Dismiss it all you want, but the technology and skill required to apply the label to the turd -not a stable base in and of itself- *while* it is flaming, is quite impressive. I mean the price is for the technology you receive, right? Not necessarily what you can do with it. It's an impressive product, and I'm sure the flaming-labled-turd killer aps are on the way.BigAl wrote:Sony could have built a flaming turd, slapped a PS3 label on it, and sold close to 1M units to their loyal base that will buy anything that says Sony on it.
PS3 Impressions Yes Another One....

Well for one thing, they're already claiming they shipped a million to Japan so now they're claiming 2 million.
So if they can't sell any more of the "flaming turd" then you'll probably be really happy with your X360 and Wii, right?
Gee you think a company which sold 200 million consoles in the past 10 years might have some kind of a plan on selling their new product? Maybe not another 100 million but did they just completely lose sight of what it takes to succeed in this market?

According to the NPD number they sold 680k in America by the end of the year, According to Sony they shipped 1 million units. Let say the NPD numbers are off a bit and they sold 100k more (which is a stretch IMO). That means 20% of their initial offering is sitting on shelves. I don't think Sony is patting themselves on the back with that number.wco81 wrote:I was talking about the sales rate.
Now of course you can say that maybe Sony didn't really ship a million, But that's a whople other can of worms
I don't find it unusal you're not seeing large supplies on shelves either. My local EB I shop at has 6 in stock and have had the same 6 for the last month according to the manager. There just isn't a need to get more stock in when you can't move what you have.
As of this second iTrackr shows of 28 retailers in my area, 28 of them have PS3's in stock. How many each has, I don't know. But I think it is amazing that I can easily get one if i want.
I guess we will just agree to disagree, I think these are not very good numbers at all in terms of sales for Sony. While I'm not prediciting doom (nor would I want it, we need the competition) for the future of Sony. I'm just saying this is a rocky start.

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Sony was exaggerating the numbers. But it was surprising that they announced 1 million (in North America) on the eve of CES, which was right before the second week of Jan and then announce 2 million (due to 1 million in Japan) about a week and a half later.
NPD doesn't include sales data for Wal Mart but I'm not sure if they try to model total retail sales using the data they do get as a sample. It also probably doesn't include sales data from Sony Style or Playstation stores, which had over 1000 units at launch while Best Buy stores had a few dozen at most.
It also doesn't include Canada or Mexico but these countries probably account for a fraction of the NA total. And of course, it doesn't include online sales, but online sales were pretty nonexistent in the first month to month and a half, other than costco.
But who knows, there could be several hundred thousand units in the retail channel. If that is the case, then retailers will stop taking shipments from Sony and Sony in turn will have to do something drastic, like a big price cut. MS cut Xbox price less than a year after launch. Sony did it about 16 months after PS2 launch in the US, IIRC.
We shalll see.

First Sony will never admit anything, nor would Microsoft.RandyM wrote:I guess the problem is - how long until Sony acknowledges that all is not joy in mudville and does something to address it. I wish they would. But the PSP mistakes have not made me optimistic that Sony will do anything beyond just denying there's a problem.
Second Sony is easily back in the game (if they are even out) if they are the first with a price cut. Yeah, MS may claim some kind of PR victory if Sony is forced to cut prices first, but Sony will sell a lot more consoles. The questions is does Sony have it in them to do it? I think there is the whole honor thing at stake, not to mention losing money on sales.
I said this 2 months ago, MS could have sealed the deal on this generation by doing a $100 price cut during theh holiday season. Then a premium 360 would have been only $50 more then a Wi. They probably would have doubled their sales numbers. But they didn't feel the need to do it.
The biggest road block of this new Gen is price, it doesn't matter which system it is.

From what I remember reading a couple weeks ago, the NPD data is meant to be the complete representation of US sales. They receive their information from approximately 60% of the retail channel (Wal-Mart is definitely not included--they share data with no one; not neisen, IRI either) and approximate the remaining 40%. From a statistical sampling perspective, it seems pretty solid to me--yeah, there's some room for error, but I don't think they'd miss by 100m on a 650m base.

Bingo. The PSP should have cleaned the floor with the DS.
But it's a mirror image of the Wii/PS3 thing. Cheaper vs. Do-Everything and more expensive.
PSP had a relatively good year last year after a fairly sad start. For a long time, the best game I could get for it was Lumines, and that was a launch title!
It'll be fun to see what Test Drive Unlimited is like on the PSP.
But wait, we digress from the thread topic...back to the PS3 hope express...

