Perreault is a valuable player, especially with Peca hurt. He's a solid two-way player and one of the top faceoff guys in the league.10spro wrote:They get instead Y. The FAN 590 is reporting Ryan Smyth going to the Islanders. No word on what's coming to Edmonton.
Update: Newsday is reporting Isles are sending two prospects and a first-round pick to Edmonton.
I'm GUTTED. Great f*cking timing by Lowe. He'll be pelted with rocks and garbage tonight during the Mess ceremony. He better not show up.
The deal clearly shows the Oil has given up on this season.
But this deal is so lopsided for the Isles that I can only imagine that it's a rental and that Kevin Lowe and Don Meehan have arranged a deal to return Smytty to Edmonton over the summer for $5 million per season. I bet Lowe couldn't move Torres or Lupul to make cap room, so he was forced to rent Smytty until he could move Torres and Lupul over the summer.
Take care,
PK

Something wasn't quite right during an interview yesterady with Smitty. Although he was hopeful, he didn't sound like one. Apparently Meehan and Lowe were at it until the last 20 minutes before the trade deadline but couln't come to an agreement.
On M. Messier's night there will be some boos for sure. Kudos to G. Snow though on his 1st year as GM, he picks a great player who doesn't mind getting his face dirty in front of the net.

I am gutted as well.
O'marra and Nillson sound like great prospects, but they are prospects! 1st rounder is nice, but it won't be all that high the way things are going.
PK, like you, i can only hope it's a 'rental' and he signs back in the summer, but something tells me it's not the case.
Ever the classy guy, Smytty won't be interviewed today (reported by TSN) because he doesn't want to overshadow Mark Messier's ceremony tonight.
It's going to be a sombre building though.
I won't be wearing my jersey in the playoffs this year....

Well, on one hand you have only twenty minutes to swing a deal before the deadline, so what the hell do you do? Stick with R. Smyth who could walk have walked away this summer for nothing? Lowe took a chance, and although Smitty could return to Oil land, it all depends how pissed he felt the last couple of weeks as they were working for a long term contract.tjung0831 wrote:The Oilers got hosed on that deal....man that sucks. well yeah...when I say that the Oilers got hosed, i'm just basing it on the fact that Smyth should have stayed an Oiler. I agree that Lowe had to get something for him, but Smyth is just one of those guys that just won't look right wearing another uni. I just think it sucks for Oiler fans...10spro wrote:Well, on one hand you have only twenty minutes to swing a deal before the deadline, so what the hell do you do? Stick with R. This deal (along with others apparently) was worked out a week or more ago, as Klowe was setting up "back up plans".10spro wrote:

This wasn't a 20 minute deal.
Anaheim was even in the running for a bit.

From the Oilers mailing list:
"Following today’s trade, Oilers General Manager, Kevin Lowe said “I want to be very clear that making this trade today is a hockey decision. It was not financial. The CBA we operate with in the NHL today means you need to have a sound hockey strategy and stick to it. Today we turned a page for sure – but this is not as much about the Oilers today, but what we continue to do as part of an overall plan.
Our decision is about the direction we want to take and the opportunities we have today and tomorrow with the brilliant young players we have acquired and those we have in the organization. I want everyone to know that our decision was much more to do with a plan than a reaction. Ryan is taking a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Our opportunity is to have a sound strategy for the future.
I would also like to say that Ryan Smyth has contributed a great deal over 12 seasons here in Edmonton. He should be thanked for his contribution on the ice and in the community.”
Oilers President and Chief Executive Officer, Patrick LaForge added “While on the one hand some Oilers fans might be distressed that this trade was made today, I want those same fans to be assured that the Oilers will use these excellent young players and our own deep pool of young talent in a new plan for this team. We can afford to spend the money necessary to have the kind of elite players expected. This was about the Oilers staying true to a plan. I know our hockey strategy is sound.”

I'm not that strident. The Oilers have some really good talent on the farm who have stepped in over the past two years and played fairly well. Pouliot, Greene, Hejda, Stortini, etc., with Brodziak, Cogliano and maybe Schremp waiting in the wings.tjung0831 wrote:The Oilers got hosed on that deal....man that sucks. Lowe also made great deals last spring to put the Oil in position for their deep playoff run.
But Edmonton got hosed on this deal, no doubt. All I can think is that it's a rental and Smytty will return in the summer, much like Weight last year in the deal from St. Louis to Carolina and then back.
One can only hope. Otherwise, Garth Snow and Charlie Wang have gone from the laughing stock of the league last summer to one of the more shrewd GM-owner tandems in the NHL.
But no question, the Messier ceremony could be very awkward tonight, especially if Lowe takes a turn behind the mike. He's the GM and longtime teammate of Mess, so I would think that a quick Lowe speech might be -- or have been -- on the schedule.
Take care,
PK

I don't think Rod Phillips screwed up Andy, but he definitely botched Cocoa, calling him No. 39.
Great ceremony, though. Much more of a hometown, lower-glitz feel than the Rangers' ceremony for Mess.
I thought it was great that the Moose put on the uniform one last time. And you bet I shed more than one tear when he emerged on the rink, hoisting the Cup over his head. And then to see all those former players return, including all of the other players with their jerseys retired, it was a very special night.
Take care,
PK

Tim, I thought you were busy watching your Blues trap the Canucks to death tonight.
Boy the way St Louis played tonight it makes the Wild of yesteryear a fun team. All five players in the neutral zone, not even one forechecking in the blue line. Still, no excuses, 'Nucks looked flat like a pancake.
I don't think there was dry eye at the Rexall tonight. Even #99 was caught with all the emotions. Especially when Mess says:
"Wayne was our leader. He was our inspiration. He was a guy that we leaned on and he never let us down and he never put himself above anybody. I certainly learned a lot from Wayne."
Touching.

And isn't the voodoo marketing that brought us all of these hideous new jerseys working so well for the NHL and its teams, especially in the States?

It's probably just coincidence, but the Oilers' only offensive star -- Smytty -- is dealt, and the Oil then is shut out by lowly Phoenix.

Obviously the biggest deal of the day was Smyth. And people are buzzing about Guerin going to San Jose, and Roberts and Laraque going to Pittsburgh.
But the "under the radar" deal to me was Matty Norstrom going to Dallas. That makes the Stars a VERY dangerous team in the playoffs. Norstrom was a fine leader as the Kings' captain and is an excellent defenseman.
Put Norstrom with Zubov in front of Turco, and the Stars will be tough to penetrate. Plus you add Boucher, Sydor and Klemm, and Dallas might have the deepest talent pool on defense in the West, if not the NHL.
Don't forget that some of the Stars' offensive players -- Modano, Lindros, etc. -- injured earlier this season are starting to come back.
The Norstrom deal was pretty quiet on a day of biggies. But it could have the longest-reaching implications this spring.
Lord, the Western playoffs will be a clash of the titans. Nashville. San Jose. Anaheim. Dallas. Detroit. Vancouver. Any of those clubs could win the Cup. Calgary and Minnesota are the only weak links in the Western playoff picture, and Calgary still could be dangerous if Kipper gets REALLY hot.
Take care,
PK

cant wait to see the "new guys" this Sat against the Caps..
while it may be a "rental" deal, that Smyth trade was indeed a shocker. I am not worried about the rookies the gave up, as Nilsson never really showed anything (when he was up last year - & the fact that they didnt call him up this year says something with all the injuries they had).. for all the bashing that Snow took becoming a GM (myself included), he has done one heck of a job this year
