supposedly he is going back to football. is he really that good of a qb? espn says he´d be the #3 ranked qb in the draft this year. houston has his right until the draft.

he last played qb in 2000.

I didn´t think he was that good in college, but neither was Tom Brady. Those Mighican qb´s are sneaky good...except for Elvis Grbac. Wouldn´t surprise me if John Navarre turns out to be an NFL starter before some of these other guys.

As for Henson, what are the Texans going to do with him? They already have a franchise qb in Carr and a very adequate backup in Dave Ragone so where does that leave Henson? I don´t think he would commit to football unless someone told him he could play.

There are lots of rumors that the Steelers want to trade for his rights.

The thing is - the Texans want a #2 pick - which is pretty damn high. Of course - if the Steelers want him bad enough - that´s really not that high of a price to pay for a guy who could be your starting QB for 10+ years....

Henson was considered a potential rival to Michael Vick for the number one pick had he gone straight from Michigan. The consensus thinking at the time was that Brady was a good college quarterback, but that Henson was the far superior pro prospect. Having been out of the game for several years has dropped his value some, but not much. He would definitely be the third quarterback off the board, and would probably go in the top ten if Houston doesn´t get him signed.

That said, I wasn´t overwhelmed by him at Michigan, either, but he would be a great pickup for teams in the lower part of the first round who need a stud QB and are not in position to acquire one (Miami, Dallas, Kansas City and Green Bay all come to mind-the latter two would groom Henson for a few years).
Buffalo is another team that could use a QB to groom if Bledsoe´s swoon is permanent.

But the Bills were burned by their last "groomed" QB from Michigan -- Todd Collins. He sucked.
Take care,

The Texans drafted him never intending to sign him. It was a 6th or 7th round pick, so it wasn´t a big loss (how many late rounders make it anyways?). The pick was always meant as a flip for a future draft pick. A small price to pay for a potentially larger payoff. But didn´t the Yankees get hit with an injury (Aaron Boone)? Henson is stinking it up in the minors, but may get a chance based on that.

I´m guessing the Texans get at least a 3rd rounder for him, because the pool of talent at QB drops off significantly after Manning and Ben what-his-name from Miami Ohio. That was a great move by Houston to draft him in the 6th round last year.

Henson didn´t light the world on fire, but he has a cannon for an arm and pretty good accuracy from what I remember. If you´re willing to sit on him for a year, he could probably be ready to start in 2005. He´d still be young enough to get a good five seasons out of him.

The Texans aren´t going to get anything for him because it would be one of the stupidest all time moves for Henson to sign a contract. If he re-enters the draft, he is likely going to be a top ten pick with a commesurate signning bonus (he will also likely go to a decent team, as the worst team in the league posted 4 wins this year, and Manning and B-Rob will have eliminated two of the dogs already). If he signs with Houston now, he´s a sixth round pick, and no matter how much compensation he gets, it won´t be the same.
It was a good thought Charlie Casserly, but there´s no way it will work out.

I´m not sure what is going to happen, but on my way to a Super Bowl party yesterday Chris Mortensen on ESPN radio was applauding the Texans´ move and said someone would definitely trade for him before the draft. He will work out something with the Yankees to be released from his contract and he will begin workouts for teams in mid-February.

Mort was under the impression that there are creative ways to get Henson money with voidables and such and that he would have the added benefit of choosing the team he would sign with.

I would be shocked if it happens. For starters, he´s not going to get a chance to pick where he goes- he´ll get a chance to select among the group of teams willing to trade for him (probably only 3-4 at most), and even then, if one team makes the best offer, that´s where Houston would send him. Besides, if he just takes his chances in the draft, he is probably going to end up in a good situation. Look at how the draft is likely to go- Manning goes to San Diego, Rothlisberger goes to either Oakland or Arizona. After that, you are looking at teams that have recently selected quarterbacks up until you hit Cleveland or Pittsburgh, then Buffalo, then San Francisco. It´s not like he would get stuck going to an undesireable location from a team competitiveness standpoint.
It sounded like Henson would decide where he wanted to play and agree to terms and then the trade would be made not vice versa. Houston really can´t just deal him to a team making the best offer unless Henson wants to play there and has an agreement because he could sit out another few months and go to the draft. Mort said Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Kansas City, Green Bay, and Miami are all interested. Mort said Henson´s contract would be "very lucrative."

I can't wait till the Dolphins get Boston...a stud WR to go along with Chambers will be nice...even if they don't have anyone to throw them the damn ball. Just hope he balls up...
Randy McMichael had the best quote when hearing about the proposed trade:
"That would be cool, I can work out with him."
