F1: Championship - PS3 Impressions...

Post by Spooky »

Anyone pick this up yet? I just got it today and will probably not be the best one for impressions as I am not a racing purest by any means.

I always have fun with F1 games though and I liked the demo quite a bit. I'll probably leave most of the driving aids on for a while too as I just don't have enough time to dedicate to practicing and practicing the driving model as well as EVERY track. But I still want to play this thing and go REALLY fast. :)

I'd be interested to hear others impressions though and I could try and answer any questions people may have.

Hehe, just the aright amount of empty lines there. :)

F1 was the first PS1 game I ever bought, so I'm interested in this PS3 version. Shame it doesn't have Murray Walker doing commentary, unless I'm very much mistaken.

i'm no expert, but this game is fun.
there's a great sense of speed, everything looks gorgeous, and the options to mess around with the various driving aids (stability, auto braking, and the a/la forza color line on the track to hint at when to brake really help out losers (like me) that can't make it past the first three qualifying rounds of grand turismo.

for purists, the option to remove all or any of these driving aids is there to allow you to spin out of control and retire from the race anytime you want.

Yes you can and there are 4 different options of button layouts with it.
One option for d pad steering and one option for tilt steering.
Three wheels are supported, all logitech.
Driving force pro
Driving force ex
G25.
The wheels work relatively well but as stated have zero ff. At least the center spring is enabled which does help a lot.

I'm using The DFP but it seems to be better set up as a G25.

I toyed around with it for 3 hrs or more last night and started a career.

Graphics are really good.
Driving aids galore

Career is a blast but most people will not like all the set up evolution prior to races , I love it, its a great way to set up the car without tinkering with numbers and you get to drive a lot more on track rather than in the garage tinkering. You feel more like an actual driver this way actually doing real testing at the track, I presume this happens for every Grand Prix.
It can be skipped by the casual racer.

The game probably plays best with a game pad but after the 4 hrs I have into it with a wheel I'm getting a much better feel and its getting better all the time.

Car physics are dumbed way down but with the dodgy control it kinda has to be, no way you could drive these cars on the edge with this type of control input.

The racing is good and the ai is decent so far and has a very aggresive braking style so if your off line (which happens a lot cause of control) they're down the inside.
They have incidents with each other and mechanical failures and stuff which is nice.

Sound is just like the demo. I heard it was better in the actual game, but its not so while the sound is by no means bad in fact its pretty darn good. I was a little disappointed I wanted that peak vibration, rattle your teeth out sound the Ferrari has.

Its still early to give an honest review yet but i would say as of right now its about a 7.5.

Not best driving model holds it back for me but the rest of the package is really good.

Feel free to ask questions. This is a game I will get to know pretty darn well , so for once I may be able to give a decent answer.

A review I read (1up's I think) said that the AI cars react to each other, but not to the player's car and this causes a lot of frustrating accidents. Do you think that's the case?

Well they havn't run into the back of me yet and there is some bumps at the side if they are aggresively overtaking as its hard to see them or know they are there but thats the same in all racers.

I'd have to have a few more racesbefore i could realy be sure about the AI but in the 10 or so short races ive done it hasn't been a problem.

Im usualy ploughing into the back of them.
