Badgun hasn't replied yet, so I'll add my 2 cents worth.
Definitely sell it. Even though I am against that practice, I got to check out the PS3 first hand last night for the first time, and I wasn't impressed. Sell the PS3, enjoy a great vacation with your family, and pick another one up in March if you want.

I sold 2 today and only made 500 bucks or so after expenses... not what I had hoped for but its still free money... I did not wait in line at all.dbdynsty25 wrote:I said sell it yesterday...now I say keep it. You're only going to make like 500 to 1000 at the most now. At 2gs...it's a no brainer, now it's a little more difficult. If you do decide to sell it...I'd say wait a few weeks till the herd has thinned a bit on ebay.
this article makes some good points about why the PS3 isnt worth the money right now

Sadly, I could not agree more with the article as it is right on the money....JackB1 wrote:this article makes some good points about why the PS3 isnt worth the money right now

Hope this isn't the start of an all-too-familiar trend now with the PS3....

I don't know if anyone is picking up on this but this may be the worst launch of a major console. Like the 360, we won't know if they shipped out enough. But compared to the 360, there was a lot of hype generated by those that have the console. I remember DSP a buzz with COD impressions. Most there were impressions of the console which created a lot of hype in the cyber-world.
With the PS3 because everyone is trying to make a buck, there's little to no impressions coming from the cyber-world. I find that shocking that because the PS3 is commanding a generous profit on Ebay there's no word-of-mouth hype.
The limited launch tactic might have finally nipped Sony and the PS3. Instead of creating hype it's made it so few have actually played the system. Sony going to need a good 2007 to keep up with the 360.

Not sure what you're talking about, there's plenty of talk when you get off this board and the Internet in general. I was at a house warming party last night, mostly late 20s-30s professionals, and there was a lot of talk about both the PS3 and the Wii. If I went by that one party alone, I would think that the 360 didn't exist at all. I did talk to one guy about Viva Pinata a bit at the end of the night, but other than that M$ was a no-show in the discussion.JRod wrote:I don't know if anyone is picking up on this but this may be the worst launch of a major console. I went to a party and we all talked about was Atari and Collecovision. No mention of Intellivision at all.Kazuya wrote:Not sure what you're talking about, there's plenty of talk when you get off this board and the Internet in general. You are right though everyone on the street is talking about Sony...about how f***ed up launch has been.
No one talked about the launch, outside of the eBay phenomenon. I suspect the general population is unaware of how many units are available, just that the unit is in demand and unavailable.XXXIV wrote:I went to a party and we all talked about was Atari and Collecovision. If you are saying the general population is stupid...Ill buy that.Kazuya wrote:No one talked about the launch, outside of the eBay phenomenon. Not at all, I just don't think the general population is aware of "console launch difficulties". Things have been selling out and being unavailable in huge quantities since Cabbage Patch dolls, and consumers are familiar with mad item rushes for things like gadgets and toys. While someone who scours the Internet 24/7 knows that Sony has cut the launch units a ridiculous amount of times, most people just know that the console is sold out. Now if the things start failing in massive quantities like the 360 did, I think that will register. Even then, I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about the 360 launch in real life either.XXXIV wrote: If you are saying the general population is stupid...Ill buy that.

Great points...Cant argue with any of them...but ...I still think the people that post here are realKazuya wrote:Not at all, I just don't think the general population is aware of "console launch difficulties". Yeah, I missed my opportunity. There's 36,000 units on Ebay now so no way I'm tossing mine in there. I'm just going to sit on it a few weeks and see what happens when they dry up. Once these initial launch units get swallowed up, it will be interesting to see if there's a real demand for the PS3. I'm guessing there won't be. Wonder how Sony feels knowing that 25% of the people that bought their new console didn't even want it?dbdynsty25 wrote:I said sell it yesterday...now I say keep it. I'm going to wait now since there is nothing I really feel the urge to play on the PS3. Got my Wii last night and I've been having a blast with it...hadn't really given much thought to the PS3.
Not much they can do to stop it.. You can do the same thing on almost any device these days(and could for years).Dave wrote:Was just catching on some blogs and noticed some posts about using Linux emulators to play old 8- and 16-bit games.
Anyone think Sony could be getting some nasty calls from Nintendo and/or Sega lawyers if they don't do anything to stop it?
I have played Mario(as well as tons of other games) on my pc, ipaq, and xbox.

F*ck! I am starting to regret shelling out that $5,200 I bought mine for on eBay.webdanzer wrote:NYtimes has some impressions:

After reading the NY Times article, I wonder if it is fair to compare the PS3 to the 360 after a year or should it be compared to the 360 when it first came out?
For instance, the 360 did not have background downloads until the first big console software update around Memorial Day. (5 months after release)
On the other hand, I guess you are comparing what you can get today if you make the choice now - although MS has had a year to work out the kinks to a certain extent.
A few other things that i don't know about - for instance is there a way to connect your PS3 to a VGA monitor? Is the initial setup really as time consuming as I have been reading - where you have to do setup with composite plugged in and then switch plugs to component? How long are load times? Has anyone compared the load times for COD3 on both systems? Quiet is nice, but does BluRay at 2X take longer to load? And how is the PS3 for HD movies? Anyone compare it to a stand alone BluRay? How does backward compatibility work - is it pretty seamless?
I have to say, after walking into Burger King and getting a Double Whopper, fries, Coke and a Xbox 360 game (Sneak King) for under $10.00, that Sony has a battle on their hands. Why get a PS3 when you can got to BK and not only get a 360 game but a delicious and healthy meal to boot?
As I wolfed down my double Whopper and looked over the box containing the Sneak King game, I thought about how trivial the loss of the last rain forests due to over grazing beef cattle really is when compared to getting a great video game with your burger and fries.

To be fair, the 360 didn't allow you to download in the background until the spring update. Everything else, though, is not good. I'm hoping these things will be addressed by the summer but the wireless base stations is just plain sad. This guy pretty much summed up everything that makes me a happy 360 owner and the reason I was surprisingly underwhelmed with the PS3's launch.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

You can read some PS3 impressions at AVS, especially the Blu-Ray functionality.
It's said to load faster than standalone players, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
Of course it's ridiculous to judge PS3 at launch and try to extrapolate what it will do over its lifetime.
We've heard about the lousy launch lineup before. It was back in 2000, when the PS2 had a weak lineup and people, especially many here, said the DC games looked better and doubted the PS2 would ever better the DC.
But I guess those people want to eat more crow.
Oh and now the big thing is, weak attach ratio. It was bad in 1999-2000, especially in Japan because a lot of people over there got it for DVD playback initially. MS boasted of much better attach ratio when the Xbox launched with forced bundling. Gradually the attach ratio swung way in the PS2's favor.
History may or may not repeat. But what is silly is to make judgements now after a console has just launched. We aren't even a full week into the PS3's launch in the US.
Lets hold off on the PS3 post-mortems for a little while?
