Sad day for WI
On the back of our ballots we had a chance to vote on the marriage amendment. Like some other states, it would place an amendment in the WI Constitution banning gay marriage.
Well, it passed. We have a f***in constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. WTF. I hope that I can get an amendment regulating loud stereos, or maybe fence heights. I can't believe people bought the rhetoric and actually voted yes. This has absolutely no business being in the constitution. Its f***in mind boggling...insane.
Well at least the sanctity of a marriage b/w a man and a woman will be upheld...or at least 50% of it or whatever the divorce rate is.
Kudos to you you cheesedicks...good job on the sanctimonious seperation of church and state. f***in douchebags...I'm moving to Montana and starting my own country

Anything that is discriminatory on a constituation is just un-american. It goes against everything this country stands for. I am glad bush didn't go for a Federal amendment a few years ago.
Still think that prohibition amendment takes some of the luster out of the consitution, even though they reversed it.

What I don't get is this: if you're a religious person who believes that marriage is a religious thing (and therefore you want to preserve the "sanctity of marriage", etc.), then why would you want government defining and potentially interfering with marriage at all? Wouldn't you want the ability for each religion, church, or other group to define marriage the way they see fit, with government only stepping in to arbitrate any disputes that arise with respect to the legal contract that some people decide to associate with marriage?
I don't see it as a discrimination issue, so much as an unnecessary imposition of tradition and custom as law.

We passed it here in VA and I'm proud to have voted for it. Not sure we needed it, but with other states allowing gay marriages, I'm guessing a few others wanted to nail the door shut before someone tried to open it.
For what it's worth, I believe that marriage, as intended by God, was to be between a man and a woman so I voted to preserve that in my state.
I have nothing against gays, but the whole idea of a kid being raised by two moms or two dads, just irks the sh*t out of me.
Win or lose, it wouldn't have bothered me too much, since morals are all but an afterthought now in this country.

WOW!!! This is one issue I hadn't heard much about nationwide.
All I can say is that everyone that voted yes are a bunch of homo phobes and are probably a bunch of closet cocksuckers. That's what it amounts to. Those Christians that are anti-gay are nothing more than Homophobic closet gays.
Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings here but its ludicrous something like this should even be an issue. I am not gay, happily married to my wife for 7 yrs in December and I am not for or against gays. If I guy OR girl chooses to love and marry the same sex then who am I to JUDGE them?
Thou shall not judge........anyone ever read that in the bible??

Aside from the obvious irony here, I think you're way off base. No way there are that many closet cocksuckers. It's a natural tendency for people to want to legislate their beliefs, especially when their opponents are as vitriolic and offensive as, say, you.SEMINOLE wrote:WOW!!! Seriously...Why not give people in a gay relationship the same rights as people in a straight relationship? I have a problem with states doing stuff like this by passing anti-gay bills. They shoudl have the same legal rights as a straight couple and that is where my problem is with this. I could care less about who they are having sex with but I think they should have equal rights in terms of social security, health insurance, etc...

Yeah, the problem is that government has tried to be too helpful and entangled itself with marriage in a lot of ways (taxes, licenses, employer laws, etc.) that it shouldn't have. Two people living together is a custom, a tradition. When you build laws based on customs and traditions, problems like this always arise. The best thing to do would be to get rid of government's involvement with marriage completely. It's not government's business to keep men from marrying each other or to take care of poor moms based on their marital status.Zlax45 wrote:Seriously...Why not give people in a gay relationship the same rights as people in a straight relationship? Any kind of contract between two people that is otherwise lawful should be legal, and there should be no legislation that treats people who enter this kind of contract differently from people who do not.
Great post. I'm not gay but I believe people are born gay, and I also believe too many people in our generally Christian society are too quick to judge. Maybe if we lived more like the people in Lancaster, PA, we'd all be better off.SEMINOLE wrote:WOW!!! This is one issue I hadn't heard much about nationwide.

You may feel that way, but it gives others no right to legislate based on that religious principle. Why should your religious views, or those of others, dictate the lives of others who do not share the same religoious foundation?Badgun wrote:For what it's worth, I believe that marriage, as intended by God, was to be between a man and a woman so I voted to preserve that in my state.
Thanks for sharing. Did you know that statistically, kids raised by same sex couples do not exhibit differences in self-esteem, gender identity, or emotional health?Badgun wrote:I have nothing against gays, but the whole idea of a kid being raised by two moms or two dads, just irks the sh*t out of me.

Irks you more than, say, a guy who feels his 6 year old daughter up while mom stands mute?

