Game of the Year?

Game of the Year?
It's about that time. What has been your favorite game of the year, sports and/or otherwise? (All my picks are for the 360.)
My Sports Game of the Year- NHL 07
There are undoubtedly more realistic simulations out there, but at the end of the day I simply had more fun with NHL 07 than any other sports game released. It's the first hockey game since the days of the Genesis where I can sit there and knock off six or seven games in one sitting, then wonder where the time has gone. The control scheme is incredibly simple and intuitive, and it should become the standard for the sport. The game looks superb, and the wide variety of scoring options ensure that the gameplay stays fresh. The goalie animations are simply the best ever seen in a hockey game.
Runner up- NBA 2K7
A really, really solid title. Gets docked simply because it's just about impossible to guard a human player in multiplayer play, but that's more a flaw of basketball games in general than this one in particular. The single-player game is very deep, as teams and individual players are accurately modeled. It requires less tweaking than any other game- if you want an accurate NBA game, all you really need to do is up the quarter length. 2K has consistently outshone EA when it comes to their online experience, and it's much easier to get a lag-free game regardless of where your opponent is located.
Honorable mention- NCAA 07, FIFA 07
The reality is that I liked most of the games released for the 360, and they all see a fair amount of playing time. NCAA has its flaws, but it's a solid entry point for the franchise, and FIFA is both beautiful and a blast to play. (Honestly, it gets more PT than NBA 2K7 does.)
Non-sports game of the year: Gears of War
Nothing else comes close.

Sports Game:
NHL07 - This gets 80% of my current 360 gaming time. If they can build on this for next year, I may never leave the house again
Non Sports:
G.O.W. - Another one that never disappoints. Always a blast...single or multi
Honorable Mention: FEAR & Rainbow Vegas. FEAR's AI is some of the best I have ever seen in a video game...they seem human. Rainbow is a great time online with DSPers. If the graphics were slightly better and the clipping issues went away, it would be tough to decide between this and GOW.

Sports Game of the Year -- Rugby 06 (EA Sports).
The most organic, non-scripted, intuitive, enjoyable sports gaming experience I've had in a long, long time, if not ever. It provided me triple-digit hours of compelling, competitive gaming delight this year on the Xbox, and that's WITHOUT online play. No other sports game was close.
Non-Sports Game of the Year -- Clubhouse Games (Nintendo).
This is crack on a cartridge. Forty-two different games, online play, super-intuitive yet very challenging. This game never gets dull because of the wide variety of games available, and it's both pick-up-and-play and long-term fun on the Nintendo DS Lite.
Take care,
PK

Sports -- NBA 2k7 (360). For the reasons seanmac mentioned. Great graphics, really solid gameplay, and an all-around terrific representation of the sport.
Runner up -- Front Office Football 2007 (PC). Who would have thought watching text play-by-play could be so much fun? A great, insanely deep football management sim.
Non-sports -- Gears of War (360). Just too much damn fun, both single- and multi-player. The offline game has great atmosphere and pretty sharp AI on the Hardcore level. Multiplayer finds that sweet spot between Halo and Ghost Recon, combining squad strategy with fast-paced action.
Runner up -- Dead Rising (360). Would maybe be my G.O.T.Y. if it wasn't for the annoying save system. Great concept, awesome execution (pun intended).

Both on PS2.
1st - NCAA 2007 - The most fun I have ever had with a football game. I have one complaint with it. One. For a sports game, that is unbelievable. (Kick return camera angle)
Close runner-up - MLB The Show - The most baseball I have ever played. I had a summer weekend ritual. Wake up before the rest of the house, drink my coffee and play a 1 1/2 hour game of baseball. Wonderful.

Sports: NHL 07. Far from a great game, far from a deep game, and I don't love the way EA does graphics. But the most fun sports game I have played this year. It is a great pick up and play game. But it was not an overall great year for sports games on the 360.
Non sports: Oblivion. So much fun that i picked it up again as a rental to play through once more. The ultimate first person sandbox. While some of the NPCs were bland, some were quite interesting and fun. And the Dark Brotherhood stuff was top notch.

I've only bought a few sports titles all year. Bought and still need to play Rugby 06, just got NHL07 for the 360 Sunday. The only ones I bought and played this year have been TOCA and Madden for the PSP and Moto GP for the 360. Of those, I'd have to say TOCA for the PSP takes top honors. Was an incredible game on the Xbox and it's a near exact duplicate on the PSP. Nothing better than TOCA in the palms of your hands.
Non-sports? GRAW for the 360.

Sports game: NCAA 07 (360)
There may be better games our there but i've played it more than any of them. I have NBA 2k7 and have barely touched it. COuldn't get into NHL 07. I'm not much a football fan but this game had me coming back for a while.
Non-Sports game Multiplayer: GOW enough said
Non-Sports game Single player: Company of Heroes. I haven't finished this one yet but it's great. It has renewed my interest in WWII based games and RTS in general. I haven't enjoyed a RTS game this much since the original command and conquer.
Honorable mention: Dead Rising

Sports: Rugby 06 - the only game I felt bad about giving up when I dumped the Xbox. However, Wii Sports is surprising me with it's depth and playability. There is a lot more under the hood then I thought.
Non-Sports: Zelda: Twilight Princess. Of course, I sold my Xbox in the spring and only have the Wii. Limits the options a tad, but the latest Zelda may be the greatest Zelda.

Best Sports Game of the Year - NCAA Football 07 (XBOX) - Better IMO than any of the next-gen console football titles. Just amazing how varied, realistic, fluid, intelligent and engaging the gameplay is. With minor slider tweaks, QBs are no longer pinpoint accurate - overthrows, underthrows, throws into the dirt - providing the requisite number of incompletions instead of using drops and CPU defensive backs with superhuman powers. AND the sliders actually work. The only downside is that the return cameras DO suck, and Jump The Snap should be able to be turned off, but neither of these severely impact gameplay. Really enjoyed NCAA on the 360 also, but the money plays really started to force me to use "house rules" more often than I'd ideally like.
Runner-Up - WE 9 - Never was able to get into the WE series until this year. Don't know why, really. I must have put in 100 international exhibition friendlies during the World Cup this year.
Best Game of the Year (Non-Sports) - Oblivion. What everyone else said above. Played through it once on the 360, starting again on the PC with some mods to clean up some of the minor issues I had with the game. I don't even want to speculate how much time I spent with this title already. I thought NWN 2 was going to be my choice for RPG of the year, until I actually played through it and found it fairly dull and linear when compared to Oblivion. Won't go into much more about NWN2 - Bill Abner's review of NWN2, while largely positive, is pretty spot-on about the strengths and weaknesses of the game.
Runner-Up - CivCity:Rome. Developers at FireFly just released a patch for the many bugs that shipped with this game at initial pressing, and the game is now a SERIOUS time-eater for me. If you're even remotely interested in city builders, give this one a look on the cheap via Ebay and grab the patch.

Best Sports game I played this year was Wii Sports.
There were a couple of others I enjoyed quite a bit but I'm a bit biased and will keep my mouth shut.
