Yeah, that made big time contact on the front straight. After seeing the onboard-cam from Nicky's bike, I was shocked that one of them didn't go down right there. I guess Rossi felt victim to a poor setup or tire choice, that's the only thing I can think of.

As for best races of the year, that's a mighty fine list you've got. I'd have to give the Ring my #1 vote with that front pack battling it out and all racing towards the finish line coming up the hill after the final left turn.

Absolutely sick car control shown by Italian WRC driver Gigi Galli in the handbrake turn in this YouTube video:

Gigi is a real showman. The most sideways driver in the WRC, and he's funnier than hell. The series needs him in a full-time ride.

Take care,

This will eventually fall into the "Racing 2007" category, but I think I'm heading down to Daytona to check out the Rolex 24 this year. Has anyone else ever been to that race or have any suggestions for hotels in the area or a race-watching strategy?

Figure we'll rent a minivan or "premium" car so we can just catch a few Zs in the infield during the race.

The beer, Red Bull, and coffee will be flowing, that's for sure!

When we went down for the compatibility test, we stayed at the Hilton Ocean Walk Village on the beach. Was about 10 minutes from the track and gives you some non-track options. A bunch of folks I know stay at the Bahama House and recommend it, you may want to look into that.

Never been to the 24, but my Grand Am buddies want me to come down for the weekend. What I'd do is the start from the inside Fan Walk and then move around the facility as best as allowed to watch the action in the West Horseshoe or even the International Horseshoe -- the grandstand is pretty unless you like watching the tri-oval.

The fan walk area at DIS was pretty impressive, you can get right up to the garages and watch what's going on. You can also overlook pit lane, have video boards to see parts of the track that you may not be able to see etc...

Hope that helps, some...

Man, I would love to check out the 24 some time. I'm hoping that if I make it to the Glen this year I'll be able to get into the garage area since "I know a guy"...

Well, I ended up booking at a cheaper hotel than those options, Neck, but I appreciate the suggestions. Haven't been to Daytona Beach since I was a kid; from the reviews, a lot of places seem to be pretty run down. Kind of crossing my fingers and hoping the place I picked isn't too bad.

Will definitely have to check out the Fan Walk area. Definitely have plenty of time to check out just about every imaginable viewing area at the track as long as I bring my walking shoes.

Should be an interesting weekend, that's for sure, I'm really looking forward to marking this off of my "races to see" list with my old man.

RIP Clay Regazzoni
Former Grand Prix driver Clay Regazzoni was killed in a car crash in Italy today. He was 67 years old.

Gianclaudio Giuseppe Regazzoni, who gave the Williams team their first Grand Prix win in 1979, made his Formula One debut in the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix, as Ferrari handed him the second seat alongside Jacky Ickx.

Clay got in touch with Bernie Ecclestone, for at Monza the then Brabham team owner had offered an attractive contract for 1977. Now, when they met at Heathrow, Bernie was in more of a buyer's market. "He asked me how much I wanted, and I mentioned his offer at Monza. Now it was less than half. It was too late to join another big team, and for sure he thought I would agree. I said it wasn't even worth talking about, and got the next flight back to Switzerland. It wasn't the money that was so important. I like to race with nice people..."
I remember the horrible crash at Long Beach that ended his F1 career, but it did not end his racing career and his love for the sport.