Science is now finding that homesexuality might actually be affected in the womb when hormones are introduced by the mother to the fetus. What they are finding is 1st and 2nd born children are less likely to be homosexual than the youngest born children in the family.GTHobbes wrote:Great post. Anywhere here in Colorado we had a marriage amendment and a same-sex rights amendment. The marriage amendment passed and the same-sex rights amendment failed.
I personally hate all the citizen petitions going on in the states. Colorado is getting terrible. We have nutjobs proposing everything to change the constitution. This year we have the legalization of pot, making it easier to petition, and state mandates for minimum wage, and classroom spending. At this point, I don't know why we have a state legislature. It's far too easy to get things on the ballot here in Colorado. It's being abused and it's hurting the state.

goes to show where Americans heads are at.. ooooh.. big & scary to see two people of the same sex holding hands & such.. meanwhile, our President & our "elected officals" continue to run this country right back into the ground... methinks people should stop paying attention to 'reality TV' & pay attention to 'real life'

your beliefs in what God intended marriage to be is all fine and good, but inserting an amendment into a constitution on this issue flies in the face of the principle of separation of church and state, a principle that has always been as american as mom and apple pie. are you proud to be un-american?Badgun wrote:We passed it here in VA and I'm proud to have voted for it. ahh...but you do have something against gays if this irks you. you can't have it both ways. you deny having discriminatory beliefs and then exhibit them in the very same sentence. this is the very embodiment of hypocrisy.I have nothing against gays, but the whole idea of a kid being raised by two moms or two dads, just irks the sh*t out of me.
something else you may want to consider....did you know that an overwhelming majority of homosexuals are born and raised by heterosexual parents?
additionally, many of them started off by drinking milk, so you may want to start thinking about voting against heterosexual marriages and milk drinking.
How can people scream for less government interference on the one hand, but legislate who can get married on the other hand? How can people claim to have strong moral beliefs on the one hand and yet shrug off the fact that Bush's invasion of Iraq has killed 30,000 Iraq citizens??
To me, it is hypocritical to be selective and say that raising minimum wage is "government interference" but banning gay marriage is a not. It is like the people on this board that will go the farthest to defend the most slimy corporate decisions as capitalism at work, yet will scream about greedy athletes making too much money - forgetting the fact that this too is capitalism.
The irony of all this is that there are just as many gay Republicans as there are Democrats - including a senator in a conservative southern state.
I remember back a few years when friends of mine were told by a moral and religious acquaintance that their son with AIDS was going to hell unless he rejected his homosexuality. How comforting, how moral.

Wow. I didn't get through every post yet, but ther are already a couple that I cannot believe.
Someone ends their post with Do not judege, right after beconing judge, jury, and executioner for anyone who voted yes on this. I would like to know how many of you throwing around ignorant insults actually read the wording of the proposed amendment?
What a bunch of sanctimonious jackasses you sound like. I have a meeting to go to, but you can be sure that I will be back to *try* and have a level headed discussion about this (provided this thread hasn't been locked by then).
BTW, it's a sad day for WI because a crook like Doyle won re-election.

Cuz:
Move. Come back home. You know gay marriage never will be banned in New York.
When I got married, the marriage license was a necessity only because the state said we had to have it to get hitched.
As a regularly practicing Catholic, marriage is a sacrament, complete with a full Mass.
Marriage has nothing to do with state or national law, in my eyes, so it's a shame that the government has to stick its putrid nose into the issue.
Take care,
PK

Did God go to the polls in Virginia? Why vote in a secular setting on something that's God's law?Badgun wrote:For what it's worth, I believe that marriage, as intended by God, was to be between a man and a woman so I voted to preserve that in my state.
That's the complete hypocrisy of followers of Christ voting on a gay-marriage ban enforced by a secular government.
Are your local and state politicians superceding the role of your church leaders on this issue?
If you had nothing against gay people, then why would it irk you? Since you are pissed off by same-sex parents, it infers you don't like them or at least have a bias against them.Badgun wrote:I have nothing against gays, but the whole idea of a kid being raised by two moms or two dads, just irks the sh*t out of me.
I don't like gay marriage because the Catholic Church opposes it. Marriage is reserved for a man and woman, as the Church says. But I have no problem with civil unions, and I certainly have no problem with same-sex parents raising a child.
What the f*ck is wrong with two loving parents of the same sex raising a child with the values of love, generosity and charity? What is immoral about those values, regardless of who is instilling them?
Or would you prefer two opposite-sex parents who beat the sh*t out of each other, argue constantly, drink and use drugs in front of their kids and let their kids run wild? That's OK and moral, just because they're not queers?
Am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy?
Take care,
PK

You are calling me a warmonger? Please!! I proudly served my country and I am also proud to say I am a military veteran who opposes this war. I also happen to be a fire fighter that lost 343 brothers that day 5 years ago. Its sad when not even the fire service believes we are in iraq for 9/11 and their weapons of no destruction!!
I will admit what I said above was harsh and wrong. I was at work and in a bad mood. I just believe this our government has no right in some issues and this is one of them. I also feel , and I will put this as nice as I can, that those opposed to it are really just scared of gays. Plain and Simple! I have no more comments on this thread or any other political thread here.
