Sony's Kenny K removed

Post by pk500 »

PlayStation godfather Ken Kuturagi was removed from day-to-day power in the PlayStation division today, replaced by Kaz Hirai. He now is in some sort of CEO/board role.

Trouble in paradise at Sony?

*EDITED* adjusting to pk's edit

Regardless, this should make a lot of people in here happy... time for a celebratory dance:

The move is not at all surprising based on Sony's recent performance and their PS3 delayed "launch" if that is what you want to call it. I have a feeling there is alot more to their management shakeup still to come....

Why would this make anyone here happy? Are you so hellbent on the fact that if some of us take Sony to task and criticize their actions AND decisions that we would celebrate ANY bad news? Just stop. Seriously.

This is a badly needed move by Sony as KK pretty much promised the moon with the PS3 from E3 to now and has NOT delivered. Had PS3 actually launched a) on time and b)actually launched instead of burping out a couple hundred thousand systems, maybe KK would still be in position. This is a good move by Sony, so I don't know why you insist on carrying the persecution torch here at DSP for Sony....

Sony should just shove a sock in Ken's mouth, that would be the wisest move.

My edit was to properly reflect Kuturagi's new role, not to add invective. He wasn't fired as I originally thought; he was moved out of day-to-day control.

I don't even own a console, so why the hell do you sense partisanship from this post?

I have owned consoles from Mattel, Nintendo, Sony, Sega and Microsoft in the past. In fact, I have purchased two consoles from only one company -- Sony. So I'm doing no jig. I could care less, but it is a major news story in the console world, no?

If Peter Moore or Robbie Bach were demoted at MS or Reggie Fils-Aime was neutered at the Big N and it wasn't on this board, I would have made almost the identical post.

You're becoming one of Pavlov's dogs regarding Sony corporate issues and news. If anyone writes anything in the forum regarding Sony, factual, false, positive or negative, your response is almost as immediate as saliva trickling from the gums of one of the Russian's canines.

Take care,

What the hell are you talking about? I edited because you edited your Enquirer style headline to what it should have read in the first place, so I no longer felt it was necessary to have my comments on there talking about it. For someone who is so hyper-critical of journalism in general, I found your original post to be amusing at best. I figured since very few people probably saw your original post, there was no need to make a big deal out of it. In the future, I will be sure to give you the embarrassment that you apparently crave.

You really think this was a demotion?

I just read on another site about various firmware update changes KK approved, to improve the media features of the PS3.

Hirai is a marketer/business man.

KK is the technologist and will no doubt be involved in the cost-reductions from die shrinks, future features.

Also spearheading PS4 design.

My original post was in error, and I corrected it. A mea culpa is hard for you to comprehend because we know you've never been wrong about a thing in your entire gilded DSP life. Or at least you've never admitted it, because that's embarrassing, right?

I don't consider self-correction -- which I did with this post -- to be an embarrassment. I consider it to be honest and necessary. My original post may have been amusing to you, but it was wrong, so I fixed it.

Your response still doesn't touch the fact that you rushed to this post with some sort of comment about celebrations among the DSP faithful because of a perceived slip at Sony. If that's not a recurring pattern here, then I guess Diana Ross was the greatest white female Motown singer of all time.

Don Quixote had windmills; you have the anti-Sony agenda at DSP. Everybody has a sword to parry.

Swing on.

Oh crap, I think Ken just said that PS4's chip design will disrupt the space-time continuum thus allowing real-time wireless net-play with ancient Chinese emperors on a game of Dynasty Warriors 75.

Sorry to see one of your close relatives lose his job so publicly.

He is a close relative, right?

I can't imagine why the hell else every niggling criticism of Sony seems to have the same effect on you as a nuclear-powered colonoscopy.

I couldn't care less; there are predictable faces on both sides of the debate that everyone knows by now. Had your original post looked as it does now, then I wouldn't have even posted a reply since this is a non-story to me. When your edit came out, I chose to "let it go" and delete what I had wrote. I guess I should have deleted the entire post, since it no longer makes sense, but I was trying to do it quickly since there were no replies besides mine at that point and I was hoping no one had seen either of our posts. I was trying to avoid a conflict and do *you* a favor, but of course that will be forgotten in the next round of Sony wars when someone reports that a PS3 in North Dakota ships with a frayed power cord. Whatever... just don't blame me for your Weekly Midnight Star headlines. I made that post *before* your edit... so consider it null and void and no longer applicable.

No, that's the effect of your attempts at "humor". He's the one that made the mistake, not me.

The point remains valid. And the only humorous thing at this point is your hypersensitivity.

I'm sure that many of us are waiting for you to figure out a way to brand the sick Wiggles thread as anti-Sony.

Yes. Or a "putting out to pasture." If everything was peachy, then why would this move be made?

The story even suggests that the move was made because the PSP isn't selling as well as Sony wants and because the PS3 launched with fewer numbers than Sony intended.

Plus Kenny never met a microphone he didn't like, and maybe Sony wants to tone down the rhetoric. Flash and trash isn't the Japanese style of business, I don't think.

It will be interesting to see more reports on this. I bet Takahashi at the Mercury-News will have more in-depth information.

Interesting times, no doubt.

The blessing of *your* favor is a lovely gesture, but I really don't need it, as if it was the stamp of DSP imprimatur or a nice DSP Quality Control sticker on my expansive ass.

I made a mistake; I corrected it. Not the first time, not the last. Nobody uses the edit button more than me at this place, something I will continue to do.

Indeed, I made a mistake by saying Kenny K was canned. He wasn't; he was reassigned.

But the "trouble in paradise" line hasn't change from my original post on the topic, and I'm sure that shot your Sony sensitivity meter upward just as much as my incorrect "Kenny K canned" headline.

And I stand by that "trouble in paradise" line. When the head of a division is moved right after the launch of a console, I sense that as a problem in the ranks, not a promotion or a planned lateral move. That would be the case whether it happened at Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo.

But it happened at Sony. That's a fact, not an anti-Sony hyper-agenda fanned by the fuel of rhetoric. So there's no need for any celebratory jig.

Take care,
PK

This is a great move by Sony IMO. Kenny has basically been making an ass of himself and the company as the figurehead. There's no doubt the man is smart and can bring the technology but he was horrible at selling his product. Kaz will hopefully bring something that Sony has been missing for a while now, class.

You seem to thrive on conflict, especially when anyone posts anything about your beloved Sony that you disagree with. You go a step further in some cases by making your responses unnecessarily personal. Then you play the martyr card when Scoop or Jared asks you to tone it down. One day you might come to the conclusion that you are NOT going to have it both ways here. Once you figure this out, your contributions here at DSP will more than likely be much more appreciated and respected.

Lastly, DSP is certainly not out of the norm these days when it comes to internet forums discussing Sony and the PS3 "launch". I have personally never seen so much anger, disgust, and disappointment associated with the Sony name in all my years as a consumer. You might want to keep that in mind before your next response resembling a Ken K. damage-control press release.
