I never played any martyr card, that's your act. The facts are I made an effort to avoid conflict with *you*, and you got mad because you couldn't stand it. Which makes your tired crybaby act that you are an innocent victim of my attacks sound even more full of s*** than it already is.DivotMaker wrote:Got mad? About what? You? ROFLMAO. Good one.Kazuya wrote:This is so damn funny... I ignored this guy for months, didn't say a word to him... He got mad when I wouldn't acknowledge him and kept trying to start s*** with me by talking to me (how sad is it when you are bugging someone who won't even speak to you). I finally ask Scoop if he can nicely relay the message to please stop trying to start trouble with me, but apparently his mad-on knows no bounds and he just had to keep it up despite Scoop's request.
Yes, those personal attacks and offensive rebuttals in Sony's defense were so peaceful......keep playing that martyr card though...someone, someday, is bound to buy your act.Kazuya wrote:Bleah... at least I gave peace a chance...

You know, I shouldn't have to keep my eye on this damn thread during the holidays when I'm trying to enjoy time with my family but I guess that's too much to ask. This is getting ridiculous guys. Divot and Kaz, you two are no longer allowed to post in PS3-related threads until further notice. If you do you will be banned. I'm not taking sides in this and don't want to hear arguments about it. It takes water and freezing temperatures to make ice fellas it won't get made without either one.
Everyone else, keep this thread civil or it will be locked yet again.

How about we keep this to a PS3 impressions thread for those of us who have actually played the damn thing? I think we all have read enough of the media bashing reviews. And I agree with Pk. Enough of the b.s.
This is for the most part a f'n videogame hobby website. Sure, the political threads can get a little heated, but to fight like kids because one person prefers a console over another one is ludicrous. Why in the heck do we have to resort to name calling, degrading others, and the like? It's gone a little bit over board and that's being generous.

I actually resisted the urge to pick up a PS3 tonight.
My Best Buy was loaded with the 60 gig versions. There's just nothing compelling on it right now, especially with 360 games basically looking identical.
There were a hefty amount of 360s available too.
DS Lites were sold out, as were PSPs and Wiis.

A few updated random thoughts on the PS3 for me...
- GT Demo is neat but has a long way to go before it will "wow!" me. Graphics are decent, driving model is pure GT and the interface is well done. I like all of the online options and uploading for just a demo. Pretty neat.
- Blu-Ray player continues to impress.
- The main menu interface continues to confuse. While it is sure slick looking and nicely laid out, it sure is hard to navigate and find stuff. I had a SD card that I loaded to watch some pictures with my family and could not get the damn thing to show the pictures for the life of me. After a half an our of searching through the manual and online I gave up. Then the next day I somehow figured out to push the triangle button to choose "Display All" and then they all pop up!?!?! Frustrating.
- No custom soundtracks or background music. While I rarely use this feature, I cannot believe the PS3 does not support this?!?! Just to test, I loaded a folder of music via an SD card and the transfered it to the PS3 hard drive. I was actually trying to put music on there to play while watching a photo slideshow. Once I loaded it, You can play it under the music tab menu, but that's it. You cannot back out into the main interface or other areas (like photos) and have the music continue!?!? Idiotic!!!
- No iPod support.
- A VERY cool photo slide show feature called "Photo Album". It is a very cool way to watch your slide show with dates and times of pictures scrolling by with the pictures being displayed like photos in a picture book.
- Really digging the online Resistance modes and their Halo-esque
"Party System".
- Keep reading more reviews about 360 ports that have horrible frame rates on the PS3 (Blazing Angels seems to be the latest victim). This worries me. Can anyone explain why this is occurring?
- Got the DVD remote and it is very nice. Solid and nicely laid out.
I keep trying to love this system but they keep shooting themselves in the foot in so many areas. Right now I would say I am at a luke warm "like" with the gaming aspect and a "puppylove" mode with it as a Blu-Ray player.

