Actually, Microsoft did get reamed for having major shortages at the time of their release.

I am with PK, if the PS3 is reliable, that will go a long way toward victory. If it is quiet, isn't hot enough to fry eggs and Sony follows through on their online strategy, then we will have a winner.

MS had shortages. Sony will have shortages. MS had/has pretty serious reliability problems.

Sony is now on the clock ...

Take care,
PK
I use to work for Sony in Florida and one thing we learned during orientation which was right around the time of the PS2 launch was this. If you are going to buy any Sony product try and buy the first run. Sony tends to only use the best components from the initial batch of parts available to assemble their electronic devices.

That's not to say the machine will not have problems like the PS2 DVD drives which was not the fault of quality issues but rather a design flaw which was corrected with the Slim PS2.

If the PS3 does have it's problems it will most likely be from design problems rather than quality control. Media sites who have previewed working PS3's have commented how whisper quiet they are when running and do not run hot at all.

The PS3 demo units are starting to show up--the Target near my office had it setup.

Unfortunately, the system was frozen on the menu screen when I was there...uh oh.

A few weeks back I mentioned that Sony needed a blog site like major nelson, seems like they understand that now.

Of course in typical Sony fashion, instead of being upfront about it and laying their cards on the table (ala nelson) they do things the Sony way. someone asked the other day why some people jump on Sony so much, for me it is because of this s***.

More info from Phil Harrison on Sony downloadable games. Good news in that unlike Xbox Live Arcade, download sizes are not limited to 50MB since every unit has a hard drive.

Great quote.. If you've resorted to taking shots at your competition in every news / press release you're scared shitless. I'd never though I would see the day when Microsoft came off looking like the classy party in the console wars.
"My strategy was to encourage developers to push the machine technically, creatively, artistically - to innovate in lots of different ways. But don't be restricted by ghettoising games into a particular genre, or a particular display mechanic, because what we've seen on other systems tend to be retro 2D games," he continued as he issued that slight jab to Xbox Live Arcade, "and we're pushing the 3D capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Plus, the fact that every PS3 has a hard disc drive means that we're not restricted by the size of the download, and that has a huge impact on the kind of game design that you can do."

They love the word "ghetto," for some reason. If you remember, they said the PSP is taking handheld gaming out out of the handheld ghetto.

You're kidding yourself if you think EA or any other company who paid for exclusive licensing is going to let Sony of Microsoft allow transfer of roster files outside of said game.

An before someone says what can EA do to prevent Sony from allowing this, how about not make their sports games avaialble. Seemed like an excellent startegy with the Dreamcast and also in forcing MS to allow EA to run thier own auth. servers with the Xbox Live

Excluding games from platforms is not a good strategy for selling games. If you limit the number of buyers your sales will decline.

Any info on when online retailers (EB, Target, Best Buy, etc.) are going to begin taking online orders? I know they will go in minutes but, hell, I'll take a shot at ordering one just to make a killing on EBAY...or keep it :) I actually got a launch PS2 at the last minute on Buy.com.

Last night, around 11 pm or so, BestBuy.com had a link for preorders for the PS3...alone...no bundles. I saw it over at the IGN forums a little before midnight. A bunch of people jumped in and bought preorders...including myself. It was a legit link. I got a confirmation email from Best Buy with order status, tracking info, etc.

A number of people called Best Buy customer service to try and confirm things (because it seemed to good to be true) and so far it looks legit. Many of the customer service reps seemed puzzled at the event, claiming that they were told online preorders were not going to happen, but after checking into it claimed the link was legit and it looked like the orders are for real. Now, if it was a mistake of some sorts I'm sure Best Buy will cancel the orders and claim it was an error, etc. If this ends up being the case I'll get over it. I was just going to sell it on Ebay anyway. I don't see any need for a PS3 until the spring.

If it is legit my guess is that the head honchos at Best Buy.com kept it under wraps for obvious reasons. Anyone else see/hear about this?

Another claim from a Best Buy Rep.
He said the preorder was real and the orders will be honored. He said the link was emailed to customers last night and that's how they intended to do it. But I did point blank ask him "Is this legitimate and will I get my system shipped on the 17th?". His exact words were "Yes sir, it was and your system is set to ship on the 17th".

Lots of stories are flying around about this whole incident. You hear anything from "it was a mistake being put up" to "it was legit and all orders are being honored". Whatever happens happens. I'll get over it if it get canceled. Bottom line, it WAS a legit BestBuy.com page. Whether it was put up too early is another issue. I'm sure Best Buy.com will release a statement tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted if I get any emails. I DID get an order confirmation email after making the order and in my acct. it is still active.

Someone posted a supposed email saying it was a mistake but nobody else has verified it.

Only oddity is they were taking orders for like 3 hours apparently and they didn't have any restrictions on how many you could order so some people supposedly ordered several.

You wouldn't expect online preorders to last 3 hours. The available quantities would be all snatched up in minutes.

Here's a Destructoid post about the optional motion-based controls available for Virtua Tennis 3. This doesn't look very intuitive to me.

That article is just ONE of the responses given by customer service reps at Best Buy. For every one like th above article there is one that claims the sales were legit. For the most part they are all clueless. I'm sure there will be an official response today from Best Buy.

Sony Says tell Customers PS3 CPU is THREE TIMES as powerful as 360

Sony has created a training website for store employees who will be stocking the PS3. They encourage people to relay to customers and other staff members that the PS3 CPU is THREE TIMES more powerful than that in the 360 and 35 times than the PS2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After logging in, Sony marketing spin quotes can be found while employees read, learn & test their PS3 knowledge. Here’s the real gem:

“Welcome to your PS3 Retail Online Training. We trust that you will find the following information valuable and assist you in understanding and explaining PS3 Technology to your customers and staff. … The Cell Processor is essentially as powerful as 3 Xbox 360 CPU’s or 35 PlayStation® 2 CPU’s”

If this article is legitimate, this is the kind of sh1t that completely discredits Sony in my eyes. They have a fantastic product in the PS3 and yet they are scared to death to be truthful in their advertising and let the product stand on it's own merits. It is too bad that many consumers will fall for this sort of misrepresentation. I am trying real hard to get into the whole PS3 thing, but every time I turn around, Sony is pulling some idiotic stunt like this that is just flat out WRONG.
