PS3 Impressions Yes Another One....

Put me down as one who still notices the lack of rumble in the controller.
Yuck!
Yeah...looking out at the release list for the next few months definitely has me worried a bit. I am honestly starting to become a tiny bit embarrassed that I own this system. As weird as that may sound, I am almost feeling like I just supported a complete and total debacle. The only saving grace is that I only had to pay $100 out of pocket for this thing. If I had shelled out $600 straight up I’d be completely embarrassed and pissed.
Yes, the system does have it’s strengths, but in the big picture I am not seeing anything that makes me excited that I own one (as a gaming machine). That’s NOT good. While I do like Resistance, I am extremely hard pressed to find a reason to turn this thing on other than to watch movies. Sad…
Of course I know I am looking at this from a launch 360 owners perspective so if I have held of on a 360 for the PS3 my tune would change slightly.

Ouch... so, I'm a high achiever.... 925 and counting...ScoopBrady wrote:You know, I never thought I would be as big a fan of the achievements as I am. I'm not an achievement whore like Fshguy (GameSeven wrote:Without a doubt, I'd miss the Live integration and Achievements![]()

I think they are dead. It's a shame, because they have become such a staple with games now.ScoopBrady wrote:They were supposed to. Now I'm unsure if they delayed it or nixed it altogether.RandyM wrote:Does the PS3 have "Achievements" like the 360? I definitely noticed the same thing playing Zelda last night!
At least the Wii keeps track of what games you've played, and Excitetruck has achievements on it's own.
Madden has Gamer Levels but I think that's specifically to do with your rankings for online games.
But after each game, they give you a number of points for various things you've done like how many points, how many sacks, how many ints., etc.
What do Achivements do, just have a running lifetime score? Or can you use them for something?
I remember one year, EA tried something like this for PC games, where you would accumulate some kinds of points and then be able to get custom avatars and other nonsense. I think it was the year they tried to charge for online play and these points and avatars were suppose to make up for it.
But they dropped both the charge and the avatars next year.

Lets just say that in my limited experience Sony's claims of delivering an online service having everything Live had and more was typical Sony BS.RandyM wrote:Does the PS3 have "Achievements" like the 360? I definitely noticed the same thing playing Zelda last night!
But no they don't as of yet. I think background downloading is a more important feature to have at this point anyway.

So it sounds like a scheme to get you to spend more time on XBL, which is why the MS guy talks about "stickieness."BigAl wrote:Nerd Cred:wco81 wrote:What do Achivements do, just have a running lifetime score? Or can you use them for something?

Can you only get achievements while playing online or can you get it with a Silver account too?
Most rewards programs, like the frequent flyer miles program which the article refers to, effectively lower the price of the products they're encouraging you to consume.
I thought maybe you could trade achievements to buy XBL Marketplace points and get free downloads or discounts on them.
That would be a more interesting idea.
I agree but they don't have that much to download right now.Danimal wrote:Lets just say that in my limited experience Sony's claims of delivering an online service having everything Live had and more was typical Sony BS.RandyM wrote:Does the PS3 have "Achievements" like the 360? One thing XBL appears to have are 3rd-party demos including EA game demos. Sony doesn't have that. Only thing that is third-party is the Ridge Racer demo and the Tekken 5 Resurrection game but those are only available in the Japan and Hong Kong stores.
They don't 'do' anything. For me, they let me see what games a person has played, and what he's done in that game, such as has he played this game only online, or how much of the single player has he played, and such. If I am trying to get a room going in some shooter, for example, and spamming folks with invites, sometimes I'll check to see if they have the game (sometimes!) by looking at their achievements. Or if a random dude shoots me a friend invite, I can check out what kinds of games he likes to play.wco81 wrote: What do Achivements do, just have a running lifetime score? They also provide a little tug of motivation to play through certain games that I would otherwise give up on. I've noticed for some others, they take this part of it way too seriously, but even for me, and I really don't care about comparing acheivements for bragging's sake, they do push me to finish some things I wouldn't otherwise do. A good example of this is Tomb Raider: Legend, which I had from gamefly. I had played through the first half or so before getting sidetracked by a flood of good sports games, and months went by without me really touching it. Before I sent it back, though, I decided 'what the heck, I'll finish the story off and get those achievements,' and I'm really glad I did because I enjoyed that game quite a bit. I would probably never have finished the game if it weren't for those empty achievement slots staring at me.
What's interesting is that I was totally blazé about the concept until I played my 360 and realized that they do add some subtle motivation for me to keep playing some games I enjoy, but may not always choose to play over other, newer, 'shinier' games with that 'new game smell.' That is, they help me to get more value and fun out of games I might otherwise let slip past me. Others have different experiences, which is part of what makes the whole thing interesting to me.
But to answer your question, they don't 'do' anything, they just sit there like a bump on a log.
I am with Zep. Points mean nothing to me, and the current achievement points albeit is nice, it's just an incentive for gamers to finish a particular game if they haven't yet done so. So if I am playing Tiger Woods and I am pretty much stuck at a particular handicup and people tell me that a certain ball, shaft, club promises that I can improve my game further more, then it just gives me that extra motive to so, while at the same time getting a few more points. But so what? In the end, it's the game that I am interest in improving, not counting my points.

