DSP 360 WE League Sign-Up Thread (Congrats Jared and Monaco)

Post by Zeppo »

First of all, congratulations to Jared and his AS Monaco side for winning the DSP WE League Championship in the seventh and final season on the Xbox version of WE9. Jared, who won the inaugural Championship with AS Roma, returned to the top with Monaco, a side with which he finished 3rd three times. St Cloud's Real Madrid finished 2nd in the First Division, while mobiggins's SS Lazio won the 2nd Division title.

At this point, the DSP WE League will move to the 360 version of WE07. We would like to invite any and all players interested in joining the league to sign up in this thread.

The First Division (the DSPremiership) will continue to have six teams, with XXXIV being promoted due to mobiggins unforunate exit from the league (he has no 360). Personally, I am very sad to see mo go, as he provided the original impetus behind the start of this league, and has been a stalwart member from the very beginning. It's always fun to play against him online, so here's hoping he finds a bag of money on the street and can get himself a 360  .

The other division(s) will have as close to six teams apiece as we can get, with eight being the absolute max size for any one division, and 5 being the minimum.

Team selection is done by a random draw. The teams in the game will be divided up into two Tiers; a Top Tier of the 15 or so very best teams in the game (teams such as Man U, Chelsea, Barçelona, Real Madrid, etc.), and a Second Tier, which will likely be all the rest (excepting perhaps the very bottom of the barrel). Those players in the DSPremiership will only be able to draw from the Second Tier, while those in the lower division(s) can choose whether they want to be drawn from the Second Tier or the Top Tier. A general rule of thumb that we use is that players who play offline games at 4* or 5* (or whatever good ol' Konami call them now) should opt in for the Second Tier draw, while those who play offline at 3* or less should feel free to go for a Top Tier team.

Right now, I am leaning towards wiping the slate clean and doing a new draw for the whole league, but I am not fully decided on that. Now that Chavanton is not with Monaco any more, for example, that team should be the garbage it was meant to be :D  .

So far, the projected DSPremiership is as follows:
  • JaredM -
    StCloud -
    RobVarak -
    Slumberland -
    CP Zeppo -
    XXXIV34 -
These players should sign up in this thread simply to confirm their continued participation in the league.

All other players interested in joining the league should also sign up in this thread, along with an indication of what tier of teams they would like to have a team drawn from, based on what skill level they play offline v. CPU.

I will post the two Tiers of teams here soon.

In this league, teams play the other teams in their dividion twice, once home, once away. Seasons are divided into two half-seasons, such that each team plays every other team in its division once in the first-half, and then plays the return match in the second half of the season. Each half-season is given a window of two weeks until its deadline, so each full season takes a month to complete. Deadlines are firm, but extensions are liberally granted if they are requested. Teams that do not complete their games by the deadline are subject to receive forfeit losses, but generally forfeits are only given at the completion of the full season unless a team has failed to play any games at all as of the half-season deadline. This deadline/forfeit system allows us to continue moving forward, even if members are unable to complete their games for whatever reason. Teams that fail to play games, and thus receive forfeits, are simply subject to relegation into a lower division, while the rest of the league is not punished by having to wait for others to finish games.

I will bump the official league thread soon, and I encourage all members to peruse the very first post of that thread which contains the basic league rules and game settings once I do so.

So, who's in?

I just bought the 360 version, and never joined a league with WE before. I'd like to be in, if possible. I'm really horrible at it, though.

Seriously, I've only played it a few times and I've never been into soccer for whatever reason. I played Zeppo a few times on the old XBox version and needed lessons. I just have no clue how to play, but I figure that's what the bottom division of a league is for, eh?

OK gang:

I'm going to post the Tiers here, but know that they are very unscientifically segregated, and these lists are up for negotiation and/or input.
  • Top Tier

    Arsenal
    Chelsea (London FC)
    Man U
    Liverpool (Merseyside Red)

    AC Milan
    Juventus
    Inter
    A.S. Roma

    Barcelona
    Real Madrid
    C. Atletico Madrid
    Villareal C.F.
    Valencia C.F.

