Correct. I was speaking in terms of restricted free agency. With Malkin and Staal due to become restricted FA's in the same season, it could be more than the Pens can handle under the cap. It remains to be seen, but I'm sure someone will try to sign those kids to a offer sheet. They're just too good to pass on.Leebo33 wrote:Actually, I believe Staal can play 39 games before the 7 year clock towards unrestricted free agency kicks in. By playing in his 10th game the first year of his three year entry-level contract begins. Not that I expect the Pens to stop playing him at midseason if he continues to play well and they remain in the playoff hunt.Sully wrote:Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, it might stamp his ticket out of town come 2009...when Staal and Malkin are both due to become Free Agents.

In light of Ed Belfour's past difficulties in dealing with splitting time with another goalie, I find this article kinda funny;

Malkin is doing something Crosby couldn't last year -- putting the NHL in the mainstream, at least a little bit.
As I watched the news ticker stream by during "Imus in the Morning" this morning on MSNBC, a note about Malkin's goal-scoring milestone appeared between a note on the Kerry flap and a note about General Motors!

The Oilers' defense is horrid right now, and it has very little to do with the loss of Pronger and Spacek. It has EVERYTHING to do with Roloson, but in a different way than you might think.
Last year, the Oilers' goaltending was shaky from the start, with Conklin and Markkanen between the pipes. So every player on that roster knew they had to play solid defense in their end to protect the porous goaltending.
This year, Roli has been so strong other than the Anaheim game that the Oilers are getting lazy and sloppy on D, figuring Roli will bail them out. Nashville's first goal last night was a classic example. That dude was left alone in front of the crease to deflect Timonen's shot from the point, with not an Oiler within 5 feet of him.
Lupul is a disappointment so far. Not only is he not scoring at a good clip, but he's borderline brutal in his end. A one-way player, all the way. Not good. Hopefully MacT will light him up and make him realize he has to play both ways.
Take care,
PK

Feanor wrote:I saw on ESPNews yesterday that Tim Connolly is going to miss the rest of the season, and his whole career must be in jepoardy now. It would serve the NHL right if a young superstar like Sidney Crosby gets shouldered/elbowed in the head this year and it ends his career.
Huh? Wishing Crosby to get hurt? That's class. The hit that put Connolly on the DL during the playoffs last year looked pretty clean to me.
I think the NHL needs to make mouthguards made by the Patriots' team dentist mandatory. Apparently this dentist has some special kind of mouthguard that prevents concussions, and the Pats had zero concussions between 2000-03, so the damn things must work.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2314899
The NHL also needs to eliminate or reduce the thickness of the plastic on shoulder pads, as it did this season with elbow pads. When I was a kid and even when I was playing rec hockey in the mid-90s, elbow pads had no plastic. Now they look like Barry Bonds' f*cking batting body armor.
I saw on "Satellite Hotstove" on "Hockey Night in Canada" earlier this season that the NHL is looking into modifying shoulder pads to make them "softer."
Sadly, Connolly is done -- for good. There's no way he'll come back. He'll be like Primeau and Brett Lindros, literally knocked out of the game.
It's a bummer for me, for two reasons. One, the kid really blossomed last year, finally fulfilling his immense talent. Two, he grew up in the Syracuse suburbs, and his parents and family still live there.
Take care,
PK

Geez.
I didn't wish Crosby would get hurt - I said that it would serve the NHL right if one of their cash cows got a terrible injury because of their ridiculous policy of allowing hits to the head to remain legal. I didn't say it would serve Crosby right. It will take something terrible like that to make them finally pull their heads out of their asses.
The NHL needs brilliant, creative players like Pat LaFontaine and Sidney Crosby flying around the ice a lot more than it needs people getting rock hard shoulder pads or elbows rammed into their temples. And I mention LaFontaine (who was one of my favourite players and has been retired for eight years) because of this nice story:

I agree totally about the mouthguards. The fact that good mouthguards help prevent concussions has been well known in rugby and rugby league for many years, and I'm still amazed when I see there are NHL players who don't wear them.pk500 wrote:I think the NHL needs to make mouthguards made by the Patriots' team dentist mandatory. Now among the fine group of youngsters in today's NHL, my favourite is still A. Ovechkin. I watched him during the rare CAD tour that WAS just had and this guy can do everything he's asked for. He plays "D", he hits, he fights and he can score. WAS can definitely build their future on this guy. He's entertaining and kind off the ice too, and his english has improved miles. Not too bad for his sophomore year.
E. Malkin is a huge guy, he's what? 6.4, 6.5? He doesn't have Crosby's speed but he makes it up with his creativity and vision on the ice. Tough guy to knock off too.

