OT: The NBA 06-07 Season Thread

The rule has made more teams try to draw charges than try to actually defend the shot.

Which means more collisions than when shotblockers actually tried to defend the basket.

Some teams at least do track how many charges they draw. But I don't know that the NBA or any sports site shows number of charges called against players or drawn by these guys sliding in front while players are in the air.

Just in case you are curious...yes the nba does track that...at least charges taken because the Suns announcers decide to bring it up everytime defensive liability Nash takes a charge...he is leading the league btw, so he must be doing something right on D.

Now THAT is worth crying about and getting wheeled off the court. I had a similar thing happen in high school (thankfully not on video) that ended any further competitive play. I know that medicine has advanced a great deal in the last two decades, but he was fragile and injury prone to start with.

Can someone answer this question - why is New Orleans rebuilt enough and 'safe' enough to host NBA and NFL games and playoff games and the Sugar Bowl but is not secure enough to host the NBA All Star game next year?

I have heard different accounts of the All Star game events in LV ranging from it being a great party to it being a disaster of violence and mayhem. Even some columnists seem to have trouble differentiating between the 2 (Jason Whitlock had a column about the mayhem and a blog about the fun parties).

Wouldn't keeping Pacman Jones away take care of half the problems?

And does this say more about New Orleans or the NBA All Star game?

I had some friends that went to Vegas last weekend and said it was a nightmare. So I'd have to lean towards the violence and mayhem side.

Isn't Vegas trying to market itself as more family-friendly?

It's also the fastest-growing city in the country.

Guess the old seedly underbelly of Vegas is still around.

There should be stats on the crime rate compared to other cities.

For sports leagues, the bigger issue is how closely they want to be associated with gambling. Baseball is really paranoid about the association and the NFL also seems to keep a distance (although betting on NFL is obviously the biggest). NBA seems to really be the only one to embrace it, purely for demographic reasons.

They need at least two teams for expansion right? So it might be more likely for a northern team to just move there. Heard the Timberwolves aren't drawing and of course, players hate playing in Canada for tax reasons so Toronto could be a possibility too.

The Wolves aren't drawing well, but they aren't alone - this formatting is going to be awful, but here are the teams averaging less than 17,000 (18-30th in attendance rank). As always, put sh*t product (or unlikeable) on the floor and attendance will drop. To me, the biggest concern has to be Charlotte, a new team with a new arena.

Warriors end Mavs streak, lead by as many as 31.

That's 3-0 against the Mavs this season and the last 4 out of 5.

It could be interesting if they matched up in the first round.

It's exactly what happened to the Suns. They just get bored of beating everyone. Seems like 17 in a row is the magic number.

Someone want to tell Yao to just take the day off when the Suns are in town (or they are in Phoenix). The dude is garbage in that type of game. Houston gets trounced again by Phoenix. Gonna be a hellova game in Dallas on Wednesday.

That was one f*cking great Dallas/Phoenix game. If you were lucky enough to watch it, you were treated to some damn good basketball. Wow. I'm not quite sure why Dirk faded away on the final shot when he got Marion up in the air...he easily could have gotten the foul call. Maybe he was paranoid that he'd miss another free throw like he did in the 4th in crunch time.

I only caught the OTs, but from what I saw of those the game had the feel of an all-time classic regular season game.

Hopefully these two square off in a 7-game Western Conference Final.

The Suns have had three of those in the last couple years. Two years ago against Seattle when Ray Allen hit a 30 footer in 2OT to win it. And earlier this year when the Suns beat New Jersey in 2OT as well. Classics.

The things that bugs me is the hypocrisy of it all. If college bball players are allowed to go one and done then it should be the same for football players too. The NCAA needs to make up their minds because its just plain unfair to allow the bball kids to become bajillion'aires a good three years before their football compadres. I'd rather see bball players play all four years at their schools because it would make the college game a lil' easier to follow sometimes.

Man, the race in the East is really heating up. Bulls play Detroit tonight then a big one with the Cavs on Saturday in a battle for the second seed.

I love what the NBA did this year, not automatically giving the top three seeds to division winners, letting one second-place team sneak in there if they have a better record than a division leader. The battle for the second seed between the Cavs and Bulls is even bigger this year considering the loser drops all the way to the fifth seed.

Although the East seems so wide-open this year, the seedings might not matter as much once the playoffs start.

Pretty good weekend of Suns hoops. Go in Friday about an hour before game time...went down to the locker room to see some of the guys on their way out to the court against Denver. The promptly went out and had a horrible first half, then blew them out in the 2nd.

Went to practice on Saturday...talked with a few of the players...got Barbosa, Marion and Nash all to autograph my had...then went to the film room to watch some of the plays that they were working on to defensively stop Dallas on Sunday. That was really f'n interesting. Seeing how the coaches work with the players on the smallest little things.

Then of course, went to the Dallas game today. Was a pretty good game through a half...then the Suns turned it on. Dallas doesn't have an answer for Barbosa at all. He could be a HUGE factor in any series they play against each other if they make it that far this year. As usual, the Suns had no answer for Stackhouse...so I think those two guys will be the factors in any series going forward. That was a damn fun game to watch though...just beating the bejesus out of them. It happens...and D'Antoni said it best. We are not better than them...they have the best record. It really doesn't matter until the playoffs anyway.

Overall...a pretty productive weekend in Phoenix. Now off to Atlanta on Friday morning for the Braves home opener. LOL.

DB you truly are a DSP funk all-star. I think the suns are going all the way this year riding in on another MVP year from Nash. They'll probably face off against the Heat or Pistons (I'm hoping for Lebron's cavs) but what do i know I don't get to hang out in locker rooms with NBA stars:) Just out of curiousity how long did they spend breaking down the film on the mavs? Was it players or coaches?

About 20 min. They basically were showing the last time they played and what worked and what didn't work. Then a couple of the newer plays that the Mavs had been running recently. It was both the coaches and players.

Yeah and I don't want to hear about how virtuous and Christian some stars and teams are. A lot of athletes will still thank God for helping them beat some other team, which is even more absurd than nations at war praying to God for help in beating their enemies, who are praying to the same God for the same thing.