    PSV Eindhoven

    Bayern Munich
    Benfica

    Second Tier

Charlton Athletic (South East London Reds)
    Everton (Merseyside Blue)
    West Ham Utd. (East London)
    Tottenham Hotspur (North East London*)
    Aston Villa (West Midlands Village)
    Blackburn Rovers (Lancashire)
    Bolton Wanderers (Middlebrook)
    Fulham (West London White)
    Manchester City FC (Man Blue)
    Middlesbrough (Teeside)
    Blackburn Rovers FC (Lanchashire Athletic)
    Newcastle Utd. FC (Tyneside*)

    Girondins de Bordeaux
    Olympique de Marseille
    AS Saint-Etienne Olympique Lyonnais
    AS Monaco
    Paris St.-Germain

    Ascoli
    Livorno
    Messina
    Siena
    Torino
    Udinese
    Chievo Verona
    Sampdoria
    Palermo*
    Fiorentina*
    Lazio*

    Ajax*
    Feyenoord

    Athletic Club
    R. Betis*
    R.C.D. Espanyol
    Levante U.D.
    R.C.D. Mallorca
    Sevilla F.C.
    R. Zaragoza

    Olympiacos Piraeus
    Sporting Lisbon
    Fenerbahce (Constanti)
    Galatasaray
    Boca Juniors (Patagonia)
    River Plate (Pampas)
I ended up using Newcastle and then Benfica to to divide the Top from the 2nd Tier, but some are still very close to each other across the divide. If I just went with the absolute best for the Top Tier, it would have been more like 9 or 10 teams in there, and if I got too liberal, we could have ended up with 25 teams in the Top Tier. It's really very tough.

Either way, there is a lot more variation among the 2nd Tier than the Top Tier, and perhaps too much. Again, if I got too discriminating, I would have ended up with only 20 or so teams in the 2nd Tier, and yet, some of the teams in this bottom group could have still made the cut. . . maybe:
  • 3rd Tier

    (Berkshire Blues)
    (Hertfordshire)
    (South Yorkshire)
    (Pompy)

    Le Mans UC 72
    Lille OSC
    AJ Auxerre
    RC Lens
    FC Lorient
    AS Nancy-Lorraine
    CS Sedan
    FC Sochaux
    Valenciennes FC
    OGC Nice
    FC Nantes-Atlantique
    Stade Rennais FC
    Toulouse FC
    ES Troyes AC

    Atalanta
    Catania
    Reggina
    Cagliari
    Empoli
    Parma

    ADO Den Haag
    AZ
    FC Groningen
    SC Heerenveen
    NAC Breda
    Roda JC
    Sparta Rotterdam
    N.E.C. Nijmegen
    Vitesse
    SBV Excelsior??
    Willem II?
    Heracles Almelo
    RKC Waalwijk
    FC Twente
    FC Utrecht

    R.C. Celta
    R.C. Deportivo la Coruña
    Getafe C.F.
    C. Gimnastic
    R.C. Recreativo de Huelva?
    C.A Osasuna
    R. Racing C.
    R. Sociedad

    (Bruxelles)
    F.C. Copenhagen
    (FC Belgium)
    (AC Czech)
    (Rosenborg BK)
    Djugardens IF
    Sao Paulo (Caopolo)
    Athenakos FC
    FC Porto
    (FC Bosphorus)
    Celtic
    Rangers
    Dynamo Kiev
There are some teams that clearly fit on the bottom of even this above group, and yet there are some that could argue their way into the 2nd Tier. I ended up using Sao Paulo to decide which teams deserved to be in Tier 2 and which should fall out of selection, but again it wasn't very scientific and several teams could go either way.

I'd love to hear some input about these groupings. At first, I thought perhaps this time I would open up the Second Tier to all teams but the very best, but there are a lot of teams. So, I then thought I would try to limit the diversity of the Second Tier teams, but ended up with too few teams.

So, perhaps it is best to have it as it is above. There will be some 2nd Tier teams that are clearly better than others, and actually the same holds try with the Top Tier as well. There is a very fine line between some teams in each tier, however; Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur in particular could easily fit in the Top Tier, and yet they are Newcastle and Tottenham and so it just didn't seem right! Also, I would love to have Reading (Berkshire Blues) and Heerenveen in the league, just so there could be more Yanks among the players, but they are clearly not as good as Sao Paulo, much less the teams that made the cut.

