Best Buy replacement plans

Post by Feanor »

In June 2005 my wife bought a DS from Best Buy for $150 with a 2-year replacement plan that cost an extra $20. As of tonight, the bottom of the touch screen doesn't work properly anymore. She tried to drag an item in Animal Crossing from an item slot at the bottom of the screen and it refused to register.

So I was wondering if you guys had any experience taking back a console with a replacement plan to Best Buy (or similar stores). Should we expect them just to hand over a $150 gift card, or will they actually take the thing in for repairs?

They will just replace it with a new one.

You will also get a DS Lite, unless they actually miraculously have some original DSs and the guys are assholes. My friend just went through a similar ordeal.

Yes, my iPod went bad and I got a video one for a replacement.

Do you have a screen protector on your DS? I did and that was the cause of the bottom screen not working. Peel it off and it works like a charm.

Oh cool, a DS Lite. :)

No screen protector, but I have been playing a lot of Ouendan in the last two months. I haven't scratched the screen, but it has taken a bit of a pounding, especially with the songs on Hard mode.

I did some more testing and the dead spot on the touch screen is the little DS icon at the bottom of the main menu screen. I can tap it over and over but there's no response, so I have to use the D-pad to get into the Settings menu.

A friend of mine had a minor problem with his DS, and BB simply gave him a new one on the spot. Go for it. You'll enjoy the Lite.

Assuming they have any in stock. Those things are hard to find right now, I've heard.

We went to Best Buy today and showed them how the touch screen wasn't working properly. The guy went away to get an old style DS, but since they didn't have any he gave us a black DS Lite and a new 2-year replacement plan to make up the $150 total. :) A few hours later I heard that they were sold out of them again.

On the down side, I won't be playing Ouendan again for a while for fear of doing any damage to my wife's shiny new DS. I'll get my own one eventually which I can hammer away on and do the last two songs on Hard difficulty; maybe when they go down to $100.

You might have to wait awhile, man! No reason for Nintendo to drop the price when the DS Lite was the No. 1-selling gaming machine in the United States in November. I haven't seen December numbers yet.

Take care,

Come on Pk. You can't keep comparing the DS Lite to the $400 and $600 consoles. That's just not a fair comparison in terms of dollar value. Of course parents are going to be more reluctant buying Timmy a 360 or PS3 when the DS Lite is a third of the cost. Comapre it to the PSP if anything.
