TSN reporting the deal as official:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=196732&hubname=

This deal also may tip off that the Oilers have become sellers instead of buyers. Grebeshkov is playing this season in Russia and is a restricted free agent this summer, so how the f*ck is he going to help Edmonton for any playoff stretch drive?

Maybe the Oil will give Tom Gilbert a longer audition on D now. That might be the plan with this move for this season.

Take care,
PK

Agree on your assessment on R. Smyth, PK. He deserves the raise and I would even say he's a six million dollar man. A couple of reasons maybe why R. Lowe did not meet his agent. He's probably getting orders from one of the owners to trade him if the Oils continue their slide in exchange for some prospects and/or picks.

Funny thing at this time of the year last season, EDM knew they needed a goaltender so they went after Rolie. This year it's clear that their blue line is the weakest link (Sundin just literally shoved Staios aside for his goal yesterday) and nothing has been doen yet. I have a feeling that after this road trip they'll be sellers rather than buyers if things don't improve ASAP.

True, James. And the scary thing is that Staios has been the Oil's best player on the blue line this season.

Sundin is a beast, a true beast. I can't believe there are/were even rumors that the Leafs will deal him. He has become indispensible and the face of that franchise, much like Smytty in Edmonton.

I'm just not sure how much of this inaction is the current trade market or how much of it is EIG telling Lowe, Howson and Prendergast to save money for the prospective new building and mail in the season.

Take care,
PK

That's what I'm hoping, that getting rid of MAB was just to open some room (and cap space) for another Dman.

No rumours or more reports on TSN today though.....

Duhatschek, Morrison and LeBrun all speculated on "Satellite Hotstove" Saturday night on "Hockey Night in Canada" that the Blues might sit tight with Tkachuk, Guerin and Brewer because the team is playing so well under Murray and might have an outside shot at a playoff berth.

That's a bit of a stretch, I think. I still think St. Louis will be dealing before the deadline. Hopefully sending Brewer to Edmonton! How about Brewer and Tkachuk to Edmonton for Smyth, Lupul and a few picks? I have a real suspicion that Smytty is as good as gone, and it pains me.

Even with the Blues winning tonight they are still 10pts out. They are going to be sellers, possibly early this week. The value of Guerin and Tkachuk are just to high right now not to sell. I'm expecting a couple of big moves real soon!

Yep. The NHL GM's are heading to Naples, Fla., for winter meetings Monday and Tuesday, and I don't think many are bringing their golf clubs. I think some deals will be swung this week, for sure.

Fun times!

Rumors out of Philly are that Derian Hatcher may be the next to go. Oddly enough, there's supposedly at least 3 teams interested in his services.

From Tim Panaccio:

Hatcher: Next to go?

Now that Peter Forsberg has been traded, is Derian Hatcher next?

There are at least three clubs actively looking at Hatcher as the Feb. 27 trade deadline approaches, including Edmonton, Dallas and San Jose. Hatcher believes that Detroit is also interested in him.

"I want to stay here," Hatcher - who likes being a Flyer, likes the area, and enjoys the lifestyle here - said this week. "I would rather not leave. It's a [hassle] moving again. But if they want to trade me... don't want me anymore, I would go."

VAN edges COL 5-4 at the garage as the AVS literally had to win this game to avoid falling further behind for a post season place. Burnaby Joe Sakic probably has a no trade clause but I believe he only signed for one year. With the AVS in a rebuilding phase, I can't stop but wonder if Sakic would be available as COL most likely won't make the playoffs this year.

What an addition that would be for any team, even though he's four years older than Forsberg, I rather have him in my team any day. Of course, all is speculation but one can only dream...

Who will the Pens get? or need?

they are on an EPIC run right now and have to be considered to at least have a shot at going two rounds deep.

move malone and maybe armstrong and a pick for guerin or tzachuk.

Malone is in the first year of a two-year deal, but Armstrong is on a one-year deal now.

I guess the question that Pittsburgh management needs to ask: The team is hotter than hell right now with its current players. Do the Pens NEED to make a move?

