If this took place in the NFL, the entire country would be talking about it today. This is right up there with Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception." OK, it wasn't the playoffs, but that's how nuts this sequence was.
I'm still dumbfounded every time I watch it. Nice racks on the two girls shown celebrating right after the goal, too!

The Central Scouting Bureau releases a list of top prospects in November, updates them in January and then just before the Draft.
Last year, the final rankings had Erik Johnson No. 1 and Jordan Staal No. 2, just as they went in the draft a couple of weeks later, so these ratings usually are pretty good.
In the November ratings, Sam Gagner was rated as the No. 1 Ontario Hockey League (juniors) player, Angelo Esposito was rated No. 1 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Keaton Ellerby was No. 1 in the Western Hockey League (juniors).
Gagner was one of only two 2007 Draft-eligible players on the Canadian World Junior roster, the other being Karl Alzner. The rest of the players already have been drafted.
Chicago drafted Team Canada star forward Jonathan Toews in 2006, and Montreal drafted standout goalie Carey Price in 2005. The Rangers had three draft picks on this year's Team Canada roster, more than any other team.
Take care,
PK

As a fellow Flyers fan, I was asking myself the same question. The all-tournament team was named as follows;Feanor wrote:Is the likely #1 draft pick on the Canadian team?
Goalie: Carey Price, Canada, #5 pick 2005 draft, Canadiens
Defense:
*Erik Johnson, US, #1 pick 2006 draft, Blues
Kris Letang, Canada, #62 pick 2005 draft, Pens
Forwards:
*Alexei Cherepanov, Russia, DRAFT ELIGIBLE
Patrick Kane, US, DRAFT ELIGIBLE
Jonathon Toews, Canada, #3 pick 2006 draft, Hawks
Apparently this tourney was something of a coming out party for Cherepanov, who was named best individual forward as well. Check out this article on him published a few days ago; http://hockeysfuture.com/article.php?sid=9353
The latest ISS rankings as well; http://hockeysfuture.com/article.php?si ... ed&order=0With 28 games played so far in the Russian Superleague, he has19 points (10 goals, 9 assists), which is four points more than Alexander Ovechkin earned at the same age in 40 games. Evgeni Malkin (PIT) totalled 12 points at the age of 17 in 34 games.
The Blackhawks have a an absolute gem in J. Toews, he was in my view the MVP of the tournament although C. Price was solid throughout the game today and even better against team USA during the semis. The Habs have a solid backup in between the pipes for the future.
Another thriller between the Oils and 'Nucks, the game was tight and with less than 3 minutes to go, Sykora ties the game. A two on one rush in OT makes M. Cooke the hero in Vancity.
When someone asked R. Luongo when was the last time he won six games in a row, he said: "Juniors". Wow.

Remember, Luongo played for Florida until this season!
It's getting bad for Oil fans when you're looking more at Phoenix, Chicago and Columbus than the teams above in the Western Conference. Lowe needs to make a deal for defensemen -- QUICKLY!

PK, I was doing the same thing when the 'Nucks were at the bottom of the cellar, and all of the sudden you would see teams like CHI just behind your tail. PHO seems to be in a bit of a roll after dealing M. Comrie, LA is playing better, COL under Hitch is a different team, you name it.pk500 wrote:Remember, Luongo played for Florida until this season!

This is a tight conference and division as you know and in one week, positions can change just like that in a flash. Considering it was a back to back game from your Oils, I thought they played very well, the D inclusive, and there wasn't much room out there last night.

The Rogers Sportsnet telecast of the game last night showed that Vancouver was 8-0-1 this year in overtime entering last night's game, so the 'Nucks are now 9-0-1 in extra time.
Is that correct, James? I'm not a numbers guy, but that's something else!

I've become so accustomed over the last 15 years to the Oilers fighting for the eighth and final playoff spot until the last week of the season that this year is nothing new. In fact, if the Oil won the division or locked up the No. 5 or 6 spot with a week to go, it wouldn't feel like April to me!
I'm comforted with the knowledge that the Oil locked up the No. 8 spot in game No. 81 last year by beating San Jose. And then Edmonton went to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals. That was with Pronger and Spacek on the blue line, though!
Take care,

Paul, Canucks' numbers in OT are very impressive this season at 9-0-1, and I think only Dallas is the other team with a solid OT record. However the area I am most impressed is their PK. They rank second overall and first at home. But like you said, I am not too immersed into numbers, only the ones that count in the standings
.
Whether fans like him or not, EDM does miss C. Pronger a lot. He was great during PP's and that simple crisp first pass to the middle is missing from the D. Look, ANA has lost all the games since he's been out. I don't know if your Oils have a game with CAL soon but with Iggy out, this is the time to face the Flames. They are a completely different team without him. I agree that if the Oils need a trade, they better do it now, rather than later, usually after the All Stars, GM's work the phone more often and of course the price they ask for certain players, increase as well.
But in this day and age, with the new cap it's bit harder to maneuvre the numbers, so a blockbuster trade is more difficult to pull off. As long as teams like CHI, PHO, COL cool off a bit, that eight and final spot will be decided on the last week among any team in the NW.