The problem is the lack of software sales. For the most part, games are not selling well at all on the PSP. I believe some of the launch titles sold well, but after that, the software sales have dropped off the map.ScoopBrady wrote:The PSP has sold 20 million worldwide in almost 2 years, I'm not sure if you can exactly call that a failure.
EDIT: My bad. Yeah, back to talking about the PS3.
Let's not forget about that wonderful UMD format!?!?!Gamecocks625 wrote:The problem is the lack of software sales. For the most part, games are not selling well at all on the PSP. The question that I keep wondering when I get the urge to look at the PS3, is why buy one now? There are really no exclusive titles out right now except for Resistance. Motorstorm looks impressive, but it's gotten luke warm reviews overseas. Wouldn't it just be better to wait until that killer exclusive app you can't live without hits store shelves? Might as well wait a few more days to hear gamers review to make sure it's not a another Perfect Dark Zero.
I don't know. I just don't see that "want" yet for me personally. Definitely not for $700 with a game and component cables. How much are Blu-Ray movies going for anyways?

Very interesting. If Sony is at all interested in the history of gaming they might wanna jump on the price cut route. I clearly recall SEGA refusing to make any price cuts on the Saturn. They just kept bundling more games, but would not for the life of them make a price cut. 349.99 for the Saturn was a lot to swallow, esspecially when the PSX was 50-100 cheaper.Second Sony is easily back in the game (if they are even out) if they are the first with a price cut. Do they not remember those days or what?

Well ive had my 20gig PS3 for a week or so and was digging it royaly so far .
The missing rumble feature wasnt that bad... until today...
I downloaded a demo for Gran turismo hd and having the DFP wheel was itching to try it out knowing full well i wouldnt get ff but then again i was hoping.
So i fired it up and oh boy if i was the GTHD team i would be pissed at sony for not having rumble ,ff, or anything, they dont even activate the centering spring , so the wheel basicaly just turns 1 way and then you have to turn it back the other a totaly senseless empty feeling , and cos it uses 360 degrees of wheel motion its almost impossible to steer the thing as you never know were your at on the turn due to the lack of force.
If you spin out you could be in full lock its realy hard to tell , untill you careen right back into the barriers lol.
This could hurt there sales somewhat dont you think?
I mean this wheel was made for the damn game after all.
Anyway just wanted to vent, i will not buy this game now as its only playable with a game pad.
Now im worried as one of the other reasons i picked up the system now is to play the F1 game, which while the demo was cool with the game pad (only option) i was hoping it would come alive with a wheel.
But if they cant activate the spring or 200 degrees of lock it'll be an excercise in frustration.
They have to patch this surely , sh!t ill chip in some dough for the licence for fucksake.
Im bummed out right now ,booooooooo Sony.

What's strange is that some people said some wheels worked with the 1.0 version of the demo.
Then they put out this 1.1 version.
As for sales being affeced, probably but some of these wheels cost several hundred dollars? There can't be that many people who spend that kind of money on a peripheral could there?

Well if htere are a thousand people with wheels and 2oo of them say bollocks to this , its 200 less copies all because the platform they chose is to cheap to buy the damn rights maybe polyohony shoulsd buy the rights to it.
I hear you tho, probably wont make a lick of difference. But i bet the amount of owners of a wheel is higher than you think.
I only have 4 of them myself.

You would think Sony made a cost-benefit decision in not paying Immersion.
MS paid like $25 million to license from Immersion and Sony would have had to pay more.
So that's a lot of copies of GT. But over the life of the PS3, they will sell tens of millions of copies of GT so Sony could easily pay for the license, IF they pay on similar terms to MS.
But MS apparently got an equity stake in Immersion so you get the sense that it would cost Sony way more than it cost MS, even accounting for PS2 vs. Xbox market shares.
The way Immersion tried to go directly to consumers to say Sony should pay them is sleazy.

I like my PS3...has lots of potential and I anticipate its growth but I still have not even bought a game for it. Anything out for it has been out for the 360 for a while and it runs better on the 360. The Show is the ONLY game I am anticipating and I hope its great. It would be nice to see ANYTHING about the PS3 version of The Show sometime soon.