Judging mainly by my web reading on the architecture of the PS3, I'd say it has to do with the design choices made there by Sony and the effect it has on multiplatform titles.Keep reading more reviews about 360 ports that have horrible frame rates on the PS3 (Blazing Angels seems to be the latest victim). If a title is originally developed for the 360 and optimized for a particular CPU and graphics chip, porting to another one may cause problems if there are limitations on resources that were taken for granted on the 360. My understanding is that the 360's graphics chips have an edge in terms of memory and the unified shader architecture, and the PS3 has its parallel cell architecture which is going to take some time for developers to figure out how best to use.
That's why I've predicted that multiplatform titles on the PS3 are mostly going to be at best the same as the Xbox 360 version. Where the PS3 is going to shine is on system exclusives like the GT series where the entire graphics engine and calculations are optimized for the particular chip architecture in the box.
I think the invisible component to this and one that few people appreciate is the difference in the toolsets in terms of development. Sony would have had to develop compilers and tools specifically for this console. Microsoft had to supply....Visual Studio

When The Playstation one came out, it was VERY developer friendly, versus the Sega Saturn, which was a nightmare. Some people say the Saturn was actually more powerful, in theory, but no one could figure out how to squeeze the performance out of it and the tools were lacking. Not so much the case on Playstation.
Then Nintendo came out with its N64 and the same thing happened to them. Microsoft entered the fray with a very 'friendly' environment and toolset, using the good ole Intel chips and nVidia graphics, along DirectX, to make it quite easy to develop the software and spend time on optimizations, rather than just getting things running decently.
The PS3 is really new so I expect that there's going to be a lot more growing pains, and you'll see some improvement, but I don't think multiplatform games are ever going to be noticeably better on it than the 360. It's the exclusives and blu-ray that should sell the PS3, not the ports.

I think Randy is pretty spot on here. I think it's likely that as developers get a better grasp on the particulars of PS3 development that the gap will narrow but it's common sense that titles that originate for one of the platforms will likely suffer in some respect when ported to the other. I'd be particularly curious of those titles that are ported in the other direction like Assassin's Creed and DMC4 (if, in fact, the latter becomes available for the 360). Like last generation, it will be the exclusives that sell people on the respective systems...RandyM wrote:Judging mainly by my web reading on the architecture of the PS3, I'd say it has to do with the design choices made there by Sony and the effect it has on multiplatform titles.
Interesting...when I plug my iPod in to the front USB inputs it says it's connected on my iPod but I cannot see any indication that it is working or registering on the PS3 at all. Even after going to music and trying to hit the triangle button. Nothing is there to hit the triangle button on (if that makes sense).backbreaker wrote:PS3 does support the ipod, just like any USB device, you have to press the triangle and a pop up menu states to display all and you can play your songs from there, when you are in the Music menu.

Here's a How to's I made for the PS3. I posted them on Ops sports.
http://forums.operationsports.com/vBull ... ost2813279
IPOD directions for downloading from IPOD at first glance it was stated you couldn't do it, but I found away.
IPOD
1: Plug you Ipod into your PS3.
2: Go to the music section and scroll down to USB Device (Ipod)
3: Press triangle then click displays all.
4: Click Ipod Central then waits a second until you see music.
5: Press Music then you will see F00 proceeding by F01 and onward.
6: Now click F00 and you will see a list of songs.
7: Now scroll over the song you wish to download and click triangle.
8: Now a menu will come up. Press copy.
9: Now your song will download to your PS3. This should take less then 3 seconds.
10: Now press circle and proceed to do the same for the rest of the songs you wish to download.
11: When done click circle until you are back at the main music section.
12: Disconnect your Ipod and you will see all of the song listed by albums.
The only thing that sucks about doing it this way is that you can only download one song at a time, which can take a while if you have 500 songs like me. I bet Sony did this on purpose so that you wouldn’t take up your whole hard drive if you have a 30 gb Video like me. You can speed it up by downloading the whole folder or multiple songs from the same folder.
For example: While scrolling over F00 or any other folder press triangle then click copy and it should download everything in that folder or (my favorite) while scrolled over a song in the folder press triangle and then press up. You should see (copy multiple). Click it and select the songs you wish to download from that folder then click (OK). You should be good to go.
If you want to download your videos all you have to do if follow these same directions. Even direction #'s 4 and 5. (You have to click music) wierd I know. When you go into the folder and select the video watch it to make sure you know which video it is first. With mine the names were all messed up.
If you wish you can sort everything by artist. To do this you must scroll over one of the albums (any one) then click triangle and press up. You should be scrolled over (Group Content) if you are then press right and click which option you choose to search your music under. Press X and you should be good to go. The same should be good for videos. Except it should say (sort by) instead.
If you wish to edit the information that the song/video has posted then scroll over the song you wish to edit then click triangle then scroll down till you see (information). Click it and scroll down each item and press X to edit that information.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a happy Delphi developer and I do .net development with it as well.bdunn13 wrote:I for one would not call that a positive. What I'm saying is that it's a constant/familiar easy to get going with environment that's been pretty well debugged for most things. When you have a well documented API and an easy-to-use toolset, you free developers to think of different things.
I may not be a VS.NET fan, but I can concede some things without too much agony

