Yeah, that was worse than McSorley on Brashear and Bertuzzi on Moore because both of those guys hit helmets. Simon slashed Hollweg's jaw.

Simon should be gone until October, but Colie will never do it. No balls. Plus, sadly, that slash will get the NHL more air time in the U.S. this week than anything else.

Take care,
PK

I'm not an Avery fan, but this is a great quote:

"Let's just see if Colin Campbell finally does something about this stuff and doesn't give him three games like he gave that other meathead from New Jersey," Avery said.

Lord, the New York media must inhale every syllable from Avery. Unlike J.R., his talk has meaning because it comes from a player who still is very relevant and productive.

Take care,

He should be suspended for the rest of the season and playoffs and if he isn't than Campbell should be fired.

It's kinda sad, because part of the reason Roenick doesn't produce anymore is all the head injuries he suffered, including that shocking puck-to-the-jaw three years ago against the Rangers in New York.

Agreed - what Simon did was not acceptable.. I dont know what he was thinking, especially during the intermission when one of the Isles coaches said they talked about "keeping your cool".. Simon should be getting the "bench treatment" for a bunch of games

However, I feel that the officals in the game were HORRIBLE.. calling ticky tacky crap, & how Holliweg wasn't called for the original hit on Simon was beyond me. Then they call off a last second tying goal, which on replay was in the net (across the line).

What's the call? It wasn't boarding. Not high-sticking. Not roughing.

Hit looked hard and clean to me. A nice staple job.

PK, because of Simon's past offenses, C. Campbell should be giving him more than a 10 game suspension. More like the rest of the season and a fine perhaps. He's a repeat offender and in IMO, it makes the McSorley swing on Brashear pale in comparison.

Feanor, I don't think S. Moore's career is over yet, this week marked the third anniversary of the incident with Bertuzzi and in an interview, he expressed his wishes to start playing once he gets the medical OK. But he'll try to juice the incident as much as he can from the league and Bertuzzi before he makes a decision on what to do with his career.

no - no bias.. Simon should be gone.. no reason whatsoever to swing a stick like a baseball bat.. but to tell me that Holliweg should not be called for a penalty? Simon has his back to him & shoved face first into the glass.. to me that's a hit from behind..

Avery also is scum.. his motto is "let's run into the goalie".. Sorry, no place for that crap.

The only thing in common with those hits is that they used a stick as a "weapon".. other than that, to say what Simon did was worse than McSorley is, I'm sorry, not true

Hollweg's chin was bloodied, but he was not seriously injured and expects to play Saturday when the Rangers visit Pittsburgh

Brashear suffered a consussion and was out for a while. Holliweg came back, in the same game, with just a cut to the chin. But, the NHL needs to cut this out & Simon should get a 15 game ban.

not even close on that one.. for one, did Holliweg miss any time? NO - just a few minutes while he was on the bench.. While the intent on both accounts was probably to injure, give me a break.. to say Simon was actually WORSE than McSorley? Thanks for the chuckle.

Whoa, whoa, whoa: Hold the phone, here, Isles. Your bias is blinding you.

What difference does the severity of the injury matter? Let's say McSorley just gave Brashear a light tap, but it ruptured a blood vessel and killed him. That makes the intent more severe than Simon, who viciously chopped at a player's UNPROTECTED face and neck? Come on.

The reason Hollweg wasn't severely hurt wasn't because of the intent; it's because Simon has sh*tty aim and Hollweg has a tough chin.

What if Simon's chop hit Hollweg in the Adam's Apple and crushed his larynx? We're talking a life-threatening injury. What if the heel of the stick hit Hollweg in the eye? We're talking Bryan Berard II.

The suspension should be based on the intent and the veracity of the intent, not the outcome. And Simon was very clear in his intent: He wanted to hurt Hollweg badly.

Simon should be tossed without pay until training camp in September.

Take care,
PK

Maybe, but it sounds like another Keith Primeau situation to me:

Again, I am not biased, and agree that Simon should get what he deserves - last night i didnt see what actually happened till i saw the replay & sat there in shock. But my point was that people were calling this incident worse than the McSorley or Bertz incident, which I dont happen to agree with.

Either that, or I may be drinking some funky water

Now, wait a second man. So should the punishment be based on the 'Intent' or the 'Result'? I say that the suspension should definitely be based on the intent, even though the victim eventually got up.

