouldn't put him in the top 15.

29. Michel Therrien, Pittsburgh Penguins. The good news? The Penguins are staying in Pittsburgh. The other news? Therrien wouldn't have been moving with them anyway.

ummm. i stopped reading RIGHT there. come on. 29 out of 30? he had NOTHING to do with the turnaround this year.

what ever.

Who is this guy? I definitely would not include. P. Maurice & C. Julien in the top ten. TOR is not even sure of a playoff birth. However people like J. Quenneville & R. Wilson should be taking their places.

And P. Laviolette? What has he done this season? His teams looks in disarray, players are confused, they don't even have the identity that made them SC champions.

For the style of play and the consistentcy he's brought over his team, my choice for best coach is L. Ruff.

Yeah, that one was comical. Terrien has done a fantastic job with the Pens, and also lost his father about a month ago. I'm not sure if his father had a long-term illness, but doing fine work while undergoing such personal trauma makes his job performance even more impressive.

Maurice is good, but I think he gets too much of the "Leafs are Canada's national team" love in this ranking.

I have no problem with the top two, though: Trotz and Lindy are damn good.

Take care,

Yes. The Ego (Lou Lamoriello) has landed.

This tactic worked before, when Lou fired Ftorek before the playoffs a few years back, and the Devils won the Cup under Robinson. I sure as hell hope it doesn't work this year, as I hate the boring, boring Devils.
