That's a steal for Vancouver. Smolinski is a much better, more complete player than Kesler, especially for the short term. Smolinski only makes $1.5 million, too. Take care, PK
That's right PK, although he's a bit on the old side, he can play both on a PP and PK unit. Fourteen goals this season and a strong faceoff guy. To make more cap room, M. Chouinard has been put on waivers, so I expect a couple of more moves by the 'Nucks.

smoke lost a KEY faceoff in the pit/fla series. he lost the draw and then didn't tie up his center. the shot came in from the point. the rebound bounced right out to the center following the play. goal. series over.

Last few trades:

Washington Zednik to Islanders for 2007 2nd round pick.

Kings Sopel to Canucks for 2nd and 4th round picks.

Blackhawks Smolinski to Canucks for conditional 2nd round pick.

The Blackhawks sent a 3rd round pick and defenseman Lasse Kukkonen to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward Kyle Calder.

Chicago then moved Calder to the Red Wings in return for forward Jason Williams.

ESPN's columnist J.Bucci on C. Drury's hit last week:

"I don't understand why a shoulder pad to the head is not equivalent to an elbow to the head. This is a hit that needs to be outlawed in the NHL. Chris Neil had plenty of time and space to make a decision on how to hit Chris Drury. That alone tells you the hit was a late hit. It was superfluous, unsportsmanlike and excessive. How many stories have we read of players being seriously hurt after hitting their heads on the ice? It is why USA Hockey now mandates all coaches wear helmets during practice.

The force of Drury's head hitting the ice was frightening. It could have killed him."

A bit of a deviation on deadline day. This movie looks like pure magic:

As someone who grew up playing pond hockey and still plays it, yes, I had a tear in my eye after watching the trailer.

Take care,

Remember, fellas: TSN.ca and Sportsnet.ca are broadcasting their TV streams live today, and The Fan 590 from Toronto streams on the Net at fan590.com. If you're using Adblock with Firefox, shut off Adblock to get the Fan 590 stream.

Enjoy Deadline Day! I'm a bit giddy. :)

Damn TSN and Sportsnet live streams aren't available for connections outside of Canada. F*ckers!

Looks like it's the FAN 590 for me. Good coverage -- they're interviewing NHL beat reporters from all over the league.

Take care,
PK

One of the most exciting days in Hockey. Trade on. Although I don't expect the 'Nucks to make any further moves after yesterday, it would be nice to find a suitor for our whipping boy J. Bulis. :)

What do you think the Oils will do today, PK? Sellers or buyers? R. Smyth didn't sound too good in an interview yesterday an a rumor has it that management would like him to take an offer by the trading deadline today or he could be part of a package. Not a way to treat Smytty, wouldn't you say?

Biron's gone. No real details yet. Too many injuries, Regier had to get some insurance.

Darcy Regier has no choice. He's used up the farm players already, T. Connolly still hasn't played this year, and with the latest rash of injuries in BUF, he has to trade Biron who makes 2.2 a year, but at the same time he needs another back up for R. Miller. Would the Habs be the team that Biron is going to? Although reports are that he's gone to Philly.

Hmm, Biron for an undisclosed draft pick. I'm assuming it's conditional on whether they sign him. I was kinda hoping the Flyers would sign Biron in the offseason and let he and Nittymaki go into next season as a tag team, but didn't expect to see the Flyers actually trade for him. I guess I'll have to reserve judgment on that for now.

Either way, I like what Holmgren's done, as the Flyers all of a sudden have a surplus of defensemen. It'll be interesting to see how the spots play out, and I'd still like to see the Flyers sign a top pairing guy as a free agent with all their cap space.

Oh, dear. Buffalo better start praying novenas that Miller stays healthy. As an Oilers' fan, I know how much Conklin sucks like a Hoover.

The biggest part of this deal: Biron finally can paint his mask, as the Fan 590 said. :)

Laraque on the move from Phoenix. GM Barnett said it's down to two teams, will divulge later.

Take care,
PK

The New York Post is reporting that Rangers GM Glen Sather is shopping Jaromir Jagr. He is one of the NHL's great bargains at a cap cost of just $4.5 million (the Capitals pick up another $3.8 million), but that deal expires at the end of the 07-08 season.

With the playoffs in danger for NYR, Sather wants to do a similar deal that Philly got for Forsberg. Picks and young players.

James:

I think Smytty gets signed today. Edmonton papers think a deal in principle is in place, and Meehan and Lowe will hash out details today.

On the night that Mess' jersey will be retired, I can't imagine Edmonton dealing the face of the franchise on the same day. It would be a master stroke of PR if Smytty's deal was announced this afternoon, followed by the Mess ceremony.

Brad Winchester is as good as gone. MacT doesn't play him anymore. I think Lupul definitely is in play, too. Talk also is that captain J. Smith could move if the deal is right.

Take care,
PK

Intriguing Deadline Day subplot: Does anyone take a chance on JR?

I'm not sure. First, he can be a real pain in the ass in the room. Second, he's not very good anymore.

Apparently there's a war in the room between Aaron Ward and Jagr, from what I've read. Says a lot about what the Rangers think of Jagr that in a pissing match between Jagr and Ward, Jagr moves.

Rumors:

Laraque to Calgary
Seabrook to Edmonton
Mayers to Toronto

I would be OVER THE MOON if the Oil got Seabrook, as long as the price isn't too steep.