No reason for Sony to support the iPod when they're trying to sell their own MP3 players.
But if they allowed people to develop little freeware apps, it might be possible. After all, there are tons of free Windows and Mac apps. which let you parse what's on an iPod and transfer at will.
Maybe you have to use Linux but it's not clear if you can access the XMB part of the drive when you're in Linux.

On the contrary, huge reason for Sony to support Apple as the ipod is the choice of MP3 player for many folks around the world, even though they have their own product. At least make it compatible as it seems to be, although they may not advertise it.wco81 wrote:No reason for Sony to support the iPod when they're trying to sell their own MP3 players.
It shouldn't be surprising at this point that most of the third-party games were developed for the X360.
Few third parties have the resources to justify using all the cores in the Cell. EA might but they're not really known for pushing the envelope of technology.
Sony has to help with the tech support to third parties. They are funding some exclusives which use the power of the hardware. If they're smart, they'll share some of that technology, although future consoles from all parties will probably use the multiple-core design of the Cell, so they'd be helping developers prepare to support future designs from competitors.
In the near term, they could do something like give financial incentives to provide more content for the PS3 version of a multiplatform game using the higher capacity of the Blu-Ray disc. A key target should be GTA. They should just pay for some exclusive content on the PS3 version.

Well for the X360, it's suppose to be DLC.
But didn't Epic say the DLC for Gears of War would all be free? So it may be up to the developers more than MS or Sony.
Epic with it's PC gaming heritage is probably more into supporting the loyal community.
Not sure what TakeTwo will do but every time a GTA game comes out, they're under big Wall Street scrutiny to make blowout numbers.
Anyways, it would be smart if they included that exclusive content on the Blu-Ray disc as well as offer downloads.

Spent some time at a buddy's place and got some time with his PS3. Impressions from the games/demos:
NFS Carbon - looked cleaner than the 360 version, but the game isn't my cup of tea. I'm a fan of the more classic NFS games
Motorstorm - yes it's beautiful looking, but the gameplay didn't look too fun for me; reminded me of some of the DC Midway racers which served me well in 1999-2001, but not now
GT HD - honestly not impressed with the gameplay (no surprise there) or the graphics. The graphics were no where near as clean as Motorstorm and honestly seemed somewhere between GT4 on the PS2 and a 360 game
Resistance - looked very clean but not my type of shooter
F1 - biggest disappointment; the gameplay was too arcade-like even with the assists off and the graphics were nowhere near the videos we've seen. F1 was probably the only game that would have me bite at the PS3 and it didn't deliver
He also had GoW for the 360. I honestly don't see what the fuss is about.
Glad I got to see the PS3 in action as it definitely cooled my already cool desire to get one.

Well, I had a bomb of sorts dropped on me today...a PS3 (60 GB)
. My parents got it for me for Christmas. It didn't arrive in time for Christmas so they gave it to me today. TOTALLY unexpected. I'm guessing my brother recommended it. They know I game so they figured it would be a nice gift. No doubt it is a very nice gift so I am very pleased with it...I just wasn't planning on getting one anytime soon so the thought of getting one never really entered my mind. Oh well, worse things could happen
. I guess I have some research to do on the system. I'm interested in the PS3<-->PSP connectivity. I am in the process of hooking it up to my setup so I'll post some impressions later. I'll say this, it is a very slick looking piece of equipment. Jesus, I have so many forms of technology in my home
.