A random selection of great quotes from Ovechkin:
>>>>>
Reporter: So who do you like to watch on the highlights?
Ovechkin: "Me"
"When I wake up now, I don't have breakfast. I try to make something, but it's no good. I just go to Starbucks and eat chocolate."
"Here you see 65 (mph) and you can go 80. In Russia, you see 65 and you can go 100 or whatever you want. Just give the police some money."
"I saw the rebound and when the puck came to me, I said, 'Oh my God, puck.' I must shoot."
"They are fans, and they want my signature. They live in Washington, and they are fans of our team. I think if I signed 10 signatures and there were 20 more fans waiting and I didn't sign for them also, they would want to know why, and I would feel bad. If you have time, why not sign them all?"
<<<<<
I love this kid. Young players like Ovechkin, Crosby, Staal, Phaneuf, Hemsky and Malkin have the NHL ready for a brighter future.
Take care,
PK

I love this idea to ban composite sticks and make wooden sticks mandatory:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ ... 1102123933
I HATE composite sticks. They're $150-200 each and break too easily. I remember when Jackdog and I were on the phone early last season and said to each other, "Can you remember seeing this many sticks explode this early in the season?"
I use a wooden stick for fiscal reasons. But I also love the feel of wood. There's nothing like the feel of good wood -- just ask our wives and significant others.
Take care,
PK

My SO isn't using mine to propel a small rubber cylinder at speeds of up to 90mph while surrounded by 11 blokes...at least not while we are both awake, at any rate. What goes on in her dreams is anyone's guess..pk500 wrote:

I must admit that the phrase 'he shoots, he scores !' has occasionally been utilised, however....
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."

Luongo was way out of the net and he took a chance. It was one of those chances you take where if it goes in, it's a beauty, but if it doesn't, you ask yourself, what the hell did I do? It was a beauty.Feanor wrote:I checked it out on NHL.com and boy did he rip that one.Dave wrote:Anyone see Brian Rolston's slapper on a penalty shot? Mick McGeough can f*ck me. He stole the game from the Oil last night.
First, the fat f*ck allows Dallas' first goal when dough boy Lindros clearly interfered with Roli, knocking his stick out of his hand in the crease.
Then Dick Mick disallowed Hemsky's tying goal with four seconds left, ruling a hand pass from Horcoff on the faceoff.
I never thought McGeough was a good ref when I covered the AHL 16 years ago, and my opinion hasn't changed one bit. He's a f*cking drama queen who has to insert himself unnecessarily into every game he officiates.
D*uchebag.
That said, the Oil is incredibly sloppy in their end right now, and their breakouts are horrible. Really shoddy.
Still, McGeough can suck my 2-inch shaft.
Take care,
PK

Ohh, I always assumed his name was spelt this way.

I hate wanker refs like him who think they're bigger than the game, and make some of their calls based on what players they like & dislike. Marc Joanette is another one:

I hate wanker refs like him who think they're bigger than the game, and make some of their calls based on what players they like & dislike. Marc Joanette is another one:
Peter Forsberg says the reason he hopped into his Audi A8 and sped off into the cold night Thursday, minutes after the Flyers lost by 5-2 to Tampa Bay, was that he was afraid of saying something he'd regret.
"I didn't talk because I knew I would get fined," Forsberg said yesterday.
Forsberg's angst began when referee Marc Joannette watched Nolan Pratt trip him from behind and made no call. When Forsberg angrily swung his elbow, striking the defender, he was whistled for a high stick.
"I usually don't criticize the officials," Forsberg said. "I know they try to do their best. It's tough when you are trying to do your best and that happens. But who cares? We lost the game.
"I don't get along with that official," Forsberg conceded.
When Forsberg began to argue vociferously, he picked up an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty and a misconduct, resulting in his ejection.
It was a bush league call and after the game he admitted his mistake. Bad timing for the Oilers but like you said PK, the D has to also play smarter and not rely too much on Rolie.
Speaking of D's, Canucks are pretty thin in that department, as S. Salo injured his knee and along with W. Mitchell out, M. Ohlund is the only capable veteran that can compete with any 1st line team. Important 2 pointers in hand for the Nucks & Avs as the Wild keep winning.
What's wrong with the other Alberta team?

Many things, and I'm relishing every one of them.10spro wrote:What's wrong with the other Alberta team?
1. Sutter has not changed his system to adapt to the "new NHL," and Playfair is a Sutter puppet. The Flames are playing the same tight-checking, physical, non-skating game that got them to the Finals in 2003-04. That was the "old NHL."
2. Tanguay is being suffocated by the defensive system in Calgary. Eric Duhatschek made a great point in a column this week: Look at all the players who have blossomed offensively since they left Calgary -- Marc Savard, Chris Drury, Craig Conroy, Steven Reinprecht, etc. Can you imagine how many points Iginla could have if he played for a team that let it's skill players use their skill? He'd be an annual 100-point player, no question, and a perpetual Hart candidate.
3. Kiprusoff hasn't been as deluxe as last season between the pipes.
F*ck Calgary. Let 'em burn, no pun intended.

And Mick the Dick admitted today that he made a mistake. A lot of f*cking good that does today, with the Oil losing at least a point, probably two if you count the BLATANT goalie interference on Roli that never was called against Pillsbury Lindros in the first period.
MacT nailed it after the game: He called it a "retarded call" and said McGeough should be suspended. That was f*cking amateur hour by drama queen Mick.
