Financially, they are gushing blood so tactics like this don't surprise me.

NBA Live 07 for the 360 and other versions are some of the worst EA Sports titles ever released, so this is actually GOOD NEWS for the PS3 and potential PS3 owners...

When you're bleeding blood, you'll try to brainwash everyone I guess. Odd because the PS3 would sell out without tactics like that.

At least with the hardcore Sony crowd, yes. However, every time you turn around the number of launch units decreases, so if they keep up the pace, they are assured of selling out the first batch or three.... 8O

It is a shame that a company with Sony's reputation for quality (before all the E3 to now bullsh1t) would resort to such misinformation.

After some initial uncertainty, both NBA 2K7 and NHL 2K7 will be available on November 17th (PS3 launch day) from 2Ksports:

Sony Says tell Customers PS3 CPU is THREE TIMES as powerful as 360

Sony has created a training website for store employees who will be stocking the PS3. They encourage people to relay to customers and other staff members that the PS3 CPU is THREE TIMES more powerful than that in the 360 and 35 times than the PS2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After logging in, Sony marketing spin quotes can be found while employees read, learn & test their PS3 knowledge. Here’s the real gem:

“Welcome to your PS3 Retail Online Training. We trust that you will find the following information valuable and assist you in understanding and explaining PS3 Technology to your customers and staff. … The Cell Processor is essentially as powerful as 3 Xbox 360 CPU’s or 35 PlayStation® 2 CPU’s”

If this article is legitimate, this is the kind of sh1t that completely discredits Sony in my eyes. They have a fantastic product in the PS3 and yet they are scared to death to be truthful in their advertising and let the product stand on it's own merits. It is too bad that many consumers will fall for this sort of misrepresentation. I am trying real hard to get into the whole PS3 thing, but every time I turn around, Sony is pulling some idiotic stunt like this that is just flat out WRONG.
Sounds like panic...

Went to target to pick up Combined Assault and saw a nice new PS3 kiosk there. Of course I had to check it out right quick.

The demo they had in was Motorstorm. That game does nothing for me, but it looks very sharp and crisp that's for sure. The sixaxis was setup to have the motion sensor off so I couldn't test that out.

I don't see what all the fuss about the controller is. I think they made a smart decision going this route and getting rid of the boomerang style controller.

One thing I did notice about the PS3 system itself is that it's fuggin HUGE. Makes the original XBOX look tiny. Shiny too.

Long line in Tokyo for just 80,000 units:

http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/pla ... _video.php

Someone posted the forthcoming Best Buy ad, which promises a minimum of 20 of the $600 units at each store and 6 of the $500 units. Higher-volume stores would presumably get more.

When people are camping out over a week before launch, that kind of bid isn't too surprising.

Some forums have people talking about $1500 minimum and more like $2000 as likely bids.

Sony probably benefits from the shortage somewhat. Obviously it would be better long-term to sell as many as possible to have market share for the console and Blu-Ray markets.

But in the short-term, when the costs to manufacture are the highest, they lose more money per unit now than they will say a year from now, when their yields will be better and component costs will have gone down. Not to mention process improvements on the Cell, RSX and blue laser diodes.

If they can constrict supply without decreasing demand as people get tired trying to find a PS3 and buy something else, it would be to their advantage. Easier said than done of course.

Sony is Brilliant!!! ...purposely having shortages at launch..

I think they should have taken this even further and delayed launch another year so it could be even cheaper to make......and who knows in a year they may actually be ready to launch.

I got to play the PS3 at Target for a while today. Unfortunately, all they had was a demo of NBA 07 to try. Also, they had a fairly huge monitor hooked up, so big that it was difficult to take it all in because your head is literally right in front of it. In this case, bigger was not better.
The controller is basically indistinguishable from the Dual Shock 2 once you get it in your hands, and the PS3 "guide" button was smaller than I thought, given the size of the 360's. The graphics of NBA 07 were technically phenomenal, extremely crisp and clear and a rock solid 60 FPS. Unfortunately, I have never been a fan of the art style of the Sony NBA series, so I expect NBA 2K7 to be more to my liking visually when it's released. While I feel 2K7 has its own gameplay problems, this game is just not a competitor... although it may be better than Live. So despite the nice visuals, the so so gameplay and being stuck with the baseline cam (I always play sideline in hoops games) got me bored pretty quick so I handed it off to one of the little kids watching. I wish they would have had Motorstorm.

They did have Motorstorm, there's just no way of exiting the demo without waiting for it to automatically go to the main menu. I checked the PS3 out at Target by work on Friday. I played NBA 07 first and thought it was nice looking but not as good looking as NBA 2k7. It wasn't very good either. Motorstorm looked very pretty but was extremely boring. The cars were very slow even when using boost. I'd say the visuals were on par with Call of Duty 2. The controller is the same as the Dual Shock with two exceptions, the guide button (which I didn't even notice I just remembered about it after Kaz's post) and the L2 and R2 buttons have been extended a little and turned into triggers like the 360 controller. They weren't nearly as nice as the 360 controller's though. If the 360 wasn't out right now and I saw the PS3 for the first time I'd definitely want one. Since I've had a 360 for almost a year now the PS3 did nothing for me. I'll likely pick one up in a year or two but it didn't blow me away like the 360 has over the past 4 months. Maybe by the time MGS4 or Final Fantasy 13 is ready I'll look at getting one. Though there's rumblings that those two franchises might make their way to the 360 as well. I would have really liked to check out Resistance:Fall of Man. I'm a sucker for shooters and that could have upped my enthusiasm.

Tried it out today as well with basically the same impressions. There were three games on the demo, NBA 07, Motorstorm, and something else. I only got to play Motorstorm but was bored halfway through the first lap. Extremely slow-moving with absolutely no sense of speed. The damage modeling looked pretty bad also. I will say that the environment looked nice and sharp, but it just wasn't any fun. I think there are only like 3 games at launch that aren't also available on the 360 and with Motorstorm being one of those, the console is a pretty tough sell for me. 1up was commenting on their podcast this week that Resistance is also very much like Half-Life 2 and really does nothing new except for a few creative guns... It's sounding like it'll be a while before I pick one of these up.

Sony's backward compatibility for PS3 off to a very shaky start....and then there is that arrogant damn attitude rearing its ugly head...
In response to these issues, Sony's PR department pointed out that it, from the start, expected backwards compatibility to be less than 100%. It was also good enough to point out that some people can put up with playing games that lack sound.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745506p1.html

What happened to "100% backward compatibility" promised from this years E3 to now? And I know of NO ONE who plays video games that have no sound...what a crock.

That's too bad.

Only have a couple of PS2 games left so it would be nice to be able to get rid of my old PS2.

The EE and GS chip is on the PS3 motherboard. Future designs may remove this chip in favor of software emulation and a way to reduce costs.

So BC may get better or worse in the future, depending on how good the SW emulation is.

Hmm, if they delayed the launch to get BC perfect, then what would have been the hue and cry?

Apparently, there is a rumor in the new EGM that Konami is considering porting MGS4 to the 360. That would suck for Sony.

So apparently we've got not nearly enough units to go around, freezing/crashing units, consoles being bought to immediately go on eBay and shitty backwards compatibility. Sound familiar?
