The NHL should alter Janssen's suspension: He sits as long as Kaberle does. That would be a stronger deterrent to such thug tactics.

I have a similar idea, pk. You know how Janssen got a 3 game suspension which cost him a measly $7,000? Well, maybe the NHL should protect the skill guys who make the league what it is by fining suspended players the value of the games missed by the guy they injure.

Kabaerle makes $4.25 million, which is about $50,000 per game. He's going to miss 17 games which means Janssen's fine would have been $850,000!

Now I know a dirty 1-goal goon like him couldn't afford to pay that much, so maybe the personal limit could be $250,000, and anything over that has to be paid by the team AND it comes off their salary cap for next season.

Seems the Ontario Hockey League has already made head hunting illegal, without removing hitting from the game altogether:

Craig Hartsburg, through his coaching of the Canada's world junior champs, has become one of the hotter coaching prospects at the moment.

Given that he was also a distinguished NHL defenceman for many years, he might have an opinion or two worth listening to.

And he says the Ontario Hockey League's head checking policy would easily fit the NHL.

"I don't see why not," he said today. "It sure hasn't taken away hitting in our league. I think it has a place in every league."

In the "O," any hit that makes contact with an opponent's head nets a two-minute minor, and anything more egregious than that is five and a game.

Hartsburg said he was surprised by the hit on Leaf defenceman Tomas Kaberle by Cam Janssen of the New Jersey Devils that left Kaberle with a concussion.

"For the most part, players in the NHL have better respect for each other," he said. "But you see a hit like Janssen's and you realize there are still players in the game who are out to hurt people."

Hartsburg, meanwhile, is expected to decide in the next week or so whether he'll coach Canada's entry in the 2008 world junior championships in the Czech Republic.

Blues forward Lee Stempniak is a pretty good bargain...he's about 5pts shy from being probably in the top 3 on that list.

Ouuu PK, you bring back in me some nice memories. Back in the early 80's, no one and I mean absolutely nobody gave the 'Nucks an iota of a chance during the playoffs, never mind going to the Stanley Cup finals. That team was pure grit, a bunch of grinders led by S. Smyl who didn't understand the word 'quit'. We were outplayed badly during some of the playoffs games, but King Richard always kept the games close. There was this feeling that even though we didn't have the talent, as long as R. Brodeur kept us in the game, the team would just ride him all along.

He wasn't nicknamed KING for nothing.

( He was the reason, we weren't blown out in too many games during regular season vs your then Mighty Oilers.

Forward to the 90's and that team had way more talent that I could count in my fingers. Led by the Russian rocket P. Bure and Captain Kirk, that 94 team didn't know how good they were, they always knew they had the talent but they weren't playing as a team concept. But Kirk Maclean gave that confidence that the team lacked and everyone started to pinch in. He had some out of your mind saves.

That game 7 at MSG still is my favourite SC finals of all time, even though we lost it in a heartbreaker. Captain Kirk then was the favourite 'Nucks goaltender of all time.

What can you say about Louie? R. Luongo proved himself already that he was a workhorse during his days in FLO and during the first two months of the season, our record didn't reflect the work ethic of the team (who lost a bunch of close one game goals) and was hampered by the lack of goals until they sharpened their targets skills after xmas' time.

R. Luongo is the better athetle of the three, his preparation during games is amazing. He shows up early during practice sessions and would go to the stands and start envisioning the top guns of the opponent team.

But although we are back in the playoffs this season after a dissappointing 05-06, he's never been in a playoff game. So in a way he's still has to prove himself where it counts.

He'll brake Captain Kirk's record this week and come playoffs' time the whole team will have to rely on his saves if we are to move along.

For now if I had to choose one, I would have to go with the calmness and poise of Kirk Maclean...until Roberto brings the Cup to Vancouver this year.

The battle of the two NY teams is certainly heating up in the East for a final spot in the playoffs. With three more left games among them, tough guy Chris Simon just viciously crosschecked. R. Hollweg in the neck after he boarded Simon against the plexi-glass.

The vicious lumber makes the McSorley-Brashear, Bertuzzi-Moore incidents pale in comparison to Simon's crosscheck. If the NHL doens't come hard on him, then C. Campbell should quit his post.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next game among these two teams turns in a goon fest.

Wow, that looked terrible on the close-up replay, although I don't think it was necessarily any worse than what McSorely and Bertuzzi did. Bertuzzi especially, since his hit ended another player's career.

Simon was very lazy and stupid to use his stick - he could have done more damage with his elbow or shoulder and gotten a suspension far smaller than what he'll get for the cross-check.

Colie better give him 10, or he's a pandering candy-ass. But considering Colie comes from the same neanderthal school as Brian Burke, Simon probably will get three to five.

Smytty goes from the Battle of Alberta right to the New York rivalry. He must feel at home already.
