So good you can't remember the name. Brian's Song

My top (in no particular order)

Rocky
Slapshot
Field of Dreams
Rudy
Raging Bull
Bull Durham
Hoosiers
Remember the Titans

and.....

Rocky Balboa- as a 35 year old, to see an appropriate finale to a series and a character who i have essentially grown up with was pretty emotional. And i'll admit it, i had a little water in my eyes at the end.

I've heard nothing but good things about the FINAL (hopefully) ROCKY movie (I still suspect his son will fight in 5 years) but haven't seen it yet. I'd run out tonight, but RallyMonkey's recommendation should be taken with a grain of salt - he's basically Sylvester Stallone without the steroids.

I never would have pictured Rally as an aging midget.

-Horse Feathers- Sure, a lot of people can't get past the primitive filmmaking techniques, but if you can deal with the Marx Bros. (as I can, duh!), it's a classic football movie!

-M*A*S*H- OK, so it's not technically all about football, but football is a central part of the whole thing, from the first time Hawkeye recognized Trapper John to the big game at the end. I still love Rudy till this day and get emotional after he quits and comes back with everybody clapping. I still can't believe nobody mentioned North Dallas Forty, the original playmakers.

Just bought some good baseball movies the other day :

61* - awesome movie. Great way they shot it, really feels like you're looking at 1961.

The Rookie - with Dennis Quaid. True Story also.

Eight Men Out - 1919 Black Sox

Pride of the Yankees - Gary Cooper classic, sort of corny at times, but still good. Even the real Babe acts in this one.

non baseball :

Caddyshack - still the best.

In addition to a lot of the movies here, I like Tin Cup a lot. Good dialog, funny performances, and an ending that is satisfying without being a sports movie cliche.

Ditto Inuyasha's list. I'd also mention Miracle as a great hockey movie.

Inuyasha and 34's list above are pretty comprehensive for my faves too, but I'd also add Cobb and The Program (yes, The Program's overwhelming MESSAGE is about as subtle as a John Rocker treatise on race relations, but I still enjoy it).

The Naked Gun deserves brief mention- if only for the baseball game scene (Enrico Polazzo!!) and the references to thinking about baseball to improve one's...stamina.

Ive enjoyed many of the movies already mentioned, but would also add Bang the Drum Slowly. Great performance by Deniro.

I saw Rocky Balboa last week and must say it was really good.

I'd have to add a few more that Ive enjoyed:

Without Limits (one of two movies about Steve Prefontaine to come out in the same summer. The other was Pre)

Varsity Blues (hey--it made me laugh)

Love Story (Cornell hockey Rules!!!!! Harvard sucks!!!)

For Love of the Game (I think thats the title..its actually a chick flick where Kevin Costner throws a perfect game for the Tigers...but I liked it)

Love and Basketball (as you can see..my wife watches these sports/romances and I get sucked in)

All the Right Moves (remember Tom Cruise the football player??)

Bad News Bears (the original)

Fast Break (with Gabe Kaplan)

One on One (a stupid movie with Robbie Benson that Ive watched twice in the past year on ESPN classic)

I'm sure I'll think of more.

A recommendation :

I rented Benchwarmers tonight and it is freaking halarious!

May not be a great sports movie, but it's a great 'stupid comedy' , especially if you're a baseball fan.

I stayed up way too late last night watching "This Sporting Life", Lindsey Anderson's 1963 film with a Rugby League backdrop.

There's not a lot of rugby action but what there is, is choice. The sport provides an undercurrent of violence and reinforces the class distinctions that are a major theme of the movie. Richard Harris is incredible as the working class footballer and the black and white cinematography is suitably gritty and bleak.

I'd definitely recommend it but it's tied with Raging Bull and The Slugger's Wife as the most depressing movie on this list.
