Yeah that is unbiased, it is coming from Phil Harrison and conviently he doesn't point out which games. I'm sure all the first party titles will be 1080p and fill up the discs, they have to justify it.

If you want the conesoles to be "equal" in abililty, then I would have to agree with Sony on this one. Of course, I doubt we will ever see games on HD-DVD for the xbox.

The problem is the "comparison". They deliberately used a Core unit for the comparison when the Premium is the more logical and fair choice for comparison.....

Did anyone ever really think they would meet their shipment numbers?

From Bloomberg.com, and this was faster than even I expected:
Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., which slashed its profit forecast yesterday, said it may not reach this year's shipment target for the PlayStation 3 game console because of a parts shortage in the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive.

Sony plans to ship two million PlayStation 3 players this year to the U.S. and Japan, and six million worldwide by March. The Tokyo-based company said yesterday annual profit would fall 35 percent to its lowest in five years on price cuts of the console in Japan and a recall of 9.6 million computer batteries.

"The honest answer is it's more of a target'' for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. "Clearly we've had production issues.''

From IGN:

"On a down note, SCE informed us that DVD upscaling was not part of the PS3 multimedia feature set. The Xbox 360 upscales DVDs, so it’s surprising to see SCE go without the feature."

I could care less about upscaling, downscaling, in-betweenscaling, but this might be a big deal to some A/V nuts.

Here is the mentioned launch list, I've bolded stuff that you can't get on a 360 either before launch of the PS3 or at the same time which would be a total of 6 titles, that is if you count ridge Racer and Full auto 2 as something anyone would buy.

I just checked out Gamestop's site and some of the games are not showing up as launch. I'm confused.

There is a reason for that. I'll just use a joystiq quote, but you can find this on a few other sites as well.

Sony has revealed PlayStation 3's launch window catalogue, implying that the designated titles will be gradually released during the holiday season. In other words, not all 21 games will be available on November 17.

Don't shoot the messenger

Gamestop's site may need to be updated. Also, I doubt every game will make it to launch as a couple of the 360 launch games that were first announced didn't quite make it.

Launch titles are titles that are released within the first 3 months after the console is. Everyone hears launch title and assumes it means it will be released on the same day as the console.

That is quite an impressive launch. However, there are only a few games on there you can't play on the 360. I'm not knocking the PS3, but if I had a 360, why would I want to purchase the PS3 at launch.

Okay...thanks for explaining it to me. With that said, either Gamestop is way off or that "launch window" is pretty big. As an example, F.E.A.R. is showing a 2/6/07 shipping date.

Earlier in the year I was dreading this fall because I'm weak and usually end up breaking down and buying systems at launch even when I plan to hold off. But I can honestly say there is nothing in that list that makes me want to pick up a PS3 anytime soon. The few titles that do interest me are coming out on 360 as well. Maybe they'll get me in the spring with a new batch of releases and tax return money sitting in my savings account.

I doubt FEAR will be Feb, isn't it schedule on the 360 for Nov.? I would think this would not take that long to port.

That's industry standard. I've read that many places before surrounding the PSP and 360 launches.

That's also the standard by which the Wii is adhering. Not every game on the Wii launch list will be available Nov. 17.

So I think it's become an industry standard. There's a launch "window" of three months or so.