Interesting hockey times in Steel City.

Pens are 14-0-2 I believe, and their are the hottest team by far. Come playoffs time, it's always good to have a solid veteran in D, someone that can take the load a bit off M. Recchi and guide all the young guns. Because if S. Crosby is complaining of the odd shove here and there, the road to Lord Stanley will get that much more physical.

I still think the team may need a bit more toughness to protect him and maybe a D. Hatcher would fit well there in D, a Brad May type of guy among the forwards.
I think someone already mentioned it but funny thing is the Pens are on this hot streak while #87 is not at his best.

I agree.
So do I.

From the TSN story:

>>>Other issues discussed Monday included:

- Goalies freezing the puck too often;
pk500 wrote:Agree. But how do you enforce it? The guys on "Satellite Hotstove" mentioned that teams of goalies who freeze the puck might not be allowed to make a line change, similar to the new deterrent against icing. Not sure about that, especially since goalies are getting run so much. Often times freezing the puck is the only way they can protect themselves.
- The length of pre-game ceremonies;
pk500 wrote:Wholeheartedly agree. Some of these things are ridiculously long, like the 70-minute ceremony for Messier at MSG and more than an hour for Mike Vernon in Calgary. Mike F*cking Vernon -- come on!
- The idea of going to one-minute penalties in overtime;
pk500 wrote:Don't like this at all. If anything, a two-minute penalty during OT deters stupid play and keeps the flow going. If a guy knows he's only sitting for a minute, he might use stickwork. Plus a one-minute penalty can be killed with just about two clears of the puck.

Can someone explain the NHL's blackout rules to me? I admit I'm not a big hockey fan at all so I'll usually watch if there's nothing else on tv.

I live in Syracuse and have MSG and FSNY are my local sports packages (along with YES and the new Mets channel). But in the last couple of weeks, I've had Rangers and Devils games blacked out on me. You would think these days the NHL would want as many people to watch as they can.

i think the pens make a deal. They might not land a top 2 d or a 1-2 line player..but i think they add somebody. i don't think they get a goon.

It was reported that Pittsburgh had scouts Saturday night looking at Montreal defensemen Souray and Markov, as both are UFA's after this season.

Can you imagine a power play with Souray and Gonchar at the point? Pretty scary.

The hockey blackout restrictions make absolutely no sense. The Penguins are blacked out here in Harrisburg (even though the NY teams are physically closer and are not blacked out) on Center Ice and I can't even buy Fox Sports Pittsburgh even if I wanted to! Also, if someone can explain to me how this is Washington Capitals territory I would like to hear it. I've lived here for 12 years and I'm not sure I've ever seen a Capitals jersey or even a bumper sticker.

But the bottom line, said Dallas Stars GM Doug Armstrong, is allowing the stars to shine.

"You want to make sure that the star players have the ability to do their jobs," said Armstrong. "You look back in the late 80s and early 1990s with players like (Wayne) Gretzky and Pierre Turgeon and they were getting 150, 160 points on a regular basis there was probably a little more freedom a little more room there and we want to make sure that next generation of players always can have that ability too."
You can leave "probably" out, Doug. :)

If fans are wondering why more big names aren't being moved as we approach the trading deadline, especially when dealing with rental players, ANA's boss B. Burke summarized it best:

''There's no shame, they don't even wear a mask, they just come out and ask you for it,"

His comments are a response to the price tag other teams are asking the Ducks who have a nice core group of young players for a potential rental player.

I liked one of the other quotes Burke had to offer about things;
"The deals that have been put in front of me haven't been worth spending a lot of time on," said Burke. "They've been short, profanity-laced conversations. They ask for the same group of young guys and I'm not moving any of those guys for a rental (pending free agent).

A character win last night by the Canucks on the road against one of the better teams in the NHL today, the Ducks. It was a great game to watch, at one point during the third period there was non-stop, frantic end to end rush action at full speed on both sides for more than seven minutes before a whistle was blown.

That was great exciting action and they did it with their back up Dany Sabourin who plays an average of one game a month backing up R. Luongo, making the win even tastier.
