Question about guitar hero 1 or 2

Post by laurenskye »

I'm thinking about getting this for my brother inlaw on PS2. He's a very accomplished guiter player.

Would he have fun and not be bored with this?

This has come up before, see here for more input:

To recap what I said then, I play guitar very well and I think it's great fun. However, I do know a few guitarists who sort of sneer at the game as child's silliness. So it depends on this person's attitude about such things.

my uncle plays guitar and kind of laughed when I told him about this. Once he played it, he went out and bought both 1 and 2 and is loving it.

He said its a lot harder then playing a real guitar LOL. I would say get 2 and if he likes it he can pick up 1 (game only) for around 30 bucks. If he doesnt like I am sure it will be easy to unload on ebay. Hell I would buy it at a discounted ebay price just for a 2nd guitar :)

I've played guitar since I was 8yrs old (now in my mid-30's). I don't own a PS2 anymore (sold it when Xbox came out) but everytime I see Guitar Hero at Sam's Club, Walmart, Best Buy, etc... I always have to stop and play a few tunes on the hardest skill level.

That said, you're not playing guitar with this game, and it's not going to teach you much either other than keeping time. Basically, you're holding buttons and flicking a toggle switch when the game tells you to, in beat with the song playing. Although it it sounds simple, it IS alot of fun and very addictive, even for people who can play a real guitar. On the easier skill levels, it's the equivalent of playing the bass guitar with one string. On the harder levels it gets a little trickier and you need to think much much faster.

If he's not one of the dwindling few that believe videogames are only for children, and understands this is a music game (and not supposed to be any substitute for playing a guitar), then he will love it.

More than any other game I own, GH is even loved by people who aren't accustomed to playing games.

I also play guitar and agree it doesnt matter. Its totally different. More of a rythym and timing game than making music like you do when you actually play guitar.

My main problem with the game is that you are so focused on following the notes on the screen, that you really dont notice everything else going on. Where is the replay mode so you can watch what you just did? That would have been a nice extra.

I played GH for the first time over Thanksgiving with my brother. He's been playing guitar for 8 years and loves both games. It's still challenging for him on expert.

As long as you recognize it for what it is -- a game -- I think even serious musicians can enjoy it. The presentation is great, the hard levels are definitely challenging, and the song list is really varied.

anyone know if there is a way to just let the song play out without the guitar parts playing? That way, if u really play guitar, you could jam along with the song. I think the song stops if you miss too many notes in a row, but I wonder if there is a mode that just plays out the music?

Face-Off mode does not penalize you by not playing and will not end the song since it is just a competition mode between 2 players.

That's cool. Guitar players can play along for real and use the game as a kind of "karaoke (spell?) for guitar", as a little bonus game.

Are any of the songs dont by the original artists or are they all covers?

The Primus and Janes Addiciton songs are done by the original artists. I think all others (in both 1 & 2) are covers. All of the "bonus songs" are the original artists though.

Anyone here able to beat "Hanger 18" on Expert and have any suggestions? I keeping getting shut down at 67%. It gets too crazy. I only have that and "Freebird" left for my Expert career.
