NHL 07-PSP

Post by 10spro »

Ok, Puckheads , here's some quick impressions on the PSP. Because of the portable limitations obviously the new control scheme doesn't take place here. In fact it's pretty much NHL 06.5 if you wish, with your circle button doing the slap shots on offense and the square for the snap shots.

It still doesn't have the speed burst which is a good thing, so using the poke control on D is key to stealing the puck from the CPU. Game modes include Dynasty mode, multiplayer, season, World Tornament and even a shoot out mini mode. It even includes a system link for those that have the PS2 and also different camera angles.

On default the camera angle is on broadcast but I switched it to the ICE one which I found I could read the plays better. Graphics are clear and good for the PSP, you can see the new sheet of ice after each period and player faces are somehow recognizable.

I played two games on medium being the Canucks vs Calgary. I found it a bit too easy so I will play a harder level next time. The CPU AI was hesitant at times and I scored 2 easy snap shots on Kiprusoff. And I picked them because I wanted to see how the goalies reacted, with both Luongo and Kipper (two among the best). I won both games, although they were close. The first one I came back from a 2-3 deficit with 45 seconds left, I pulled my goalie (select) and even scored the winning goal with 5 seconds left.

Realistic? Maybe not, but it's the new NHL, remember. I even had a fight and the controls are similar to last year's console. The game is definitely more on the arcade side, the rosters are OK, although my Canucks needed a few adjustements, like A. Carter who's no longer on the team.

It's a better product than Gretzky, it'll fix my boring moments at the airports from what I can see, but again it's just the same product as 06, well I would say 06.5 because of the many modes on a PSP.

Good, thats all I wanted to hear. As long as its better than Gretzky with a better control scheme, then count me in. The control scheme was the only reason I could not get used to Gretzky and there was no way to modify it.

Hate to tell you, but it does...the R flipper.

Well, if the R flipper does the speed burst I certainly didn't feel it, in fact I found the overall speed of the gameplay rather normal on medium level. One thing they haven't changed in comparison to the 360, is that they left J. Hughson doing the color narration whic is fine by me.

For $30 bucks, I couldn't resist.

Just played a couple of more games and although the speed burst is assigned to the right flipper, you can still control the gain that you want with the sliders settings. When I played my exhibitions, I had everything toned down at least 2-3 notches to the left from default, except the penalties.

I like the skating too, you can see even the swoosh of the ice, when a player makes a sharp turn or makes a sudden stop. I have to emphasize that the gameplay is geared more towards the arcade side, although when you play in the harder levels and adjust the sliders, the CPU can give you a run for your money.

Shots were realistic, on my last game (5 min each period), I had 24 shots while the CPU had 19. I had only one goal by a one timer, (I'd like to work for my goals) and it was nice to see a couple of slappers go in from the blue line while working on the PP.

Another good feature included in the game is the player editor and also you can create your own team.

Thanks for the impression. I really wish 2k7 would come out on PSP, but it is not going to happen so NHL07 is all I can hope for. Can you elaborate on the PS2 link, exactly what/how is it implemented?

It works like WE9 and Madden 07, if you start a season with the PS2 or franchise you can just share those modes with a USB cable with the PSP.

Is it true that the in game menu is severly limited? I heard you cannot adjust the camera, the settings, or even change (not pull) your goalie once you are in game. I was really looking forward to this game, but if this is true, this is a pretty big disappointment.

False. There's like four different camera angles, you can also adjust your settings but I am not sure whether you can control the goalie on your own as I haven't tried that.

Fry's has it on sale for $19.99.

There was no NHL from EA for the PSP last year....

OP says he pulled the goalie by hitting Select.

Yes, that correct, but he meant where he could change the goalie in the middle of a game. But you can pull the goalie with the game on the line by pressing select. But after reading his question, he meant can you change the keeper?

Yep, I meant can you change the starting goalie to the back up while in the middle of the game. 10spro, just one more question: can you see individual game stats (goals, assists) after the game is over? I read that you can't see these after playing a game.

Bad news fellas...seems Fry's ad regarding the PSP version of NHL 07 was misleading. They claim it was for the PC/PS2/XBox versions and not PSP. I hate it when companies use ads that are misleading and don't offer exact details as to what products their sales are referring to....

Drag66, I am pretty sure I saw the team numbers after my games, I didn't pay attention to the individual stats. The overall stats I saw, were faceoff won, shots on goal, etc.

The price of this is down to $29.99 at Best Buy plus I had a coupon so I picked it up. I'm very happy with the gameplay so far (the slow menus and load times are another matter). I actually may have too *few* shots with 10 minute periods using sliders Scoop posted in another thread.

I have two questions/concerns:

1. I started a season with the updated rosters for the Pens. In the first game everything was fine. In game two Malkin, Staal, etc. were replaced with the original "Placeholder 33" names and crappy ratings. WTF? My entire roster went back to the original file *after* I played a game fine with updated rosters.

2. The 3rd game of my season went to a shootout. EVERY player for the Rangers did not take a shot but rather picked up the puck, skated a little to the right, and then the whistle blew. VERY odd.

Has anyone seen this happen and if so is there a way to avoid it? I'm going to play again tonight.

Lee, no SO problems for me but the rosters' issue is an annoying one. I don't know when was the last update, but there are times when I have the latest update and when I pick up the next game, the rosters are no longer the updated ones, going back to default. Very odd, not all the time but it happens.

Still, is one of my favourite Sports game on the PSP.

I haven't played this game in awhile, but I'm glad to hear it wasn't me who was doing something wrong in getting the "Placeholder 33" names showing up in place of the updated rosters. I thought for sure it was something I did wrong.
