In Real Madrid's final game of the first leg, the Spanish Armada traveled to England to face Arsenal. This was the fifth meeting of the two teams in the DSP league. Real Madrid had yet to beat the Gunners until tonight. Real scored their first victory over Arsenal 3-1, in what was a thriller!
Arsenal launched into a full scale attack at the start of the game, racking up 7 shots in the first 20 minutes with Henry finally breaking through with a lw shot deep in the corner. After the goal, Real settled down and was able to build up an attack and after a foul just outside the box, Beckham nailed a beautiful free kick from 21m. Ronaldo 4 minutes later put in a strike from 30m to put Real up, and they went into half up 2-1. Portillo closed the game out with lovely strike inside the 18.

Man City Draw To Newcastle On The Road
Newcastle Utd. FC 1 : 1 Manchester City FC
Man City travelled to Newcastle to take on the former Champions and survived an early Shearer strike to come away with a draw behind a second half goal from Vassel.
Shearer's goal came early, in the 10th minute, off of a corner kick. The old man found himself all alone about 12yds from the goal line and acrobatically scissor kicked the approaching corner and whipped it into the far side netting. The move sent gasps of disbelief and wonder throughout the crowd. It was a classic goal, I only wish there were a way to save highlights.
Man City settled in after conceding the goal. James, starting for the first time this season, made several good saves in the first half to keep the contest close, and City created a few chances off the counter. In the second half, a slight adjustment of tactics paid off for Man City. Discarding the counter attack game, City looked to keep posession and work it around, hoping to break down the Newcastle defense. In the 54th minute, Vassel ended a nice move outside the box with a right footed blast from 20yd that gave Given no chance. The rest of the way the game was a battle in the midfield, with a few chances for each side. Michael Owen in particular had a frustrating day, never able to find enough space for a clean shot, and sending several crosses wayward. Ameobi came on in the late going, and had at least one sure sitter from about 8yd that he sent wide of the target.
Newcastle 1 : 1 Man City
Newc.:Shearer 10'
M. City: Vassel 54'
SoG 25 : 15
SoT 12 : 5
Corners 6 : 2
Fouls 7 : 1
Offside 0 : 0
Poss. 47 : 53
Good game, Rob, as per usual. These are real battles these days, since we play so often and know our teams so well. I had good arrows for this game, with no starters really hurting except Mussampa. I do wish we had a replay of that Shearer goal, that was wicked! (Of course, I also want a replay of that venemous, 30-meter, half-volley dipper from Trezuguet a while ago in our Brazil challenge! That's still the only time I've really nailed that just-before-it-hits-the-ground dipper.) I think I lucked out with you keeping Ameobi on the bench, even with that blue arrow.
Good luck the rest of the way, and I'll see you in the 2nd half!

Match Report
Villareal 0 Newcastle 7
SOG 9, 22
Target 5, 11
FK 7, 4
Cor 2, 6
Posses 51, 49
Scoring
Newcastle: Shearer (14', 47', 54'), Owen 36', Emre (38', 86'), Ameobi 58'
No bookings or injuries

Newcastle bounced back from its home draw against Man City with a resounding defeat of newly-promoted Villareal. The Spaniards ran into a buzzsaw, as the Geordie side were in scintillating form. The match opened in cagey fashion with both sides making only tentative approaches. In the 14th minute, Owen latched onto a Dyer through ball and fed a beautiful short cross to an unmarked Shearer. The captain headed home the goal. With that the Magpies were off. The old timer Shearer garnered himself a hat trick, but all of the attacking players were in fine form.
It was a measure of the breaks which came Newcastle's way that in the 86th minute, a rebound fell to Emre nearly 35 yards out and on the touch line. His cross found the Spanish keeper off his line and rattled into the side netting for his second goal of the day. It was simply one of those games.
Slumber, tough luck running into a very in-form Shearer, Owen and Given. Your best chances came early, and I suspect that when we meet again they may be converted. Good luck.

Crap! I hope we didn't get our time zones confused. I meant 10:30 Central. I see you were on around 9:30 my time, 10:30 Eastern. I'll be around for awhile. If it's too late, my apologies for not being clearer. I've gotten lazy with timezones, as I tend to know where people are now. We'll do it again soon.

Manchester City FC 2 : 1 Fulham FC
The orange ball was broken out yesterday, as Man City snuck past a game Fulham side amidst a snow storm at home, thanks to first half goals from Andy Cole and Musampa. Substitute Helguson brought the visitors to within one goal in the second half, but despite their best efforts, they could not find the equalizer.
Cole's goal in the 16th minute was a vicious right-footed volley into the side netting off of a corner kick. Sibierski was in the best position to strike the ball with his head, but a nudge from the defender caused him to lose his balance, and as luck would have it, Cole was positioned perfectly to strike the ball when it was about 2 feet of the ground. The ball never rose as it rocketed into the side netting, leaving the Fulham keeper and the onlookers stunned and surprised.
In the 41st minute, Musampa took advantage of Fulham pushing up on a corner kick of their own. The left winger received the ball fifteen yards into his own half, and while Cole and Sibierski kept the central defenders occupied, he waltzed all the way down the wing and into the box. One touch toward the center to draw the defenders, and then a quick turbo towards the line to tee it up, and his left footed blast from 8yd and a tight angle made it past the keeper and found the netting.
The second half was all Fulham. The visitors sent everything into the attack, and City could not take advantage on any counters. In the late going, McBride was taken off for Helguson, and it didn't take long for the change to have an impact. His first touch of the game was a header from inside the box, and suddenly the City lead was halved. City's defense started to crack, and openings started appearing all over the field. Davind James, however, was superb in goal, turning aside 9 shots. In the end, there just wasn't enough time for Fulham to break them down once more, and City emerged from the snowy pitch still unbeaten after three league games.

Good game, squid. I don't know what to tell you, but that lag is the worst I've seen since Mo fixed whatever was wrong with his situation. And what's weird is that I've played you before, and didn't have any issues. At least we got through the game this time! That second half was nuts, and I am so thankful I got that second goal in the first half. I really needed it!
Good luck the rest of the way.
Speaking of Mo. . . .
A reminder, folks, that the first half deadline is this Sunday, Nov. 19. I know Jared can't get any games in by then, but I'm sure he'll get caught up when he can. We haven't heard from Mo in some time, though, and he hasn't played any games. Mo, are you still out there?

I'm still here. Been busy and my xbox is at a friend's house (she got hooked on Karaoke revolution and begged me to borrow it). The earliest I'll be able to play is Sunday. I'm down to catch up if you fellas are up for some doubleheaders next week. I should be very free, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday.
