Good news. Hopefully they will make it easy to set up real rosters and teams. I can live without the exact stadiums if the game plays well. I hope the online leagues make their way back, too. A DSP Legends league could be a lot of fun.
It would also be great if they allowed player names to be displayed on the users end. A league could use the same set of roster names so it feels like you're playing with the real teams.
Another side benefit is it might push EA a little more. Madden was always at its best when it had competition.
As for the cryptic nature of the details, they may not want to reveal too much to the Madden team and are probably also still trying to see what player licenses they can get.

One thing that won't get out of my mind is how good this game could/should look. On the good old Xbox NFL2K5 was incredible looking. Imagine what it may look like on the 360/PS3
Of course the core gameplay needs to be solid but, at this point, I would take a direct port of the 2K5 gameplay with next gen graphics.

I wouldn't. I know a lot of people worship the digital ground that 2K5 walks on, and Madden has its own flaws, but the play by the safeties in 2K5 was ludicrous. The DB AI is widely recognized as suspect, yet kind of gets glossed over. If they "port" the 2K5 gameplay, I hope to God that they've spent the past 3 years tuning the defensive backs to act like they've played the game before. Everything else about the game was money for me, though.
I just don't know why I have to pound a button to sprint...I can never seem to do it as fast as the CPU can do it, taking some of that "control away from the player" that they rave about.

Seriously I wasn't a big fan os 2K5 either for the reasons you mentioned, but I have a good feeling about this. I'm just not sure what they are waiting for in terms of information. I highly doubt anything could be "stolen" this late in the dev cycle by Madden.
But they have had 3 years to plan this coming out, so I expected the next few months are going to be one hell of a ride.

Aside from NBA 2k7 and maybe CH, 2k sports games have been bug riddled messes. NFL 2k5 Franchise mode was terrible. The stat models were wacky.
I hope they allow users to edit everything. I hope they have some sort of season model. I don't want to play an NFL street/NBA jam type of season mode.

I was never able to do it either. I'd consistently get caught from behind on a play that should have been a touchdown.TCrouch wrote:I just don't know why I have to pound a button to sprint...I can never seem to do it as fast as the CPU can do it, taking some of that "control away from the player" that they rave about.
This news does excite me but I've been happy with Madden on the 360 and I'll freely admit that. I can't wait to see rippling jerseys too!
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.

I haven't played, or purchased, a football gaming title since NFL 2K5, and this game will definitely be my next.
For me, the very very casual football fan, the lack of real names, stadiums, and teams, is not a big deal - I really didn't know much about them at all anyway.
The level of customization is going to possibly the most interesting off-field aspect of this game, as is the implementation of on-line leagues. I would imagine that they would allow custom rosters to be used online, as you can already manage full leagues with existing 2K Sports titles (NHL 2K, at least).
Now that I'm thinking about it, it might be more difficult than I thought, because of the issues of MS certification and such. Allowing a user to upload their online roster to the league server might be seen as contravening the certification process, as all roster editing, etc., for NHL is done strictly to the file that resides on the 2K server and is simply edited and saved again.
I'm not sure what the certification process is for online content with Sony, but perhaps the PS3 could have an advantage here? Microsoft probably would not want to set precedents by allowing some developers more leeway than others, in the process undermining their own policies.

I just hope they get rid of the arcadey 'tap, tap, tap' track n' field speed burst, and the 'charged up' super-moves. Also, I hope they make the players controlable enough so that I can play a safety or a linebacker on D.
Oh yeah, and here's hoping they have officially retired the goofball comedy duo in the commentary, as well.

If I have to hear the "Vikings rowing a boat" comment again, I'm cutting off my ear and sending it to them.Zeppo wrote:Oh yeah, and here's hoping they have officially retired the goofball comedy duo in the commentary, as well.
I also agree they need to do more than polish 2k5. That game was a lot of fun but had a buttload of issues that others have pointed out.

I didn't have much trouble controlling the weakside or middle linebacker once I got the strafing technique down. I think those are by far the most fun positions to play on defense. You get to do so many different things from play to play while controlling those guys.
Anyway, what VC needs to do is add that "get skinny" animations for LBs and safeties like they already have for running backs. This is needed to help these players blitz more effectively since they'll be able to squeeze through cracks and creases opened up at the line of scrimmage.

Roster and team editing is a MUST, not just a nice to have.
And file sharing of those rosters must be made as easy as possible. Perhaps even file transfers within games so that when two people try to play each other online, one of them can shoot the roster file over before the game loads. If they want people to be able to use named rosters at least, with jerseys edited to look like the real thing, they have to make it easy for people to pass around these rosters, because you know EA and NFL will crack down on anyone trying to host them on a server for people to download.
They also need to let you do something sneaky like maybe download a JPG of NFL team logos and uniform colors and import them into the game easily to save as custom saveable files.
I don't think merely claiming to have better gameplay than Madden is going to get them far. They have to demonstrate that as well as enable what the NFL and NFLPA might consider violations of their intellectual property.