As a final word, I would say that last time I was just as confused and frustrated, and yet in the end it didn't seem to matter too much. Is that an argument for putting the 3rd Tier into the mix? Maybe. It certainly makes the case that the 3-round draw system is a good thing!

I'd like to join in, but I'm worried that my schedule is going to be hell in a couple weeks. How long of a window do you have to play the games?

I can't score a damn goal playing on regular right now, so sign me up for the lowest level possible.

So far, this is what we've got:
  • DSPremiership

    RobVarak =

    Slumberland =

    JaredM =

    CP Zeppo =

    StCloud =

    XXXIV34 =

    DSPenultimate

    Naples = (2nd Tier)

    Leebo33 = Top

    JackB1 = Top

    fanatic (crucialmike00) = Top

    Blublub (cecilbturlte) = Top

    Macca00 = 2nd

    3rd Division

    lsdean = Top

    Danimal66 = Top

    TCrouch = Top

    dave2eleven = top

    HOGZ TheTruth = Top

    snatex = Top
When placing players in the 2nd or 3rd divisions, preference has been given to those who have participated in the league in the past, and after that a random draw.

I will wait until Wednesday to begin the reandom team draw process, and see if we get any more players signing up.

The team draw is in three-rounds; once the first draw is done, players can choose to keep that team or reject it and opt in for round two. Again with the 2nd draw, players can choose to reject that team if they wish, but the third round of the draw is final, so if one opts in for round three, whatever he ends up with in that random draw is the team he will be stuck with for that season.

Players can opt to re-draw teams in between seasons. Players in the 1st division can only have a team drawn from the 2nd tier, while players in other divisions are fee to choose which tier they'd like to be drawn from (the rule of thumb again being one's offline difficulty level).

Awesome! OK, so Isles will go into Div. 2 and Macca will go into Div. 3, which will now have 7 players. Still room for more, as we can mix and match division sizes as needed. The only firm tradition is that the 1st Division is 6 teams. Outside of that, the divisions sizes are pretty maleable.

Also, I know no one is paying attention, but I trimmed the 2nd Tier of teams a bit, into this mess:
  • Second Tier

Charlton Athletic (South East London Reds)
    Everton (Merseyside Blue)
    West Ham Utd. (East London)
    Tottenham Hotspur (North East London*)
    Aston Villa (West Midlands Village)
    Blackburn Rovers (Lancashire)
    Bolton Wanderers (Middlebrook)
    Fulham (West London White)
    Manchester City FC (Man Blue)
    Blackburn Rovers FC (Lanchashire Athletic)
    Newcastle Utd. FC (Tyneside*)

    Girondins de Bordeaux
    AS Saint-Etienne
    Olympique Lyonnais
    AS Monaco
    Paris St.-Germain

    Livorno
    Siena
    Udinese
    Chievo Verona
    Sampdoria
    Palermo*
    Fiorentina*
    Lazio*

    Ajax*
    Feyenoord

    Athletic Club
    R. Betis*
    Levante U.D.
    Sevilla F.C.
    R. Zaragoza

    Olympiacos Piraeus
    Sporting Lisbon
I'm sure that to some degree, I myself am a little anglo-centric, but it does seem Konami is as well. Marseille fell out of the group, and sadly Boca and River also failed to make the cut. However, we still have 33 teams in this massive grouping, far more than we need with only 8 guys, and this is vs. the 16 teams in the Top Tier, where we now have 11 players shooting for those teams.

Anyway, 1st division guys and the other two in the 2nd Tier draw, I am wondering if you would prefer that I A.) trim the 2nd Tier more, to try to get rid of the lesser teams, B.) add more teams to that group, giving more variety and emotional interest (eg. more French teams, more Dutch teams, Boca, River, etc.), or C.) keep it as is and stop bugging everyone about all this  . I could also add some or all of the teams with asterisks into the Top Tier. It's pretty tough to parse this stuff just right only going by the overall 'shape' of each team, comparing them in the team selection area of an exhibition match. I do wish we could just have a big, fat ML online complete with player progression and acquisition possibilities. . . . (Is there even any hope for Sensible Soccer to have online MP career mode once it arrives on the XBLA?)

Any and all input is welcome.
