I just found out that Ill Nino has a new EP out with a cover of Peter Gabriel's Red Rain. I love both Ill Nino and Red Rain, so I can't wait to hear this one.
There probably isn't much of a fanbase here for Country, but I'm starting to find more of it that I really like. I recently read someone saying that country is where mainstream rock has gone to hide, and I think that may be somewhat true. There are some country tunes that with a little tweaking could have been hard rock songs 15 years ago. I'm not saying they sounded dated, but just that the hard rock feel and a little of the style & attitude is there.

Jay-zus, "You Are My Face" off the new Wilco album is one of the prettiest songs I've heard in years. I must have listened to it 50 times in the last two days.
Blowing me away, as is the whole album ...
Take care,
PK

Thanks for the impressions on both the music and book - maybe I'll just pick up the CD and save myself ten bucks.Sudz wrote:the DELUXE edition arcade fire is a POS. waste of f***in $. i love merge (sold my house to the owner)...but it is crap. the cd. small booklet (nothing special) and two little flip books...crap. the flip books are those things that u flip and people move. crap. total crap.

COMPLETELY agree (except for the TV on the Radio reference)! I was not a huge fan of "Funeral" but liked it enough. But if you compare the two, Funeral is a much more difficult listen compared to Neon Bible IMO.pk500 wrote:Man, I don't think it's difficult at all. It's a really good listen. I thought "Funeral" was a tougher listen than "Neon Bible" because it dealt with a heavier subject and seemed more melancholy to me than "Bible."AJColossal wrote:It's funny that all the reviews have said the new Arcade Fire is a difficult album, but everyone I know who's heard it says it's great.
Definitely picking that up.
"Neon Bible" is an album in every sense of the word. As Spooky said, it's not a record where you just cherry-pick tracks. It really needs to be listened to from start to finish to appreciate.
But difficult? Hell, no. I thought TV on the Radio's "Cookie Mountain" was difficult because of the sonic chaos, which didn't click with me like so many others. But just because "Neon Bible" has a lot of different instruments doesn't mean they all mesh together beautifully and powerfully, because they do.
I must admit, I wasn't on The Arcade Fire wagon after "Funeral." It was good, but it didn't grab me for repeated listens. But "Neon Bible" is quite compelling.
Man, there has been a torrent of good albums released in the last month or so. Did I say torrent?
Take care,
PK

Instead of picking at other people's taste (which is my modus operandi, so to hold back is painful), I'll point out a few new things I think people may like (so no doom metal, though I'm loving it).
Amy Winehouse's second album, "Back To Black" just got released in the States yesterday. Solid update of classic soul sounds with 21st century attitude and subject matter.
Also hitting the shelves yesterday was the second release in the Neil Young archive series, "Massey Hall 1971". It has been my favorite NY acoustic bootleg for years, but the sound quality of this is SO much cleaner and more vivid than any of the boots I've come across. It was intended for release so was recorded well, only being shelved because Neil liked the cuts he recorded later that year in Nashville (those sessions became "Harvest"). Nice counterpoint to the electric wankery of the Fillmore show released last year.
A few weeks back saw the release of Elvis Perkins' "Ash Wednesday". I've been pimping Perkins for a year and his debut exceeds the expectations I had from his demos.

The new Metheny Mehldau Quartet album is some bad-ass new jazz. It's not all about Pat and Brad, either. The entire quartet is featured and integrated into the sound.
I'm digging it hard. Very nice record.
Take care,
PK

This came off as rather snobbish and better left unsaid.EZSnappin wrote:Instead of picking at other people's taste (which is my modus operandi, so to hold back is painful), I'll point out a few new things I think people may like (so no doom metal, though I'm loving it).

I'm sorry Scoop, and apologies to everyone else; it really wasn't meant that way. I just didn't want to pick a fight like I pretty much did with the Hold Steady last fall, but at the same time wanted to acknowledge the conversation that was taking place; to note that people probably didn't want my take on it (and hint at the reasons why), before moving on to some positive recommendations.ScoopBrady wrote:This came off as rather snobbish and better left unsaid.EZSnappin wrote:Instead of picking at other people's taste (which is my modus operandi, so to hold back is painful), I'll point out a few new things I think people may like (so no doom metal, though I'm loving it).
It does read pretty "dickish" on reflection, and could have been phrased better or dropped, as you point out (without being rude, I must say).

NPR's "All Songs Considered" is offering a superb live show with Explosions in the Sky for download:

Explosions in the Sky is such a cool band. A really unique sound, at least for me.
Take care,

Thanks for the link - always up for a good live set. If you want more, there are five shows posted here:pk500 wrote:NPR's "All Songs Considered" is offering a superb live show with Explosions in the Sky for download:

PK, you might like some of the stuff by MONO and Mogwai. There are a number of quality bands that are working in that primarily instrumental post-rock vein. It is a pretty rich genre right now - it might be worth doing some MySpace surfing to see if you like other stuff.
If you do get the chance, definitely see EITS - word is their albums can come across as pale and lifeless in comparison. I have a few friends who catch a few shows (which up here requires serious mileage) whenever they tour.

This isn't new music, but i wanted some advice. A friend of mine turned me on to Grant Lee Buffalo this weekend, namely Mighty Joe Moon and i was curious as to whether any of you listen and if so, what albums besides that one might be worth picking up. I realize only a few of you might even know who he is but if anyone can help that would be great.

Not that many here would care but the new Type O Negative album is very, very good. It's called Dead Again and has a pic of Rasputin on the cover. Peter and the boys put out a solid release and it only took them 4 years to do it.

Grant Lee Phillips' latest solo album Strangelet was released this month. It's more intimate that his stuff with Grant Lee Buffalo but not as down tempo as his 80s covera album last year.RallyMonkey wrote:This isn't new music, but i wanted some advice. If you like his other stuff, you'll probably like the new one.