I dont picture anyone counting sitting there counting the points...but , as Zep pointed out, it is kinda cool to see what everyone on your friends list is playing and how much they are playing it....
As others have said it is just an extra kick when you get the message that you have unlocked an achievment..
Well, since this beast fell in my lap just after Christmas (belated gift from parents) I have been doing some research about its capabilities. So far I love the Blu Ray DVD functionality. I watched "World Trade Center" and "Superman Returns" and its impressive. As far as games...they look the same as the 360 to me...and that is not unexpected or disappointing.
I just watched a video of Sony's keynote address from the CES in Vegas today an heard a very interesting tidbit. Right now the connectivity of the PSP to the PS3 is very limited. However, evidently in the near future you are going to be able to access all of the media that you have stored on your PS3 by using your PSP - anywhere. As long as you are near an internet hotspot you can watch stored videos, music, etc. Pretty cool stuff. As you were.

Pretty amazing technology if you ask me.

Well, count me as another owner of the PS3 bunch. Counting on cash gifts that we received over the holidays and a tolerant wife
, there was a lonely PS3 staring at me today at London drugs.
I looked at the games' section and the only thing that I was interested was "Resistance". The setup went rather smoothly and the interface was very familiar to me since I also have the PSP. Downloaded the latest firmware which took about 8 minutes and I also managed to download and play GT. The graphics of the game was awesome and the control of the car for a 1st person view was really good as well. The controller surely feels light without the rumble function.
Also tried to see if there was any difference between the "Taladega Nights" on Blu-ray and my other HD movie and frankly I can't see any difference on my TV set.
I have a 1st generation Bravia which supports 1080i and not 1080P and my video settings and game were set up for 1080i. Although some people believe 720P is the way to go, I couldn't see any difference if any.
For those that own a PS3 at what resolution do you guys have it set up? Obviously if you have a 1080P set, you would set it there, but if not, are you going for 720P or 1080i? I know that everyone has a different TV, LCD, plasma, width etc.
I haven't play "Resistance" yet, but I am looking forward to the game. I know there's only a few of you that have the PS3 but let me know if your gamertags are the same as in DSP.
Mine is the same as the 360: xeneixe.

The thing I got my Dad is called Location Free TV from Sony. It looks like a cable modem that plugs into the back of your tv/sat/dvd, etc., and once you download the newest firmwhere for psp, it connects wirelessly to the Location Free base station and picks up the feed. My guess is that Sony will be making tv shows available to download and watch on the PSP if they aren't doing that already, so I couldn't recommend going out and buying one of those Location Free boxes. But it works like a champ, and in my Dad's case it's perfect because it allows him in theory to take it down in his gameroom, out on the patio, etc. I think the range is supposed to be something like 100 feet or so, and when I tried it in various places throughout the house and out on the patio, the signal was good.10spro wrote:How does the TV satellite exactly work on the PSP? Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I thought some might be interested to see the latest comments posted by one of The Show's developers over at OS:
