Agreed. It really is pretty good. He finally got to do his "own" music as opposed to the radio friendly pop crap that the record execs were pushing on him. I believe this is his first album on his second record contract...thus, he's allowed to do what HE wants...not the record company.

Been listening to a load of new stuff (new Lambchop CD is well worth a listen), but the one I've gone back to a few time is Grant Lee Philips new CD "nineteeneighties".

As the title suggests, he's taken 12 fairly 'alternative' 1980's songs (Joy Division, REM, The Cure, The Smiths' and re-done them in his sort of alt-country style - and the results are a lot better than my description might have you believe

I have been listening to the new Killers CD. Very good stuff.

I enjoyed Hot Fuss but this one is better IMHO.

2006 hasn't been the best year for music, but...........The best album I've heard so far: Menomena - Friend and Foe. It isn't out until 2007, but it's great.

So anyways,

MENOMENA - FRIEND AND FOE .... I've been listening to it over and over. When I listen to other music (no matter how good it is) I find myself wanting to go back to this.

Yes! Discovered him about six weeks ago on NPR's excellent "All Songs Considered" podcast. I "obtained" "Post-War" immediately, and it's excellent.

Definitely a case of "less is more" in terms of musical style, vocal delivery, etc.

Another recommendation: Robert Randolph & The Family Band's new release, "Colorblind." Ranks right up there with Neko Case's "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" as my favorite record of 2006.

Awesome. You absolutely need to get his "Transistor Radio" album. It is my favorite of the three albums I have from him by far.

There's something to be said about great stories within each song, mated by music propelled by awesome power chords and riffs on "Boys and Girls." It's the kind of rock that I grew up on, and I'm glad to see it revived by The Hold Steady.

Brando, I must have listened to "Chips Ahoy" five or six times tonight. What a funky-ass story of a song, with some bitchin' power chords. I love that song, and it's one of a bushel of gems on this record. Have you seen the video for "Chips Ahoy?" CLASSIC.

Couldn't disagree more. I'm late to The Killers' party, as I never heard "Hot Fuss" and heard "Sam's Town" for the first time tonight.

I sure hope "Hot Fuss" is better than "Sam's Town," which flat-out sucks.

This band is a joke wrapped into a cliche on this album, trying to be U2, Springsteen and Queen combined with its add-a-chord, make-an-arena-anthem sound. Plus the lead singer's falsetto is a joke, and lyrics like "burning up a highway, on the back of a hurricane" are beyond lame.

All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't pay for this album. It's pure trash. If this is cutting-edge, exciting rock, then I fear for the genre.

The Hold Steady's new album absolutely DESTROYS "Sam's Town" among recent American rock releases.

Amusing video, PK, thanks for the link. What's funny is how little their image is used in promos since they all look old and very un-Laguna Beach. There's no picture of them on the CD at all.

I am convinced this is my record of the year, surprising considering how much I love Neko Case's Fox Confessor. I really liked the last Hold Steady disc, Separation Sunday, but this one is even better and more consistent.

Haven't picked up The Killers new one. I thought Hot Fuss was a great EP that was stretched out too much. When they are on (like "Mr. Brightside") they are a really fun band and make the kind of music I love to drive to.

I agree with Brando about the Killers. There are a handful of songs on Hot Fuss that I listen to, but the rest I just skip and a couple I would consider horrible.

I "obtained" "Hot Fuss" after listening to "Sam's Town" and hating it, since I've read that both records are very different.

That's the truth, as "Hot Fuss" was definitely influenced more by 80s new wave and synth bands like The Cure, New Order and Duran Duran than "Sam's Town." The Killers try to go anthemic and heartland with "Sam's Town," and it's a cliched mess, in my opinion.

I didn't think much of "Hot Fuss," either, as it seemed to be a Duran Duran cover album with a few catchy ditties. But "Hot Fuss" and "Sam's Town" definitely are different, the common denominator between both for me that I think they're both weak records.

Your mileage may vary!

Alternative, alt-country, singer-songwriter. A voice that can melt. Some of her lyrics seem nonsensical and dopey, but then some are very good. The music is consistently good, though.

Leebo, my personal favorite song on her Fox Confessor Brings the Flood album is "That Teenage Feeling." Try listening to that -- if you like it, you'll probably like the rest. And if you like her voice, try The New Pornographers if you haven't already. She's just one member and they are a rock/pop band, but she sings some great numbers with them.

Ah, yes: Neko is a firecrotch, er, a redhead. Sultry.

I still put Shawn Colvin atop my list of favorite female voices because she has a certain girlish-ness, a certain softness, that Neko lacks. But as far as pure pipes, Neko is hard to beat. My top three working female voices, in order, are Shawn Colvin, Jane Monheit (jazz singer) and Neko Case.

Speaking of redheads, you know who my favorite Oiler, Jarret Stoll (my avatar) supposedly is banging? Rachel Hunter, the ex-Mrs. Rod Stewart. Well done, Stollie!

Glad to see some love for the Hold Steady in here. Needless to say I'm excited as hell to be checking them out live tomorrow night. And if you like the discs, the live show will f***in blow you away. Craig Finn is so manic on stage that you wonder how he will make it through the show, but he does and he does it with style. It's amazing to see a group of guys having as much fun on stage as these guys do.

As far as the new record goes, I had very high hopes for "Boys And Girls In America" and they exceeded them. The only track that I can do without is "Chillout Tent" and that is more the guest female vocals during the chorus than anything. It seems that THS made a concerted effort to have a little more melody on this record and it works. As much as I loved "Separation Sunday" and "The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me", the new album has surpassed them.

Here is a link to their tour schedule and by all means, if you have an opportunity, go see them. You won't regret one second of it.

Ha! I love "Chillout Tent" because it's a great story, one that I've witnessed at festival shows before. So it hits home. Plus I like the music of the tune.

Damn, I need to check out the Buffalo show Dec. 13. It's only two hours, 15 minutes away -- an easy drive if it isn't snowing. Then again, hoping it won't snow along the Great Lakes in upstate N.Y. in December is like hoping it won't be hot during midday in the desert.
