The system has been on the market for a year and was outsold in November by two handhelds (DS and GameBoy Advance), a 6-year-old console (PS2) and a low-tech next-gen console (Wii).
All of which are significantly cheaper, price is whats going to slow down the sales of next gen systems. I love the Wi, but it's not next-gen and $250 is a whole lot easier to swallow then 400-600 dollars.
Right now they have 8 million 360 sold worldwide and somewhere between 2-3 million Live subscribers. I wouldn't call that too shaby. While none of that makes them the guranteed main player this go around. for a company who has been in the console business less then a decade, they are doing pretty good IMO.

True, but the numbers that were impressive in the last generation are dulled a bit by the overall growth numbers of the industry.
For example, selling 6 million machines was an incredible number in 2000. Now it's decent, because so many more people are gaming than five or six years ago.
Microsoft is a solid player in the industry, no doubt. But December sales will tell the tale. If Microsoft doesn't gain a ton of traction with the 360 this holiday season, with the shortages of the PS3 and Wii at retail, it will have a very hard time supplanting Sony or Nintendo as the main player in gaming this generation.
I just can't believe how Nintendo has it going right now. Everything it's touching is golden, from the Wii to the DS. Feels like 1989 all over again.
Take care,
PK

I haven't read through all of this, so if this has already been brought up I do apologize.
I just read that Sony shipped just 175K units for the US launch. This is a pretty big dip from the promoted 400K. Think the investor's might be a little miffed if those numbers are in fact true? How about 3rd party software developers?
Look, I don't and really don't care (other than the interest in reading up on what's going down) who comes out on top. I have what I enjoy and that's all that matters.
However, if these numbers are true I think someobody needs to serve up Sony a nice hearty platter of crow. They scoffed at MS's "debacle" of a worldwide launch. They made it a point to state that they would have ps3's much more readily avaialbe upon their launch.
Funny how things really turn out. Again, this is all based on whether or not those numbers are in fact true. I don't know how reliable the source was so it's all speculation.

It doesn't matter, sony's chief spoin doctor is already at it, making more promises they can't keep. From next-Gen
In a statement sent to Next-Gen from SCEA, communications boss David Karraker said that Sony is sticking to its previously announced North American launch targets. “While initial day-one launch shipment goals weren’t achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3s in the pipeline by December 31, 2006," Karraker said.

It's not really an excuse, I'm sure there are manufacturing issues. But the way he just says launch day numbers were not achieveable so matter of fact. I didn't see them saying this the day before launch, you telling me they didn't know they wouldn't hit that number weeks before launch.