Simon could have ended Hollweg's career, and I don't think I am over stretching it. We don't know how Hollweg feels today, but that lumber could have literally killed him if it reached his neck. The intent was to harm the NYR's player as a sign of revenge over the boarding penalty that was not called. And like Bertuzzi, he hunted Hollweg for his action.

Now we can agree or disagree over how long Simon should be suspended. But if you judge the Bertuzzi incident, he was gone for the remainder of the season including the playoffs that year and still was not reinstated to play until 04-05 year, although there was no season.

Add the fact that Simon is a repeat offender in the league, and he should be suspended for awhile even though Hollweg is walking today. If the league finally wants to get it right over this type of inexcusable behaviour, they should make a stern example with C. Simon. Does someone need to die until someone wakes up?

There's a general rule of thumb for people that play hockey. Never ever consider using their stick to chop down an opposing player for retribution no matter how bad the situation. We've always learned to drop the stick whenever angered & just punch the guy in the head.

There's even a rumor that depending on the investigation, the State of NY may also get involved just like the McSorley incident, where it went to the provincial courts in Vancouver. And yep, so far he's gone indefinitely, but it depends what that word means to G. Bettman & C. Campell.

Pk, I have to travel tomorrow, so I'll miss HNIC but it would be interested to see what Don Cherry has to say about this incident with Simon.

I agree with PK and 10s, what Simon did was atrocious, and IMO worse than McSorley. As much as I hate Holliweg, his hit on Simon was perfectly clean. Feet on the ground, shoulder to shoulder, against a player who was not facing the boards at the time of the hit. The only reason the hit looks at all bad was that Simon tried to turn away from the hit and went into the boards awkward, but Holliweg's action was perfectly legit.

Simon's response was a total farce, taking a full swing at a defenseless player's face. The force of Simon's stick swing was much greater than McSorley's swing, as Brashear's real injury came from his head hitting the ice. Overall the hit was very similar to the Alexander Perezhogin stick swing to the face, though this wasn't quite as bad. For the sake of comparison, the AHL banned Perezhogin from the rest of the playoffs and the ENTIRE next season for his act.

That's the dirty c*nt who put the final nail in the coffin for Keith Primeau's career with an elbow to the chin well away from the puck. Of course, he didn't get a penalty called on him, let alone a suspension.

Buffalo fans are so spoiled. I have to rant. So, Buffalo has lost the last two games to Colorado and Minnesota(both fighting for their lives), while Buffalo has far less to play for. They had a pretty mediocre effort against Colorado, with Miller playing a really good game. Last night, they played a solid game for two periods(something like 27 shots and basically controlling play), they just couldn't crack the goalie and trailed 2-0. This leads to a chorus of boos as they leave the ice. A really smart goal by Demitra(bounced one off Miller's mask and in) put them up 3-0 early in the third, and the team just stopped playing. They quickly fall behind 4-0 and Lindy calls a timeout. He puts Conklin in for the first time, and the idiot Sabres fans decide to give the "Bronx cheer" for every single stupid save he made until the end of the game. Are you serious? I'm really not sure why they expect to win every game, and it seems they place a lot of that on Miller, even though they scored a whopping 3 goals in the last two games. Bandwagoners can be so frustrating.....

Thanks for letting me ramble on. I feel much better now.

Well CrazyPsycho your BUF team does have a lot of injuries so fans need to understand that. They played one of the hottest teams in the NHL in Minny ( I wouldn't say they're fighting for their lives) who's fighting for 1st spot in the tough NW division.

I guess my reasoning as to why the Simon incident was "not worse" than either Bertz or McSorley was for the result- that the player was able to walk away. I think I wasnt really "looking at the big picture".. I do not condone what he did, I mean, how can you? Quite honesty, I am embarrased to be an Isles fan today - & this was coming off my "highlight of the year" watching the Isles dismantle the Caps 6-2 this past Saturday.

You've still got Smytty, you prick! :) That's a source of pride -- 100-percent quality player and guy.

It also pisses me off that Bergie has found new life on the Island. How come he didn't play this well this season in Edmonton?

Kyle Wellwood back - maybe that'll put some punch back into the Maple Leafs powerplay. They were top five in the league before he got injured, now they're nineteenth.