That's a tough call. Pitkanen is a strong defenseman who could use a change of scenery, but he's on a one-year deal with Philly. So he could be a rental for the second half of the season. Giving up Lupul and Torres for a four-month player is too much.
I think Lupul is a one-trick pony with an unimpressive trick, as he can't do much but shoot. He's a lazy motherf*cker on defense and is a classic one-way player. But he does have the potential to score 35 to 40 goals in a season if he ever gets motivated. But I'm not sure if the Oil can wait to see if his motivation ever kicks in.
Plus you must consider the hometown factor with Lupul. Some guys who play in their hometown of Edmonton flourish, such as Pisani. Some guys can't handle it the pressure and demands, such as Comrie and apparently Lupul.
So a move might be best for Lupul and the Oilers.
But I'd hate to lose Raffi. He's a rare commodity on the Oilers -- a skilled forward who loves to play the body. Before this season, Raffi was Lupul with heart and more physical play -- he always looked to score goals first. But this year Raffi has become a better defensive player and is passing better, too. He's developing into a solid two-way player.
Plus I'd HATE to break up the Oil's most effective line of Pisani-Stoll-Torres. The Czechmate line of Hemsky-Sykora-Nedved is showing promise after two games, so that gives the Oil two solid lines.
Lupul never has fit in with any line this season, even more reason to deal him.
I would like to see Lupul, one of the Oilers' young forwards like Jacques or Pouliot and a second-round draft pick packaged for Pitkanen. That would be a deal I would accept.
Here's what I think the Oilers should dangle as trade bait for prospective suitors:
Lupul (Sucks. A one-way player whose one way isn't that good.)
Jacques (A lost lug.)
Pouliot (A lost lug.)
Winchester (A lost lug. Should be first to go among these big, wasted bodies since he's the oldest and the laziest.)
Horcoff (Pains me to say it as he works so hard, but Horc is dispensible as part of a deal to land a true elite defenseman. He's been mediocre at best this season.)
Petersen (He and Thoresen are interchangable, and Thoresen is better and 5 years younger.)
Deslauriers (Goalie who never has fulfilled promise. Dispensible since the Oil has Dubnyk on the farm.)
Take care,
PK

Your description of Lupul sounds like the forward version of Pitkanen. Joni is the most talented dman I've ever seen on the Flyers, and his play in the first half of last season was tremendous. Unfortunately he started having stomach problems and hasn't really come anywhere close to that level since. He has been extremely frustrating to watch this year. Also, he's still young though....I would think his he is still some years off from being a UFA or being in a position to command big dollars.
Deals in the NHL are tough. The cap severely limits large deals...or even deals where 1 player is making a high salary.
The comrie deal was an odd one. And if OTT needs another player...or decides to make some deals..they are screwed.
and now OK CITY, OK is after the Penguins....
surprised NORFOLK isn't throwing their hat in the ring again...They almost got the nod in the last round of expansion.

Darren Dregger is becoming the young version of B. Mackenzie on TSN and in his daily broadcast he discusses the gossips and other issues that this mad, crazy Hockey country enquires.
Whether the Pens end up in a US city or the Peg, or wherever, I just want a city that knows its Hockey and appreciate players like Crosby, Malkin, Staal etc. The Manitoba Moose (Canucks' baby team) have one of the best attendance in the AHL and fans are starving for an NHL franchise.
So if KC with the amazing state of the art stadium welcomes the Pens' new guns with open arms, good for Hockey, good for the city, but there's going to be a time when those young players will be traded and the team won't be as exciting, then what? Their experience in the 70's didn't go too well.

I'm not a stat guy, but Versus ran an interesting number about the Yotes last night. They are one of just six teams to sweep a road trip of five games or more in the last 20 years in the NHL.
If the Oil looks in its rear-view, a big, bad wolf is staring it down!
The All-Star Game will be exciting. But I'm pissed beyond belief that both days will be televised on Versus in the U.S. Versus! If there's ever a game to expose your skill players to the masses through NBC, it's the All-Star Game.
But it doesn't help that Bettman and his cast of geniuses scheduled the game for midweek, eliminating any chance of network TV in the U.S. What a melange of morons.
P.S.: At least the NHL got a kick-ass band for the All-Star concert in Dallas -- Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
Take care,
PK

When it comes to Hart Trophy voting, Chris Pronger better get VERY strong consideration. Anaheim has lost five of its last six games, coinciding with Pronger's absence due to a broken foot.
If that's not an indication of just how good and how valuable Pronger is, then I'm stumped.
Take care,
